  1. What I don't understand is with the models showing 850 temps of between -10 and -12 across us tomorrow coming from the east how come the met office is forecasting highs of 3 tomorrow? I would have expected highs to be 0 at most. Maybe they're just overestimating as they tend to do in cold spells . If we can't get an ice day with 850s that low I give up.
  2. Inevitable really when looking at charts 10 days away. How often do they verify? Yesterday everyone was onboard the polar express now it seems to have hit the buffers and the knives are out. I think I might stay out of there for a while.
  3. Either that or they're all still on their Christmas hols and no-one has bothered to update it
  4. MAD thread in full ramp mode. Difficult not to get caught up in the excitement. The most spectacular charts are still 9 or 10 days away so plenty of things can go wrong before then. All that seems certain is it will be pretty chilly early next week maybe frosty depending on cloud amounts. After that wouldn't like to say.
  5. I never mention anything anymore, except to scoff at all the rumours that inevitably get trotted out. I then act surprised if it does actually happen and have to take all the 'i told you sos' on the chin.
  6. I don't think the wording has changed at all for days. Very unusual.
  7. From what I can gather in the MAD thread the signal for the SSW has been lost or the reversal is going to be at 70 degrees north and not 60. I seem to remember this happening a few years back and it didn't do us any favours in terms of cold weather. They now seem to be chasing a cold spell which looks similar to the one forecast before Christmas that never happened. Difficult to tell what is actually going on as there are some overly optimistic and some equally overly pessimistic posters in there. Meanwhile the actual weather continues windy and mild.
  8. Very mild outside today. It was a bit windy overnight but that has calmed down and there was virtually no rain and there is even a bit of sunshine now. It's a comfortable 18.6 indoors with no heating on. Whilst not very festive at least this weather is keeping the heating bills down.
  9. Just looks like a few days of cold, very windy unpleasant weather just before/over Christmas before it warms up again. Can't see any snow for us, maybe on hills up north but not here. Looks like nw winds not n or ne so no good for us. That lake effect snow looks incredible.
  10. December has never been a particularly wintery month in my part of the world. In fact growing up in the 70s and 80s I don't remember much in the way of snow before Christmas. December 1981 was the notable exception with several snow storms and snow on the ground from early in the month until just after Christmas. December 1978 saw a lot of snow between Christmas and new year but not before. I think there were a couple of cold Decembers in the 90s and early 2000s but they were more frosty than snowy. In fact snow has been more common in December in more recent years 2009, 2010, 2017 and 2022 all had decent falls. For me it's the lack of snow in January and February that is more marked now.
  11. Aaaand not such a good update today. Toned down quite a bit from yesterday. "Later next week, in the run up to Christmas, there are indications of rain and showers developing more widely. There is also a chance of winds switching to more of a northwesterly direction, allowing conditions to become a little colder, with a risk of some wintry showers developing in the north. However, at this stage there is little sign of any widespread or severe cold and wintry weather."
  12. Last bit of the 17th to 26th sounds like an encouraging update. "It now looks probable that there will be at least one short-lived colder interlude next week, with a period of north or northwesterly winds that could bring some snow and ice, especially in the north."
  13. Another hard frost last night. Today looks like being the last really cold day. East of England met office forecast talking of rain, sleet and possibly snow tonight, although there is no warning for our region so I guess they aren't expecting any snow to amount to much. Rain for Sunday and Monday and temps about 5 or 6 for the rest of the week rising to 10 by Friday but that's a long way off. So looks like a cold week coming up but not much in the way of wintry weather. Looks like a lack of frost after tonight as well with too much cloud around.
  14. Yes, that worked. I had to change the DNS from sky to the Google ones, 8.8.8.8 primary and 8.8.4.4 secondary. Maybe sky blocks it for some reason. Thanks again.
  15. That's the trouble with issuing long range forecasts. The further ahead you go the less likely you are to be correct. Then you have to change it everyday to keep it semi accurate. The way the models change it doesn't seem worth going more than a week ahead.
  16. There seems to be a snow and ice warning down the east coast covering parts of this region. It just about covers where I am. Reading the warning it seems to be mostly for ice. Might see a few flakes falling, if lucky. UK weather warnings WWW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK
  17. I have an issue with my Netatmo weather station, which I've had for years and I can't get it working anymore. At some point over the summer the batteries in the outdoor module died, I don't really bother much with it in the Summer so left it. Also over the Summer the indoor module was disconnected for a while as I was decorating the room it was in. I decided to get it up and running the other day but it has me stumped. Usually after changing the batteries in the outdoor module it will be back up and running shortly afterwards. But checking the app it's complaining that it can't connect to the wifi network. I don't remember it ever doing this before, I thought it was working off bluetooth. But anyway I went through all the set-up steps, restarted the indoor module and reconnected it to the app. That worked fine but the next step, to connect to the wifi network fails with "Unable to connect to the Domain Name System server (DNS)". I have checked my wifi network is ok and has the correct settings listed on the Netatmo website and all looks good. I have even tried installing the app on my phone, which I had never done before, so a completely new install but still the same error. It finds wifi and attempts to connect but then fails after a few minutes. I've tried rebooting the router and using the WPS button on it but nothing works. Like I say this was previously working fine and nothing in my set-up has changed, same internet provider, same router, same Netatmo kit, same device the app is running on. If anyone has come across this issue before I would appreciate some advice. I like to know what the temperature is outside and it's upsetting me that I have to guess now Thanks Mike
