  1. 7 Sep 29.3 at Kinloss beats 26.5 at Lossiemouth in 1988. Latest 29C has been recorded and warmest September day in Scotland since 1906.
  2. June 2023 was the warmest on record in Scotland with a mean temperature of 14.3C (bearing the previous record of 13.4C in 1940).
  3. According to the Met office a heatwave in this part of the world is three consecutive days of 25C: Prior to this year at Glasgow airport the highest total of 25C+ days recorded in June was 4 (1982, 1986, 1995, 2018) and for 27C+ days 2 (1986, 1989, 1995, 2018). Overall, since 1973, there have only been 4 spells of 4 consecutive 27C+ days. This month has seen 5 consecutive days of 26C+ and 4 27C+ days. Not bad for mid June.
  4. There was a bright flash followed barely a second later by a loud clap of thunder. Other than that some faint flashes and rumbles abs heavy rain which has eased for now. An impressive pink cumulonimbus cloud to the east.
  5. Late May-June is normally the best for sunny and settled conditions and there have been some excellent starts to summer in recent years but this is easily the best start to summer I can remember. We’ve had a few weeks of dry, sunny conditions and pleasant temperature in the high teens/low twenties followed by a very hot spell of temperatures in the high twenties - you can’t really ask for more. This week has been exceptional in terms of heat. Previously the highest number of 25c+ days in June at Glasgow airport was 4 and most 27c+ days just 2. In any month the long rest run of 27C+ is 4. Today was the 5th consecutive day of 26C after 4 days of 27C. That’s exceptional in any summer month let alone the first half of June. Now I’m hearing rumbles of thunder to the south. After today we’ll experience lower temperatures (but still mostly warm) and some much needed rainfall. Hopefully we’ll there’ll be further fine, sunny conditions with warm/hot temperatures but I doubt anything will exceed what we’ve experienced so far (although we could achieve higher temperatures if the conditions are right). Whatever happens this summer has already provided a memorable and notable period of weather.
  6. An absolutely stunning summer’s day and another hot one with Glasgow airport recording 28C again. A fantastic start to summer.
  7. This thread is for discussing notable weather events in Scotland which are record breaking or statistically significant. Feel free to post forecasts or reports of significant or record breaking weather. Records could be daily/monthly/seasonal/annual and occur nationally/regionally/locally for all sorts of weather. Files can be downloaded in rank or year order. Last August I compiled a mostly accurate record of the warmest temperatures in each day of the year in Scotland. I updated it last night and since then there have been a few new additions: 10 Nov 18.9 Kinloss 2022 11 Nov 19.1 Lossiemouth 2022 12 Nov 16.8 Dunbar 2022 13 Nov 17.5 Achiltibuie, Poolewe, Port Henderson 2022 10 Jun 29.8 Auchincruive 2023 12 Jun 30.7 Threave 2023 It seems likely today saw a new daily record. Yesterday’s temperature in Threave was a new record June record for the station and I believe Dumfries and Galloway. Only two dates in the calendar have recorded a higher temperature earlier than the 12th June. 8. Last August I attempted to compile a record of the highest temperatures of each day of the year for Scotland. It should be mostly accurate and today and yesterday have most likely set new daily records for Scotland. 9. Threave recorded 30.1C today so another year above 30C. Glasgow airport also recorded 28C - normally the annual warmest temperature there is 27C/28C but it’s unusual to record such a temperature this early in the season and even more so without largely clear skies. Scotland records hottest day as heatwave hits - BBC News WWW.BBC.CO.UK Threave in Dumfries and Galloway reaches 30.1C as the Met Office confirms that Scotland is experiencing a heatwave.
  10. In the UK only 2 of the last 8 years failed to record 35C with 37C+ recorded in 2019, 2020 and 2022. In the past few years in Scotland we’ve seen: 31.9 in Bishopton (2018), 31.6 in Edinburgh (2019), 30.8 in Prestwick (2020), 29.6 in Kirkcudbrightshire (2021) and 34.8 in Charterhall (2022). There’s definitely been a step change in the past 5 years with higher temperatures more easily achieved. Obviously a warmer atmosphere the main factor though drier soils possibly a factor aswell. That forecast for Dumfries is remarkable (especially before mid June) but not that surprising. I suspect the nearest stations to Dumfries in Eskdalemuir and Dundrennan won’t record 32C though Carlisle might. Considering this summer has started drier than last year I think we could see temperature close to or exceeding the old Scottish record if we get a plume sometime between late June and mid August. The recent rainfall in southern Europe could mean the air might not be as hot as last year though the models are still showing some very high uppers across parts of Europe/N Africa (which has been a feature of recent years). We could do with some more rainfall to the limit the risk of water scarcity and wild fires. Yesterday’s rain was welcome but ultimately too scattered and short lived to have an effect.
  11. A nice warm summer evening after some rain yesterday - which ended a run of 20 days without rain. The Spring was rather uninspiring overall but late May and June so far has been remarkably dry with a lot of warm and fine weather. Not particularly hot with 24C the highest recorded at Glasgow airport so far - we should see reach 25C at some point in the following days. A better start to summer than last year and tne recent weather has reminded me of the early summer weather in 2016, 2018 and 2021. 2018 and 2021 were excellent summers overall while 2016 faded after a promising start. I’d expect we’ve probably seen the best of the settled conditions though I think the hottest weather is probably yet to come. Yesterday nearly saw 30C in Ayrshire which is a notable temperature this early in the season. It seems to be easier to record such temperatures nowadays and should we end up in the firing line of a plume then we could see more widespread temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s.
  12. Oh dear not another 40cm+ snowfall. I can’t wait for the inevitable southward shift or sleet fest once the Met Office issue a warning.
  13. Now got a covering which is more than I expected. It appears the stream is moving south so I doubt there’s more to come.
  14. Well I’m glad to say it has snowed for the first time in nearly two months thanks to a brief but quite heavy shower.
  15. An interesting period of weather coming up. Today’s weather front is further north than expected but not enough to deliver more than a period of light snow in central Scotland with some showers in eastern parts - the very south of Scotland should see accumulating snow tonight. Saturday/Sunday is uncertain in terms of the track and intensity of precipitation. A run of the mill snow to rain scenario is most likely though the front could stall to provided a longer period of snow. Late Sunday/Monday is even more uncertain. It’s quite possible this could produce quite a lot of snow across parts of northern Scotland. I’d like to see this shift a little south as it could deliver a significant snowfall quite widely. Afterwards cold air returns from the north and there is another chance of frontal snow mid next week.
  16. Now -15.6C at Altnaharra so a new coldest temperature of 2023 so far. Other low temperatures: -13.9C Kinbrace -11.9C Loch Glascarnoch -11.3C Resallach -10.5C Braemar -10.1C Balmoral
  17. Already down to -14.6C at Altnaharra. -12.7C at Kinbrace. I think there’s a good chance tonight will be the coldest of the winter so far
