  1. Hey everyone. I'm off skiing to Les Arcs in France on the 19th January. The conditions arn't bad, but a bit more snow would be good. I've got my eye on the Sunday/Monday potential snow event. We're getting down to the 48 hour more definitive time frame, so which high resolution model is most accurate and best to follow for the region of the world ? Arpege, Hirlam etc ?. I keep up to date with the forecast on snow-forecast.com, j2ski etc - but they can all vary quite a bit from one another (I guess some rely on GFS, others ECM etc). I enjoy looking at the high res models myself more than anything though.
  2. Just had a very brief bit of heavy rain. Ground already dry again though, and all that water evaporating has made it very humid and muggy. Feeling very warm, practically tropical out there due to the rain. Still no storms mind you.
  3. Still hoping for a good storm here. Don't think i've seen a daytime storm here this year, maybe longer. They either seem to miss me, or arrive at 3am when i'm asleep
  4. Would love to see some storms here, not looking too likely though.
  5. Well here in south Leicestershire near Lutterworth i've seen snow shower after shower both in north Leicester and south of here for the entire day. I'm in a narrow 20 mile wide band north to south which has had basically nothing all day, not even a dusting. This has happened pretty much every easterly this winter and others, so there is something about the topography of this area I think. It basically always does this with an easterly. I'm not really bothered this time, I am looking forward to summer now I just think it is an interesting phenomenon and i'd like to learn the actual reason one day. Hope those who were wanting snow today got some edit: Well obviously i'm a big fat liar because there is a dusting out there now thin enough to see the surface below it, mind. Still the point stands, actual heavy precip seldom hits this area from an easterly.
  6. I don't think anyone is aware of it. Only just learnt myself. Looks potentially nasty for a select few. Accumulations will not last or settle easy, but looks heavy during rush hour. 7am tomorrow.
  7. Personally for me, while I love the snow, I get fed up of the cold pretty quickly. De-icing my car and sitting in freezing cold seats every morning is no fun at all. If it's the weekend or I have time off work, then I don't mind.
  8. For Leicester, this was an easy 9/10 winter. More snow days and greater depth, then any I can remember (even the supposed great winters in the past decade wern't great here). I still eagerly await the day where a snow event delivers more than 10cm in Leicester It would be amazing to see 30 or 40cm for once... roll on winter of '18/'19.
  9. Actual big flaked somewhat wet English snow, I like it, accumulates so fast
  10. Oops, almost missed this. For some reason I didnt think it was due to arrive til 11pm so I paid no attention til I happened to see out the window. Roads already covered, probably another centimeter here. Coming down steady.
  11. This event and the one in mid december is easily the best I can remember in Leicester for me personally. We did not do well in 12/13, 10 etc. Pretty much all the great winters for the rest of the country were still nothing more than 3 to 5cm at best in Leicester if my memory serves me.
  12. Drifting over fields here, really hard to say how much has fallen, 10cms probablylooking at the 'still air' areas of my garden, but it's still coming down steady. So yeah i'd say transport systems will be... not great Yep everywhere else got an amber the rest of the week when they expected this amount of snow, but midlands ? nah it's fine... just a yellow and we will make very little of it on the news and forecasts. Makes me laugh.
  13. Met Office: "2 to 5cm's, low disruption, just a yellow". wut. Meanwhile I have freaking blizzards, foot high drifts and it's still belting it down. Rural roads becoming impossible.
  14. Big flakes mixed in with the finer powdery stuff now. Looking at the radar you wouldn't think it's that heavy in south Leicestershire, but it is. Amazing scenes outside.
  15. Picture of the current conditions outside, still snowing well (long exposure blurs all the snow together, so you cant really see it in the pic!). Hard to say how much it's snow as it's blowing and drifting all over the place.
  16. To be fair while the models have it down to last a lot longer, the pro's at Met Office on their visuals have it dieing out between 9pm and midnight.
  17. Still coming down well here, but Leicester is under one of the last remaining bigger blobs.
  18. Still going well here. Accumulating nicely now. Great event already.
  19. Really dont understand why Met Office only put a yellow out when there is heavy snow across the entire central swathe of the country during rush hour on a Friday while people are commuting back from work and to home in London and such.
  20. Yeah to be fair it doesn't look too accurate. That said GFS are also going for heavier stuff to the east GFS 4PM (cant get 5pm) 10pm..
  21. But meh premier league champions!!!! LCFC <3 Rest of the midlands teams suck
  22. So interesting for east midlanders, Hirlam has the snow dieing off a little in the east by 8pm, only to pep back up after 10pm. Probably not a 100% accurate and it isn't something that appears on the Arpege, but interesting never the less. Hirlam has been good this week... 8pm: 10pm:
  23. Careful folks Met have a warning out for snow and ice in the English channel. Take it steady on the boats or you'll slide all over the place, maybe crash into a large wave...
  24. At last ! moderate to heavy here. Sticking nicely. Finally
