Lightning to our sw here. Boyfriend was sat outside and strangest thing happened, I heard a rush and whoosh sound, i was sat indoors. Was a very heavy burst of fat rain drops for a few seconds, was so brief! Left rain drop marks on patio. Most odd !
Had that too. A very intense burst of rain that lasted about 1 second then "normal" rain.

yep just been out watching it it has since stopped producing lightning as often
Frequency about every 60 secs from here (I do have a good vantage point)
First spots of rain already
-
Another very distant but very big flash that lit up the entire western sky!
-
Yep, can confirm distant flashes to my S.W. Wasn't looking for it or expecting it but even the wife saw it from the loft window so it must be true!!
-
Thunder started up again very suddenly. Seems to be to the south.
-
Had 3 or 4 rumbles of thunder but now stopped.
-
Just as a point of comparison (and please correct me if I am wrong) but I seem to remember that the 11am temp on Aug 10th 2003 was around 33c in the London area.
-
29C at London City Airport. Not even midday yet
34 is surely on the cards as I can't see any potential factors that will slow the heating...
-
Unbearably humid here. A little bit of mid level instability directly above me but nothing convincing just yet.
-
Torrential rain for 5 mins here, now eased, only sporadic thunder mostly to the north.
-
I can hear distant thunder now
-
Yes and that stuff in the Channel has suddenly appeared, organising and marching north.
Tom.
Great stuff. Can see the towers in the haze from my window now!
-
That development to the SW of London becoming more organised by the second!
-
Is that cumulonimbus that I see forming over the Streatham-Clapham area? I've rarely seen a cloud develop so quickly as the warm air becomes unstable and moves upwards.
Yes (almost) I can see the cloud you mean from my loft in Twickenham! Another just to its north!
-
A few quite "interesting" looking towers now in the W. London area.
-
thought so can just make them out here
Can confirm a scattering of small mid-level "towers" around S.W London. Plenty of work to do yet though!
-
Yay first storm Of the year deep booms to I think to my south thunder every two min seems a bit fat yet not overhead no lightning as yet who has this?
Was directly overhead here in Twickenham about 20 mins ago but has drifted to north-east. Now clear (ish) to our south.
-
Massive lightning strikes and torrential rain here in Twickenham!
Died out as quickly as it arrived! Wow!
-
Anyone else had thunder? Had one solitary but massive bolt of lightning here in Twickenham about 15 mins ago!
-
noIs it likely to snow tomorrow too?
-
slight upgrade in snowfall here but nothing significant. Think I will call it a day with 2cm max on lawn and car.
-
Lighter again in Twickenham. 2cm on lawn. Still nothing on roads.
-
Still moderate (never heavy) in Twick. Temp falling and now 0.2 (from 1.4 at 7pm)
-
Getting a little heavier but don't believe that all of west London has 2-5cm, it doesn't. 1-2cm at best here and only on favoured surfaces..

Weird, second shower in the last hour with absolutely no cloud overhead and no obvious culprit anywhere to be seen (there's a near full moon). I am fully aware of the "detached precipitation" phenomena but this is strangest example I have ever seen, the only cloud is the odd patch of very well fragmented alto-cumulus, there's no wind and it's not even close to being overhead!
