  1. Done 280 miles today visiting mum and mum in law, pegging down gardens, making sure they have water and food and torches etc all the time wondering if it was down graded or not. After reading back 2 pages I guess it's back on? Think I'll do early to bed and see what time it wakes me. I can get by on very little sleep if needed
  2. Hubby just said anyone who is expecting a courier to deliver their parcel on Monday in Croydon and surrounding area can forget it.
  3. Wish I could, unfortunately she is in a wheelchair since having a stroke and I live in a home with 2 staircases and carrying her between rooms and up and down stairs is beyond us these days. She elected to have her home adapted rather than move into a care home or move back to London and due to work, moving to her isn't an option. She had the stroke during the snow event in November '10. She didn't notice the temperature dropping so she got hypothermia, then a blood clot=stroke. She has a great bunch of carers who visit, and good neighbours. Mum loves wet wild windy weather and will probably be up all night, wheelchair by the windows watching the sea. She does the same with snow.
  4. That purple blob is right on top of my old mum who lives on the beach which is 3 miles to the right of Dungeness nuclear power station! I've cancelled my 200 mile round trip to her on Monday, but she may need rescuing by the neighbours if anything happens.
  5. Driving on the M20 Monday morning 7.30am to collect mum from literally on the beach front home at Greatstone, back up to Ashford hospital then drop her back home, then back on the M20 to London doesn't seem like a good idea. I think I'll cancel her minor operation on Monday. That motorway is full of high sided left hand drive lorries at the best of times, don't fancy it with wind and rain too.Must make sure the carers have a plan if they can't get to her. Please check on your elderly neighbours if there's a black out etc
  6. I hope it doesn't happen next Monday. I've got to drive from London to Greatstone, collect old mum, drive back to Ashford hospital then take her home, then drive back to London. Don't want to be doing it in wind and/or heavy rain.
  7. Daily Mail only going for 50 mph winds. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2470069/UK-weather-Britain-battered-50mph-winds-flood-warnings-issued.html And it does have some nice autumn pictures. Mail loses to Express on weather drama this time.
  8. 7.0c And it will rain on the 12th nov, especially in the evening. Its my birthday and it feels like it rains on it every year!
  9. Dark and heavy rain again. This mirage is very persistent today, but alas, no thunder and lightening...........yet!
  10. Switches between tipping down and plain old rain here. Netweather forecast says I don't have any rain today so maybe it's a mirage!
  11. The heading was the coldest winter on record not what if we had 62/63 again. Back then homes all had an open fire so something could be burned to keep warm, but that's not the case now. Families lived nearby each other, often several generations in one home as parents were put in oap homes so fuel and food was shared. Canada still has deaths from winter every year around 5000 as an average which is a lot lower than what we have each year. And because they get cold winters every year the whole country is capable of running normally because it happens every year. In the UK providing rural dwellings have a good store cupboard the they would cope better than city dwellers as many have back up generators, wood burners, etc Town dwellers are a different matter, flats are lucky if you have somewhere to put a broom never mind a food store, transport would grind to a halt due to lack of fuel, hospitals close as staff won't be able to get in etc etc. Hypothermia can start at 12c for someone of poor health and older, that will lead to a stroke and as ambulances can't get through in deep snow, then death. A lengthy spell at 8c can cause it in younger people. Hypothermia is a silent killer because you don't notice it happening. It is often younger people who didn't experience 62/63 that seem to wish for harsh weather but often without thinking of the consequences for others. Few adults who did experience 62/63 would wish to go through it again given a choice.
  12. If it was the coldest winter in history it would lead to a population cull of the elderly, very young, sick, and anyone who has an average income as they wouldn't be able to afford the heating bills. National grid would collapse and we'd probably run out of gas even if you could afford to pay for it. So no thanks, don't want to make history and end up dead!
  13. Glad it's been dry this morning, hubby replaced the pane of glass I broke whilst trying to put up a curtain pole by myself. Something he has now told me in no uncertain terms asked me nicely not to do again with out him. Garlic planted, and last of the autumn raspberries picked. Shed tidy up next.
  14. Don't think my husband is going to want to be up a ladder replacing a cracked pane of glass Saturday morning. Shame I didn't crack it last week! I know it's a long way off but is the following Saturday likely to be at least dry?
  15. If my son is anything to go by, starts to improve very slowly from 21. He's 33 still waiting for it to end! well, he's not that bad really now but took moving in with his GF for it to stop.
  16. i got some sun now JP, You could have sent it to Sydenham or Bromley for Jan. My fingers are so cold from being outside doing the windows with hubby all day. Well, he did most of it, but I did offer cups of tea and helpful advice If it could be dry and sunny in Bookham tomorrow I'd be grateful. Day at mum in laws prep for winter as she calls it. Which is clear the gutters and tidy the garden up and put stuff away. Unless it's pouring with rain, she'll have us out there doing it.
  17. Thank you so much for that JP, just what I wanted to hear, as by the end of Saturday we should have finished sanding and painting the last window. Didn't realise we had so many but at least it's nearly done. Must find something nicer to do with a week off work next year.
  18. Since the site was update the forecast for my area seems odd. There is most definitely not a feel like temp of 26c outside! Anyone else noticed this?
  19. Nothing quite like the taste of the first one is there? I've had 11 kilos so far off my 12 plants, and, whilst not a record for me it's up in near the top the time of year. Black Russian really disappointing, don't like the texture, taste nothing special and a small crop, so won't be bothering with those again. Crystal Lemon cucumbers are very tasty and can be useful for fussy kids, just give it a different name and tell them they've never had one before. I expected my BNS crop to be the best ever given the hot sunny weather but out of 3 plants I've got 1 had several last year and, well, we all know what sort of a summer that was. Must have 20+ female flowers now, shame it's too late, well unless the next 8 weeks are really mild.
  20. The noise of the rain has had me awake for ages, well not the rain exactly, the noise of it falling onto something metal in next doors garden. I'm going to be fit for nothing tomorrow.
  21. That's just what I came in here to find out. Thank you. Sitting here with my primark fleecy bed socks on as my feet were cold, cardi has been replaced with a fleecy top, and the light went on in my living room at 7.40 as I couldn't see the keyboard it was so dark :o( I'll practice hibernation till it warms up again.
  22. I may have to put a cardi on! I've got goose bumps wearing a t-shirt and light weight shirt on top Can we have warm balmy evenings back please.
