  1. Presumably due to all the cold flooding down into the USA and firing up the jet stream. Seems to be the same most year's these days. The last thing we need is a fortnight of storms with copious amounts of rain
  2. Me too, I have ignored them for years and tell everyone I know to do the same, especially when someone refers to them! My Mum has always fell for this nonsense, although once they (and she) got it right in the very early 90's, might have been 1991 I was 15 so still young. I recall fondly phoning home saying I was going to stay over at a friends and Mum saying that they have forecast snow overnight and that you should think about coming home. I said they always they say this and nothing ever happens! (nothings changed! ) Well, the next morning was one of the biggest dumpings of snow I have ever seen in Nottingham, must have been around 1-2ft easily. I managed to get into the city centre, before they cancelled all the bus services, the snow was knee deep, the one and only time I experienced this in the city itself. It was quite awesome. Looking back it would have been great to have had a mobile phone, but alas that tech was still in its infancy, expensive and the size of brick Like one of the other posters mentioned up thread, it is hard not to get disillusioned with Winter in the UK these days and the older I get the more I think I won't get to experience a truly severe Winter like a 47, 63, 79, or 82. I was born in 75 so don't recall 79 and barely remember anything from 82. I do remember enjoying Winters in the mid 80's though, probably where my love of snow came from and dragging a sledge to primary school I suspect the rest Winter (following next week) may now go the way of the , hoping it doesn't, but once a pattern changes back to mild and the vortex gets reorganised it's usually always a bad sign
  3. After weeks of looking at amazing charts its looking like next week may just be dry and very cold, not what the majority on here will want at this time of year I'm sure, myself included I love nothing more than disruptive snow and it seems just so hard to get to our small island these days. We were fortunate to get around 4 inches in the cold spell in December, hope that's not all we see this winter and I genuinely feel for those that haven't seen a flake I suppose it hasn't happened yet, but even Laura Toben was saying on GMTV this morning that although snow is forecast, it is only a low probability and may only affect the south before turning back to rain You can't help but think if this all does come to pass and we don't get a good dumping or lengthy cold spell, with the synoptics we have on offer, what on earth would it take As ever, time will tell!
  4. I am due to travel from Nottingham to Hemel to attend a funeral of a relative on the morning of the 19th If these charts come close to fruition, I doubt very much I would get there! Stunning charts this morning - Thanks to all who contribute so much of their time and knowledge to this forum
  5. Sorry to anyone that woke up to nothing or just a light dusting, been there so many times over the year's so I feel your pain We fared much better this time around, with around 2-3 inches falling over night. It actually feels quite a bit warmer outside so not sure if it will stay around for long or if we'll see anymore today / tomorrow, would be great if we did One things for sure, my love of cold weather and snow has been reignited this morning and this past week
  6. indeed, when it is this marginal I tend not to get too excited tbh, especially at this time of year as it's not usually the white stuff thats falling out of the sky unless in the usual favoured areas or at elevation
  7. Relentless westerlies, wind and rain, usually leading to flooding! Like it was about 3 weeks ago! Basically, utter filth and the worse kind of winter weather...
  8. Winters are just so deprressing these days in UK. Its always been a struggle to get snow, but the relentless rain is too much. It doesn't even feel that cold outside today - cool and breezy for sure, but not cold. Still not seen a flake this winter, hope it changes soon, but not feeling confident. that it will any time soon...
  9. As predicted, there is no snowy breakdown here in Notts, just drizzly rain. I was outside gardening earlier, just clearing up leaves etc. Ground was still rock hard but it felt quite pleasant and not overly cold compared with recent days. I never get excited about snowy breakdowns as they have always been a let down. Not seen a flake or even a grupel grain! Lets hope we can see some snow in Jan or Feb, after a soggy November as I have had my fill of getting drenched while out walking the doggy. Could be one of those winters again where it is a case of so near and yet so far - with those lucky so on so's in the States getting clobbered again! We'll just have to wait and see....
  10. Absolutely @John88B fingers crossed but I won't be holding my breath, especially given that we barley had a frost this morning and the frozen ponds and brooks are all melting already! Must be some milder air mixing in already
  11. I really dislike marginal systems, as for us, they never deliver a snow to rain event, it always just rain.
  12. All weather channels on the gogglebox seem very bullish on it getting milder from the weekend and into the following week
  13. Looks really wonderful - Sadly the East Midlands have missed out this time around, although there's still time! It's just very cold and grey, even the frosts have lifted, which is a real shame as I like Hoar frost as much as snow
  14. Truly, the saddest of news, I really do feel for the parents. I never understand why children take such risks to be honest, we never did as children growing up in 80's. We still had lots of fun in the cold weather, turning the playground into an ice ring (creating a giant skid patch in the ice - probably why my knees are shot!), building snowmen, having crazy snow ball fights , sledging etc.
  15. I'll believe it when I see once I see something fluffy and white falling from the sky
  16. I lived in Uttoxeter last Winter but missed most of the snow as I was down in Devon visiting my folks when the snow came, so am definitely craving my snow fix.
  17. Thanks @Sheikhy, even the frsot we had has melted today, which is a shame as thats the next best thing. We have fared okay in the past, 2010 and 2013 being the standouts in the last 20 years or so. I am sure we'll see some this Winter though
  18. The thing that frustrates me the most about the regional and main weather forecasting is there apparent surprise of having Winter weather, in, err, Winter! I know it's not guarunteed in the UK but it should hardly come as any great surprise. I often wonder what they would be saying if we had a nailed on 62/63 type Winter on the cards! Who knows, perhaps this year we will, as the model thread has been very lively of late! It would be typical of the UK to get one when there is a Energy / Cost of living crisis going on...
  19. 73' for parts of Boston, now that's a winter storm! Need to move to the States for my snow fix it seems! https://youtu.be/zYtH32NYJk4
