  1. I tell you what some of these squalls with the passing showers don't half pack a punch this is the sting in the storms tail, near calm and sunshine 1 minute lashing it down and 55-60mph gusts the next!
  2. I think that's where I was getting mixed up with perhaps lol but in actual fact it was Gorleston and given the fact the amount of devastation caused by that storm compared to anything since I don't think that wind measurement was exaggerated, I personally have found Wikipedia to be very accurate with its information despite some of the bad press it receives from time to time and it says on there that the highest winds in Essex and Kent gusted upto 120mph and that was talking in general terms and considering that no storms since not even October 2000 with supposedly 90mph gusts left caravan sites and whole areas of woodland and forest flattened like they'd been nuked like was the case in 87 then who are we to argue with the sums?
  3. I personally found 2000 to be alot worse and there's been no mention of 80-90mph inland gusts only on coasts inland more like in the 60's mph
  4. Maybe I misquoted then but I can't remember the name of the place then but it's on Wikipedia and it was definitely somewhere in Norfolk.
  5. You just contradicted yourself because originally you said last night was worse then 2000 lol. Usually I only experience 50 - 60mph gusts also as I'm nowhere near the sea which is roughly what we had last night maybe locally 70 but in Oct 2000 we had 90 mph gusts even here, I'm guessing that Burns Day was similar with 1987 being slightly worse!
  6. I'm assuming you missed the full effects of October 2000 then?..cause last night was bad don't get me wrong but 2000 was considerably worse particularly given the relentlessly high sustained wind.
  7. No the 122mph at Folkestone in Norfolk was official and there's no way even if the equipment was abit faulty that it could have been that far wrong, it's on the Great Storm Wikipedia article if you want to take a look, there's no mention of the gust being disqualified on there!
  8. Yes that's what I remember about the 2000 storm also the very high constant speed probably about 45-50mph in itself if not more, this winters storms over inland areas at least have been quite gusty but with calm periods between gusts so lower average speeds, the average speed in 1987 taken over the UK as a whole was over 80mph.
  9. Yes I can imagine it was horrendous, 2000 was bad enough I remember asking my dad the next morning if that was what 87 was like and he said categorically no but not far off 80-90mph as opposed to 100mph+
  10. I thought a Barometer measured winds or is that rain? I get these things mixed up all the time lol. But those where the gusts in 1987 I've read about it on Wikipedia and watched some documentaries on it.
  11. Lol clearly not I was only 14 but remember it like yesterday it left such an impression on me, it was terrifying no other word for it!
  12. I know it's high up but the barometer at the top of the BT Tower in London recorded 107mph before it stopped taking readings, Shoreham recorded 115mph and Folkestone in Norfolk reached 122mph the highest gust recorded on British mainland in the channel islands gusts of over 130mph where reported.
  13. Same here mate stronger than both St Jude and 23rd December, it's starting gusting quite hard again in the last 15 minutes I almost got blown over taking the washing out to the tumble dryer in our garage.
  14. Surely even if they didn't cause as much damage where you are you would still remember the horrendous noise they made? .. we coped it badly here anyway, offshore in the North Sea not far from you in the 2000 storm Hurricane force 12 was reported with mean speeds of over 80mph and a gust of 109mph so I'm amazed you don't remember that 1 at least!
  15. It appears you and Steve C had it worse then me in St Jude then being near the Essex / East Anglian coast that's understandable I understand that's where the storm intensified as it passed out into the North Sea in Denmark it reached 120 mph now that would have been more like 1987 if not worse but as I'm in southern Essex just within Greater London the St Jude sting jet effect only lasted about 45 minutes max here and gusts didn't get above 60mph last night they did and lasted several hours and the same in October 2000 and 2002 which lasted longer and we had 80-90mph gusts so I'm guessing you've just chosen to forget those storms too? lol
  16. Hmmm....St Jude was very overhyped and passed in the blink of an eye, the gusts probably seemed stronger because the trees where still in full leaf which makes them sway more and makes them more vulnerable. If this storm had struck in October the damage to plantation would have been much greater!
  17. I'm still to witness anything as unforgettably frightening as October 2000 when we had mean winds of about 45-50mph with gusts of 85-90mph+ the sound from that was just psychopathic!
  18. Well I'll remember this 1 above all the others as for from my location not only has it been the most prolonged storm lasting all night and still going although not as severe as earlier but it's also been the strongest. St Jude max gust from my weather station was 55mph, 23rd December we had 59mph and last night we had 63mph so it was the most intense from my perspective probably the biggest storm since March 2004 so nearly a decade since we last had something that wild.
  19. Morning folks quick update still windy here but not as ferocious as during the night there seemed to be 2 peaks 1 was at around midnight where we had a gust of 63mph and something crashed over a couple of doors down I can't see any damage from my bedroom though so perhaps it was the other side of the house then the next wave of extreme wind came at about 3am and it woke me from a deep sleep as I had managed to doze off for a couple of hours during the calmer lull (my mistake) it scared the crap out of me my house was rumbling must have topped 70mph my estimate. Hope everyone stayed safe!
  20. Really heavy shower here now the rain being driven into my window by the wind and lashing hard, it's getting nasty!
