just cant wait for spring,  never liked the months of december and january ,   my two most despised and hated months of the year ,   we got mild rain in december , and now even worse replaced with cold rain,  yes its raining as I type,   cold dark damp miserable,   winter just go!   at least we are on the upward side now,   as for snow ,  no thanks , but at least its better than incessantly falling and flooding winter rains

I quite like cold weather but as IanR has stated above that's not what we're getting at the moment. I've  just been on the Model thread and people keep saying things like "now the cold is in place". Well it certainly isn't here in the South. It was sunny and 8c at times today with light winds. At best this is cool. Any precipitation falling will be rain/sleet i'm afraid.

And people were slating the Met Office for not going with prolonged cold and snow.... Looks like they were right all along, but we'll have to see how the next few days go and if this trend continues.

........and rather Ironically the UKMO is the best option at this stage! They must have sight of other variables that we are not privy to as well as the knowledge and expertise of experienced forecasters.  You have to tip your hat to them.

  3. Can anyone tell me when the supposed cold spell/snap is going to start here in the South? I've seen all the headlines re Arctic conditions and other members on the forums' are raving about how cold it's going to be. Whilst there has been a small sprinkle of snow overnight, I would say the temps are only a little down on average and even the wind chill is only making it feel slightly cooler. I'm walking around my house in t-shirt and shorts and haven't even put the heating on. I posted the other day that this is not the bone-aching cold of winter's in the 1970's and I stand by that. I think we are all so desperate for some good old fashioned winter that we are clinging on to a spell which years ago would have been average winter conditions.

  4. I think you should look at the radar again , your exaggerating so much there, it's an intense area of snow , it wouldn't go anywhere as it is at the minute until midnight at least, it has lost a bit of intensity , but still reds , greens , yellows in there , it will wax and wane a little , but it's a very snowy night , and some places will get over 20cm

Had another look at the radar and watched the TV forecast (BBC1) and nothing there to say it will be snowing for any more than a couple of more hours in the East of the Region here. I accept it will go on snowing for sometime to the West and I hope you get a deluge. Maybe I was a bit IMBY with my post. Take care.

  5. Still fairly heavy snow here. Looks around 2cm, judging by the snow on top of my car. Quite tricky to tell in the dark though! The met office have heavy snow for me for the rest of the day, and light snow for tomorrow until 6pm. Looking at the radar though, it seems to be fizzling out to the east of this region? Hopefully I'm seeing things!

I've also seen that forecast for it to snow most of the night and through the day tomorrow. Not sure where it is going to come from though looking at the radar! I think we will be lucky for it to continue much past 8pm tonight.

  6. What?! I know what you're saying is that we haven't seen exceptionally low temperatures, but here day time maxima have been 0.8c or lower for all of the past 8 days, including today, where it's been sub-zero on three of those days and overnight on Tuesday we saw -9c.

Day time temps in and around Petersfield have been in the region of 2c-5c. Below average yes, but not with that bitter feel. It maybe the winds haven't been that brisk or the fact we're located not too far from the sea. Night time temps haven't been extravegantly cold either.

I'm not saying it hasn't been cold in other areas Tom and it has been a great couple of weeks. Ironically it is forecasted to be -5 here tonight!

  7. There are many odd features to this present cold spell, not least of which is that it isn't actually that cold! Seems an odd thing to say but the thickness values have been hovering around 528 throughout, unlike say 2010 when they got down to 516 and below - that IS cold. But, all credit to the Met for the accuracy of their snow distribution forecasts.

Come to think of it OMM you're right! Although it has been snowy and we have had the odd frost, it hasn't been that cold - something that really hasn't crossed my mind.

Not as cold as 1963 I bet! I posted on the SW/C England thread that I was born in April 1963 and that my mum would have been heavily pregnant throughout that winter. I can't even begin to imagine how she coped - how anyone coped!

I'm no expert on blocked patterns but I will bow to your greater knowledge and use it as a further straw to clutch!

  8. Even an amateur like me can see there are more than mere hints of a pattern change back to mild zonal, the cold block looks done for by the end of next weekend unless there is a miracle.

Alex Deakin must have some reason/evidence to support what on the face of it is a bold statement from such a high profile forecaster. Not sure he would be sticking his head above the parapet like that otherwise. I agree with you Frosty that the mild appears to be a done deal at this stage but I would love to know what made Alex say this.

  9. Agreed. Having driven to Exeter today I feel a little guilty for being grumpy as folk south of Cullompton have literally nothing at all. Fingers crossed we might get lucky on Tues/Weds, but I sense that rain is more likely than snow on this occasion. Too much of a westerly component to the airflow.

Were you trying to break into the Met's supercomputer catacol or just on a social. TBH I think you're right. Today's snow as heavy as it was in places didn't really amount to much in the South and my gut feeling is it won't again tomorrow. However, one saving grace may be the freezing overnight temps in the West. If the precip came early enough in the day then maybe, just maybe......

  10. I have lost all optimism. Friday a non event: 3cm lying snow. Dry yesterday with melt. Dry today. Dry tomorrow. Tuesday rain, or too far out west. Warm up by weekend and possibility of atlantic driven weather the week after. GP gone quiet on his forecast too. Cars driving through town with 4 inches on their tops while I stare at a concrete drive with nothing on it. If I banked all the model runs from the last few days and looked at them in mid summer I would swear that precipitation amounts would have to be at least 10mm and possibly as much as 20 or 30 mm over the course of a few days. As it is this is the most underwhelming cold winter spell compared to operational charts I can remember. I have dreamed of undercutting lows over a cold block for years: now they come and it is a damp squib so far.

Have you got a cold shield where you live Catacol????!!!

  11. That was fab - thanks BBC 2 and Cliff Michelmore! I was just 2 years old at the time... smile.png

Back to the here and now... any similar patterns?

I was born in April 1963 so my mum would have been heavily pregnant with me throughout. How on earth she managed to get through it I will never know and she's not around unforunately to ask now. Amazing snowscapes which must have got quite terryfying especially for those not so well off.

  12. I was very pleased with what i got much more than i expected slight thaw now tho, but expected to freeze over again tonight not quite had 18cm but at least 4 inches of snow, more in drifts.

Id like to see other places get what they deserve now, i couldn't be happier, filton was the place that recorded 18cm of snow.

Oh yes, Filton. I knew it was one of you guys near Bristol who copped the most snow. What a day it was!
