  1. Snow showers here this morning, not much more than a covering so far, and given wind direction they are just clipping the coast and not getting more than a few miles inland. Bitterly cold, but sunny between the showers.
  2. Snow showers now at the coast arfter the earlier graupel and rain, not quite cold enough to settle, but whipped by a strong NW wind its certainly quite unpleasant out. Here forecast for tomorrow morning is more showers, could be quite tricky, but given wind direction they are not getting far inland.
  3. Not as cold as yesterday, 5c at lunchtime. The Force 4 NNE wind bringing in a good rash showers off the North Sea. Managed to avoid the worst of them at lunchtime, and some sun in between.
  4. No rain today so far, in spite of 90% cloud cover. Fields and roads starting to dry out now, the chalk Wolds drain and dry quickly once the rain stops. A cold NE wind, force 5-6 made lunchtime bike ride quite a slog. Temps 3c, unchanged all day. A few breaks in the cloud, but generally dull. Too warm for snow here. The gaps in the clouds showed some nice crepuscular rays at lunchtime
  5. No rain today, so far... Cold but light winds, 3c first thing this morning 4c now, very little diurnal range. The coming week looks cold, but not cold enough for snow at our elevation near the coast.
  6. After some early drizzle no more rain, but raw and cold, 5c, but not snow cold. Hopefully we will have a longer dry spell which will allow the various floods to recede.
  7. Another dry day here so far, and one or two of the large 'ponds' are showing signs of reducing. Hopefully the dry spell will continue, but forecast is showing more rain overnight with an easterly setting in by the morning. Lunchtime brought SW winds force 3-4, temps at 8c and long sunny intervals, although its clouded over a bit now
  8. Not raining today, a plus. Winds light, W force 1-2 at lunchtime, and cloudy. Temps 8c. The water from this wet spell has left numerous spots inundated, field furrows are full of water and every ride out brings more mud back on clothes and bike. Here is one new 'pond', there is often standing water at this point, but never on this scale. Bear in mind we are on the chalk here, which tends to drain very quickly with very little or no open water under normal conditions.
  9. Yes, yellow warning area northwards extent is about right you are about 20 miles further south, and although we've had a wet day I doubt we have had 25mm
  10. Am I right in thinking that the Amber wind warning area on the MetO warning is too far North? Looking at the rain warning they seem to have that about right, we are right at the northern edge of the heaviest rain, its been a wet day but not excessive, but reports from just south of here indicate some significant accumulations. Impacts here are related to the fact that the last 3 months have been wet, just surface water.
  11. Well another miserable day on the Yorkshire Coast, yesterday was obviously a blip. Heavy overnight rain cleared but by mid morning we had persistent light rain which has got heavier. A lowering cloud base means its now misty here. At least its not windy (yet). Fields look even wetter than on my last ride. First day out on my bike this year, Winds very light, Force 1-2 SSE, all over grey with mist on the higher bits, light to medium rain, I got well wet. Temps 8c but feels colder with the rain and damp. This is the view looking towards the Wold Valley taken from near Grindale Airfield.
  12. Happy new year to everyone. A much better day today, sunny and light winds. I took the outside lights down today as I am back at work tomorrow. I had to use an old pallet under the ladders as they would just sink in to the waterlogged ground otherwise.
  13. An absolutely horrible day at the East Coast (again), blowing a gale and heavy rain. Plenty of surface water flooding. We really could do with a dry spell, and the incessant gales mean that I can't get on with a couple of outside jobs that need doing. Unfortunately yesterday was the one fine day, but we had to go out.
  14. Also visible in Bempton, missed them the other day, but I was in my shed this afternoon doing some woodwork, and I have a good view to the SW
  15. Just been for a walk along Sewerby cliff top, very windy, gusting close to 50mph I would guess, but sea is surprisingly calm as its an offshore gale
  16. Been the same here since Thursday, blowing a hooley again this afternoon Brid is showing 40mph+ gust, I suspect close to 50 here. Tomorrow's wind speed forecast has produced a yellow warning, this afternoon has been similar, but no warning. I struggle to make sense of the warnings, and I think the general public are getting to the point where they ignore them. They are trying to cram too much into 3 warning levels, with the 'Impact' being very subjective. Personally if a threshold is likely to be exceeded, with some indication of likelihood from 'possibility of' to 'will', then I think a warning should be issued.
  17. Managed to get out today and avoid the rain, wind already picking up. Force 5-7 SW at lunchtime and 9c, felt cold because of the wind, in spite of the milder temperatures. Tomorrows forecast is for gusts of 50mph+, that is beyond bike riding weather. Looking at the setup I think it may be worse than forecast as well. Yet again I am struggling to understand the general yellow warning, I had expected more of an update today. If the forecast 60mph+ gusts materialise east of the pennines that is going to have some serious impacts. Also a possible North Sea surge. I am firmly of the opinion that the Metoffice weather warnings do not convey to the public the required information. A low probability serious impact gets the same warning as a high probability low impact, but the required response to these two outcomes are totally different to my mind.
  18. A much milder day today, and quite a bit of sun. There have been some spectacular sunsets over the village over the last couple of days, here is tonights sunset, with the new crescent moon visible in the second picture.
  19. A better day today, wind reduced from yesterdays almost gale to a SW force 3-4, and sunny with very little cloud when I was out just after 12. Still cold at 5c.
  20. Another miserable cold grey day with frequent showers. At lunchtime wind was NNE force 5-6 gusting 7 at times, with temps of 5c felt cold, made worse by the frequent light showers. In the last hour there have been a few breaks in the cloud and sun is trying to shine through.
  21. Oh dear, yesterday was a blip, Rain earlier, and now fog today. Wind now light, mainly S and force 2. Very dull and temps of 8c.
  22. Well a much better day today for my bike ride, wind W force 3, and a funny bright yellow globe in an almost cloudless sky. Temperatures 7c. Normal route abandonded due to ongoing flooding. More rain is forecast for tomorrow, so we will see if its just a blip of nicer weather.
  23. Yes its a known trouble spot, apparently near Kirkstall Forge. As far as I can tell its surface runoff which accumulates in the lowest spot, which is the railway track.
  24. A better morning here, very windy last night, not sure what peak gust was. More rain in the forecast, any rain is now just going to run off. Anyone know what rainfall totals are so far this month in our area?
