  1. A couple of other stations set new records for September maxima.

I think Kinlochewe, Achnagart, Fyvie Castle and Tyndrum set new records aswell.

Some stations were not far off all time record maxima: Kirkwall (24.8), Loch Glascarnoch (28.0).

  2. Quite a remarkable period of weather across the British Isles. Southern parts of England have had a record number of consecutive 30C+ days for September.

Areas further north have also experienced  exceptional warmth for the time of year.

Yesterday saw Northern Ireland set a provisional record maximum temperature for September with 28.0 at Castlederg.

Other stations in Northern Ireland set new records for September:

    27.3 Magilligan (7 Sep)

    27.1 Aldergrove (8 Sep)

    27.0 Ballypatrick (8 Sep)

    26.6 Thomastown (7 Sep)

    25.6 Glenanne (8 Sep)

    25.5 Lough Fea (8 Sep)

    25.5 Portglenone (8 Sep)

In Scotland the highest September temperature since 1906 was recorded and quite a lot of stations set new record highs for September:

    29.3 Kinloss (7 Sep)

    28.8 Glasgow Bishopton (8 Sep)

    28.7 Lossiemouth (7 Sep)

    28.5 Aviemore (8 Sep)

    28.3 Aboyne (8 Sep)

    28.2 Drumalbin (8 Sep)

    27.8 Altnaharra (8 Sep)

    27.8 Strathallan (8 Sep)

    27.3 Loch Glascarnoch (7 Sep)

    27.2 Edinburgh Gorgarbank (8 Sep)

    27.1 Tain Ridge (8 Sep)

    27.0 Dyce (3 Sep)

    26.6 Aultbea (7 Sep)

    26.1 West Freugh (5 Sep)

    25.5 Machrihanish (8 Sep)

    25.2 Wick (8 Sep)

    24.5 Cairnwell (8 Sep)

    24.4 Islay (7 Sep)

    24.3 South Uist (8 Sep)

    24.1 Kirkwall (8 Sep)

    22.1 Baltasound (8 Sep)

21.3 Bealach na Ba (8 Sep)

    20.7 Lerwick (8 Sep)

    20.2 Cairngorm (8 Sep)

    20.0 Fair Isle (8 Sep)

    19.3 Aonach Mor (8 Sep)

This period of weather would easily have made a decent mid summer heatwave. Had this heatwave occurred a month or two earlier I would imagine southern England would see temperatures in the mid 30s (with a few spots in the high 30s) and low 30s for parts of northern England and Scotland.

    27.8 Altnaharra

    27.2 Edinburgh Gorgarbank

    27.1 Tain Ridge

  4. Joint warmest day of the year at Glasgow airport with 28C - equalling warmest September temperature on the same day in 2021. After the very disappointing weather following the record breaking June this has been a very welcome last hurrah for summer. The past week would make for a decent warm spell in the middle of summer let alone September and it just shows what’s possible this late in the year.

I've recently discussed how abnormal the pattern that's unfolding through weeks 1 into 2 of July across the UK, Iceland, Scandinavia and into Europe is

Incredible seeing 0C and -2C 850hpa temperatures in Scotland during July 🥴 😳

    500hpa temps equally mental

I'd wager these are high on the list of coldest 850hpa temperatures into Scotland for July ever recorded, I really would be interested to get more detailed records but not sure if there are any accessible to the public 🤔 @A Winter's Tale @Jo Farrow

  7. According to the Met office a heatwave in this part of the world is three consecutive days of 25C:

Prior to this year at Glasgow airport the highest total of 25C+ days recorded in June was 4 (1982, 1986, 1995, 2018) and for 27C+ days 2 (1986, 1989, 1995, 2018). Overall, since 1973, there have only been 4 spells of 4 consecutive 27C+ days.

This month has seen 5 consecutive days of 26C+ and 4 27C+ days. Not bad for mid June.

  8. Late May-June is normally the best for sunny and settled conditions and there have been some excellent starts to summer in recent years but this is easily the best start to summer I can remember. We’ve had a few weeks of dry, sunny conditions and pleasant temperature in the high teens/low twenties followed by a very hot spell of temperatures in the high twenties - you can’t really ask for more. This week has been exceptional in terms of heat.

Previously the highest number of 25c+ days in June at Glasgow airport was 4 and most 27c+ days just 2. In any month the long rest run of 27C+ is 4. Today was the 5th consecutive day of 26C after 4 days of 27C. That’s exceptional in any summer month let alone the first half of June.

Now I’m hearing rumbles of thunder to the south. After today we’ll experience lower temperatures (but still mostly warm) and some much needed rainfall. Hopefully we’ll there’ll be further fine, sunny conditions with warm/hot temperatures but I doubt anything will exceed what we’ve experienced so far (although we could achieve higher temperatures if the conditions are right). Whatever happens this summer has already provided a memorable and notable period of weather.

Last August I compiled a mostly accurate record of the warmest temperatures in each day of the year in Scotland. I updated it last night and since then there have been a few new additions:

    10 Nov 18.9 Kinloss 2022

    11 Nov 19.1 Lossiemouth 2022

    12 Nov 16.8 Dunbar 2022

13 Nov 17.5 Achiltibuie, Poolewe, Port Henderson 2022

    10 Jun 29.8 Auchincruive 2023

    12 Jun 30.7 Threave 2023

It seems likely today saw a new daily record. Yesterday’s temperature in Threave was a new record June record for the station and I believe Dumfries and Galloway. Only two dates in the calendar have recorded a higher temperature earlier than the 12th June.

I haven’t done an equivalent for coldest minimum temperature but many dates here include Scotland.

In the past few days it appears Bealach na Ba has recorded an all time maximum and  Auchincruive has set a new record June maximum.

Scotland has recently been experiencing a notable dry period with issues concerning water scarcity.

This thread could be used for unusual weather events such as severe thunderstorms/hail storms/tornadoes, unseasonal snow/freezing rain, flooding/storm surge/landslide, wildfires.

As a result of the recent dry weather we’ve seen Loch Ness drop to the lowest level in decades and the wildfire in nearby Cannich is believed to be the largest on record in the UK.

Firefighters say flames burned through a 30 sq mile area near Cannich but it is now under control.

In the past few years in Scotland we’ve seen: 31.9 in Bishopton (2018), 31.6 in Edinburgh (2019), 30.8 in Prestwick (2020), 29.6 in Kirkcudbrightshire (2021) and 34.8 in Charterhall (2022).

Threave recorded 30.1C today so another year above 30C. Glasgow airport also recorded 28C - normally the annual warmest temperature there is 27C/28C but it’s unusual to record such a temperature this early in the season and even more so without largely clear skies.

Threave in Dumfries and Galloway reaches 30.1C as the Met Office confirms that Scotland is experiencing a heatwave.

Agreed, we’ll be in deep trouble if a proper breakdown doesn’t arrive before the end of June. I wonder if Scotland was as severely affected as England was during 1976, 1995 etc. We’ve surely made a strong start on the lack of rainfall front.

I forgot the BBC no longer use the Met Office for their forecasts and got a shock on countryfile when they used down here as one of the 4 locations for the 5 day forecast. Their prediction for tomorrow will surely be too high but quite shocking to see all the same. Would pretty much tie with last year which was a record (see photo - 32c).

Even if we ‘only’ get 30c, it does seem so easy now to get around 30c. I feel like only 10/20 years ago we had to build to push much above 25c… a worry

    Could contain:

In the UK only 2 of the last 8 years failed to record 35C with 37C+ recorded in 2019, 2020 and 2022. In the past few years in Scotland we’ve seen: 31.9 in Bishopton (2018), 31.6 in Edinburgh (2019), 30.8 in Prestwick (2020), 29.6 in Kirkcudbrightshire (2021) and 34.8 in Charterhall (2022). There’s definitely been a step change in the past 5 years with higher temperatures more easily achieved. Obviously a warmer atmosphere the main factor though drier soils possibly a factor aswell.

That forecast for Dumfries is remarkable (especially before mid June) but not that surprising. I suspect the nearest stations to Dumfries in Eskdalemuir and Dundrennan won’t record 32C though Carlisle might.

Considering this summer has started drier than last year I think we could see temperature close to or exceeding the old Scottish record if we get a plume sometime between late June and mid August. The recent rainfall in southern Europe could mean the air might not be as hot as last year though the models are still showing some very high uppers across parts of Europe/N Africa (which has been a feature of recent years).

We could do with some more rainfall to the limit the risk of water scarcity and wild fires. Yesterday’s rain was welcome but ultimately too scattered and short lived to have an effect.

  12. A nice warm summer evening after some rain yesterday - which ended a run of 20 days without rain. The Spring was rather uninspiring overall but late May and June so far has been remarkably dry with a lot of warm and fine weather. Not particularly hot with 24C the highest recorded at Glasgow airport so far - we should see reach 25C at some point in the following days.

A better start to summer than last year and tne recent weather has reminded me of the early summer weather in 2016, 2018 and 2021. 2018 and 2021 were excellent summers overall while 2016 faded after a promising start. I’d expect we’ve probably seen the best of the settled conditions though I think the hottest weather is probably yet to come. Yesterday nearly saw 30C in Ayrshire which is a notable temperature this early in the season. It seems to be easier to record such temperatures nowadays and should we end up in the firing line of a plume then we could see more widespread temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s.

  13. An interesting period of weather coming up. Today’s weather front is further north than expected but not enough to deliver more than a period of light snow in central Scotland with some showers in eastern parts - the very south of Scotland should see accumulating snow tonight.

Saturday/Sunday is uncertain in terms of the track and intensity of precipitation. A run of the mill snow to rain scenario is most likely though the front could stall to provided a longer period of snow.

Late Sunday/Monday is even more uncertain. It’s quite possible this could produce quite a lot of snow across parts of northern Scotland. I’d like to see this shift a little south as it could deliver a significant snowfall quite widely.

Afterwards cold air returns from the north and there is another chance of frontal snow mid next week.
