  1. And it's the familiar story of snow that failed to settle. I sure hope that the event later next week is a lot better than this.
  2. Here in Bearsden the snow has been as heavy as it has been all day but unfortuantly it isn't heavy enough to settle on the wet ground.
  3. More snow flurries today but recently in the afternoon it has turned just a bit marginal. I'm delighted to hear that some areas have had a great snow event so far but for some other areas it's been a bit underwhelming. The temperatures have been alright but I'd imagine that a combination of factors have resulted in a lack of lying snow - wet ground, light snow, too windy... - and even in some of the hardest hit areas it was a bit marginal in the afternoon but I suppose that is to be expected at this time of year. Maybe as temperatures fall tonight, conditions could be bit more favourable but more organised, heavy and widespread precipitation is also needed. I'm quite happy at just seeing snow this stage in the season, but given the potential this set-up had then I suppose it's been a bit underwhelming. Then later this week, there is another go at a frontal snowfall but this sort of set-up has been quite common since the New Year and last minute changes resulted in the front failing to reach Scotland. For this end of the central belt, a few possible scenarios is that the front fails or make progress beyond Glasgow, or if the front makes progress across the country, it will certainly fall as snow initially but the region will be on border line of the more marginal conditions to the south west, or the profoundly less-marginal conditions to the north east but in the future runs I'm sure other scenarios will emerge.
  4. Yeah, what surprised me that all of this snow has arrived well ahead of schedule so it seems that the worst is yet to come. So how and why on earth the met office haven't issued a red warning?! I presume that the NMM shows quite a severe scenario for more eastern areas but what effect will the front have on more central areas?
  5. Great stuff! How about a Kilted competion to guess the snow depth at lorenzo's. I'd say Livingston is going to have quite a night, so I'll go for a depth of 22cm.
  6. Snow is back on again but this nothing compared to what some other areas are experiencing. Truly exceptional for the second half of March. Radar looking interesting, especially for Fife, parts of the Lothians, Angus and southern Aberdeenshire whilst Aberdeen is having a bit of a lull. A snowy night is instore and it should last well into Tuesday but the action will vary in location throughout the night. Here, I'll be delighted with at least a cm but I'm really looking forward to the reports and pictures in the worst affected areas. If the M-8 is already bad with depths near 2 inches in some spots in the Lothains and Lanarkshire, then there could be some amazing scenes by morning but I'd suspect as consequence from now on, transport distruption should get progressively worse in some spots and it could be a really chaotic rush hour. Traffic cameras are worth keeping an eye, especially the M-8 and other badly affected and busy routes.
  7. And the snow is back on with the flakes blowing around a fair bit in the wind making a very wintry scene under the orange glow of the lampost. Hopefully there'll now be further and more regular showers moving south east across the Campsies from Stirling/North Fife.
  8. Moderate snow back on but heavier and persistent snow is needed for any accumilations. Perhaps this is a lull before more organised snowfall later in the night?
  9. A moderate snow shower has just passed but that the radar doesn't look as promising as it was earlier.
  10. Steady-light snow for the last half-hour - feeling bitter in the fresh easterly wind. Brrr. Radar shaping up nicely for eastern areas.
  11. Just had another light snow flurry and it's now brighter with more clear intervals.
  12. Preciptation has exploded in the Moray Firth during the past hour but the Black Isle and Inverness remain dry.
  13. Skies have been mostly overcast and grey like they have been throughout the weekend with only a few brighter pockets just now. There's been a mix of rain/sleet and some snow flurries . Judging by various charts, forecasts and warnings by the Met office some parts are going to see a lot of snow during the next 24hrs. Eastern areas such as the Lothians, the Edinburgh and Dundee areas, and parts of Fife, Stirlingshire, the Borders, Tayside and Grampian and parts of Lanarkshire are in prime position to see some persistent, quite heavy snow driven by a brisk easterly wind which should make for bitter and possibly chaotic conditions. Most of the significant accumilations will be on the high ground where depths could exceed 30cm plus drifting, but inland lowland areas could see accumilations of a few inches or more which is quite impressive for this stage in the season. Some of the higher routes along the M-8 minor roads of the Borders and other elevated roads such as the pass of the Carin O'Mount could have very poor driving conditions and settlements above 100m could have a distruptive start to Tuesday morning. Further west, in Glasgow and the surrounding regions, there should be at least a few flurries making it through the Forth-Clyde valley and perhaps more persistent snow in eastern regions such as North Lanarkshire. For my own region, as always East Dunbartonshire's central location means that it's the middle of the action (on either side of the central belt during convective easterlies or westerlies) so it's hard to judge how much activity there'll be here. It's likely that there should be some snow in the area which will be nice to see this late in the season, but any measurable snow-depth would be the latest I've ever seen here. Anyway, regardless of what happens here it sure is going to be an active couple of days for parts of the country and pretty notable too given how late we are into March and another thing to keep an eye on is the maximum/minimum temperature values which could be exceptionally cold for this time of year.
  14. Just freezing cold rain so far today although Glasgow airport did report snowfall earlier this morning. This coming week is setting up to be quite significant for winter conditions this late in the season/ Plenty of chances of snowfall, especially in eastern areas, and it starts tonight with a spell of snowfall likely for some areas. It would be very special if some areas received a couple of inches during the coming days but I'd settle for a few extra snowfalls to add up the tally for this month and the season aswell as the last sub 5C maximum of the season. This should make for a nice finale to the winter weather of the 2012/2013 season with a cold March mean temperature also likely but don't rule out spells of wintry weather during April - such as last year - amongst the established Spring conditions.
  15. No snow here so far with light rain throughout the morning but it could still change. The fine lines between rain and snow from region to region never ceases to perplex.
  16. Very cold last night with -8C reported at Glasgow airport which is the joint coldest temperature of the 2012/2013 season and the last time there was a colder minimum there was in December 2010. There was still some patches of lying snow in shaded areas, about a third of my garden was covered which probably isn't enough to count as a lying snow day. Once the sun was up the temperature rose above freezing with a maximum of 8C. Some sunny intervals throughout the day, now a clear and cold night with the temperature already below freezing. It's always nice to see some late winter conditions and Spring snowfall at this time of year but this spell in some sense has been pretty exceptional. Some snow showers tonight for parts of Scotland exposed to the northerly wind. The cold/chilly Spring weather look set to persist throughout the middle-third of this month. There may be brief spells of less cold uppers, such as later this week but in general, if the current synoptic theme continues then uppers should be below -5C for the best part of the next 10 or so days. A prolonged cold spell for Spring standards, but with the strength of the sun maximum temperatures could be close to the average. But certainly, it will be interesting to see how things end up, there is the potential for this month to be pretty cold overall and is already looking like being a very different month compared to this time last year.
  17. Temperature of -7C at Glasgow airport. -8C is the coldest of the winter, -9C in 2001 was the coldest March temperature and the last tme -10C was recorded at Glasgow airport was Boxing Day 2010!
  18. Great to see all the reports of the snow in eastern parts of the country in what has been a very decent spell of winter weather and it's all the more significant for the fact that it's not just March but close to mid-March. Here, well, much of the snow cover has gone except in the shaded areas with the strength of the sun. Some snow flurries here but today could have been the last of the snow for the season. Went on a drive around the Trossachs earlier and everything looked and felt like the depths of winter except the time/length of daylight. Maximum temperature only 3C at Glasgow airport which is one of the coldest maximum values for March in many years - only March 2001 had a colder maximum value of 2C. Tonight should see the temperature drop to below -5C in many areas - and it could be the last sub -5C night for some time in a few areas. In some spots in the highlands, another night of sub -10C minima is possible and this can only bode well for a cold looking mean temperature for the month. Potentially the coldest temperature of the season could be recorded somewhere tonight! The cold, wintry theme should continue for a while but the last the weather of the past few days and tonight may be the last of the significant winter weather until next season.
  19. In recent years: 12th March 2011 (-0.5C max Dalwhinnie) 30th March 2010 (-0.1C max Dalwhinnie)
  20. Really cold out there on a wonderful sparkly and starry night.
  21. Just come backl from a trip from my relatives in Fife. Some snow cover during the afternoon on the hills and around Powmill. Nothing much around Falkland to begin with and spent much of the afternoon and evening with a super view of Fife, East Lomond and Edinburgh. It was stunning to see the snow showers crossing over, some were pretty heavy and few impressive cumulonimbus clouds funneling down the Forth. Bitterly cold on the hill on a very wintry evening There was more snow in lowland Fife during the way back and some pretty tricky driving conditions on the mate. I was very surprised to see that there was a very similar, if not better covering of snow around Glasgow than there was back in Fife. Here, there is a cm of snow and everything is white and sparkling. That's probably the fourth decent lying snow event of the winter and possibly the best day for snow here since March 2006! Anyway it's delightful to see this sort of very wintry and cold weather in March. Looking forward to a cold night and to hearing reports of the winter weather across the country!
  22. Currently the heaviest snowfall of the winter and it's starting to settle too.
