  1. Met O now got yellow warning for snow extending across SW West Central and central belt...ssgoinon? I'll defo be taking this warning with a big pinch of grit!

It's probably more of a warning for ice rather than snow as I dont think its likely snow showers will make it across the Grampians. The only reason for such a widespread warning for snow is perhaps a small possibility of a polar low making an appearance.

  2. Another nice winters day. Still a good cover of snow despite some melting. The last big snowfall a couple of weeks ago had a full week of 5cm of snow on the ground. I've not checked the snow depth in a while but I suspect it is below 5cm, but nevertheless it looks like this will be another week's worth of lying snow for the second time this winter - and after two of the best snowfalls since 2010 - which should give this winter a very respectable passmark. I'm hoping for another snowfall in the coming days to add to and perhaps prolong the snow cover. Not too much chance this weekend for Glasgow unless something unexpected comes up such as a polar low whilst some eastern areas could do well. I suppose the next shot at a decent snowfall is Monday night but plenty if details will change in the coming days. I'm not sure about beyond next week, I think everyone is hoping for an easterly or some for, of proper HLB to become established.

  3. I was surprised at the Reporting Scotland forecast suggesting snow in central areas. At the moment I'd say only very southern parts of Argyll, and inland Ayrshire and D&G will get something out of this. Not sure about the front to our north, would be surprised if it crossed the country intact.

  4. Looking good on BBC1 just for snow next few hours for SW and Central Belt, but I won't get my hopes up.

The forecast did look good but unfortunately I think the radar shows the snow missing much of the central belt although parts of Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway could do well.

  5. Lovely winter's day with slight melting in the sun. I'm surprised to hear of a polar low to our NW - wherever it hits it should bring a lot of snow although it looks unlikely to affect much if the central best but SW Scotland could do very well.

  6. There's several easties plus a few lowland Ayrshirites who would argue, with good reason, against that AWT. The snow's back on here and it's now my second deepest dusting of the winter so far!! Perhaps we'll all get something of note in the next six weeks, but it's been a very westerly winter so far.

You are right, a couple if decent polar maritime snow events for Glasgow doesn't justify a successful winter across Scotland, let alone the rest of the UK so it is premature to say the OPI had delivered this winter. I think the next few days may see a change a fortune for eastern parts of Scotland perhaps other parts of the UK.

  7. There seems to be another little band of snow forming around Mull. Surely that can't be much more activity left during the rest of the night. Hopefully most places get a good few inches of snow out of tonight and maybe some more snow tomorrow to add to the cover although I'm a little worried about the possibility of rain tomorrow night. I'm really not sure what to expect with the northerly thus weekend, not expecting too much given the wind direction but the possibility of features appearing at shift notice should generate a lot of interest - a fax chart for Saturday showed an occluded front over the country although I couldn't interpret what I would mean fir sns chances. If we could get another week of lying snow then that would be pretty exceptional.

  8. Very heavy snow back on.

Whilst this winter may not have delivered the sort of blocking you'd associate with very negative OPI, you can't argue that the snow and cold which has unfolded during the middle third - and hopefully the second half of winter - does fit the characteristics of such a reading. The last couple of weeks have seen two snowfalls of more than 5cm. When I come to think of it, I can't recall a single winter month which had two 5cm+ plus snowfalls - maybe December 2009, possibly February 2009.

  9. It made it to Edinburgh too - back lying on the roads again! Looking at all that red streaming in from Fort William it could be a very special night for snowfall for many places, with temperatures around 0C the precip-lying snow ratio will be very favourable so 4+inches achievable for most. :yahoo:

As this band moves east I fancy some eastern parts of the central belt to do very well. What do you reckon tomorrow night has in store - could there be more snow or just rain.

  10. Got a feeling this could be a very memorable snow event for Glasgow and surrounding area.

Perhaps, but it depends on how much more precipitation comes through overnight - for now the radar suggests that the current track of intense showers will track further inland affecting some eastern areas.
