  1. I love walking home in the dark; it's atmospheric and different to what you normally expect (coming back at 4/5 in daylight), and waking up in the dark can be a nag, but the skyline is so much better. Having a cup of tea at 630/7 in the morning when it's dark outside is just unreal. I appreciate the warmth and sunlight, but as soon as we hit August/September, the rapidly declining sunlight hours just completely shift my mood to wanting long, long nights. I wouldn't want to be cycling back from work like Botty at 4/5pm in darkness, so I see where he's coming from- so I guess I'll have to appreciate it now, because maybe later on in life I'll end up wanting sunlight until 9pm all year long...
  2. Sunny, warm with some scattered clouds, max 23c. Cooling, CAVOK, slightest westerly breeze, currently 16c.
  3. 16th birthday , what a glorious day. 23c w/ scattered clouds, boiling outside, and currently 16c and cooling w/ clear skies- first time I've not seen a single cloud since July!
  4. Tonight and tomorrow will provide a lot of interest, a slack south-westerly flow should provide some very warm daytime and nighttime temperatures, with cloud and sun, whilst the far north should see some rain and strong winds. Friday looks interesting and pretty active with an upper low nr Ireland, plenty of rain and cooler weather associated with it for the west, warm and cloudy across the south and east, and the far SE keeps retains the 15c 850 isotherm. By Sunday, a very intense low in the Bay of Biscay, associated with a ridging continental high pressure cell, leads to a very warm south-easterly flow, the continent providing what should be its last 'very hot' blast of air, with 15c 850s constantly lingering around eastern areas. Definitely the potential for some very warm temperatures after the brief interlude on Friday and Saturday. Definitely not benign and quite interesting to start of September. Could see 25-26c eclipsed across the SE in the next few days, and heavy rain and strong winds possible towards the weekend. Warm and dry across the east, more mixed and wetter to the west.
  5. Some broken clouds and very bright, 17c already- sharply rising as well. This September thing's good, isn't it?
  6. 2009-10 was very good. December 17 onwards, quite a bit of snow and temps below -5c at times. 10cms new snow overnight to start off the new year, which was superb; and then very cold on the nights following- only 34cms of snow lying at the peak of the spell, fantastic. February was also cold but not as snowy. 2010-11 I preferred. November 25-December 25 has to be the best 30 day period ever here in NE England. Top snow depth 42cms, lowest temperature imby was -12.2c, and this on low ground. January was average and February was mild, but the snow before Christmas made it worthwhile. 2011-12 was pretty horrible. Only December 16 and February 3/4 provided snow, and the depth didn't actually pass 1cm. Granted, some low temperatures early in February, and a very interesting December, but nothing special snow-wise. 2012-13 I enjoyed, but probably not as much as statistics would show. December was okay, not the best, quite mild at times, January was very cold, a couple of ice days, but the cloud made it pretty benign, despite a top snow depth of 15cms, there was intermittent snow spells, but low diurnal ranges and sleet at times spoiled that spell, which was good at times. February again was pretty cold, but March was better. Even in March, nothing to shout about here in the NE. In the last 30 years, at Durham University: coldest November (3.3c 1985, 1993) warmest November (8.7c 2011) coldest December (-0.3c 2010) warmest December (7.3c 1988) coldest January (0.7c 1987) warmest January (6.3c 1989, 2007) coldest February (-0.6c 1986) warmest February (7.6c 1998) coldest March (2.4c 2013) warmest March (8.2c 1990)
  7. Nov 10, Dec 10, Jan 10, Feb 08 November and December being cold and hopefully snowy is optimal, January as well, but towards mid-late Jan, I'm looking for warmth and sunshine again. Between Halloween and New Years Day is the main period that I'm interested during. Festivities and cold are a much better match than no festivities and longer days with cold- just doesn't feel as normal.
  8. On season lasts about 3-4 months here, sometimes less. We usually just wrap up more. No need for it until October/November really.
  9. Tuesday and Wednesday look relatively warm, got to be looking at 22c+ for most of southern Britain. Friday, on the other hand sees a cool north-east flow, a peculiar interruption in the upper flow and the subtropical HP cell ridges north- this highlighted well below
  10. Reminder that it's September today! Warmer week on the way, but the darker nights are becoming increasingly apparent.
  11. Temperature has stayed between 14.0c and 15.0c since 10am this morning, describes the day perfectly.
  12. Cool start, 9c low, currently 15c with high-medium cloud and a cool wind. Not very summery any more...
  13. 2007; I definitely feel as though something clicked; and since then, with a few exceptions, synoptics in the UK have followed a pretty apparent trend, and 2013 has seen a slight reversal of mass sea ice decline, summer synoptics and it's why I believe that perhaps it's either a notable blip, or a beginning in an opposite trend. I think the answer to the topic question is yes; but lots more research is needed.
  14. 2010's first 6 months finished at 7.1c here, 2013's provisionally at 6.4c, which is quite something. Though July was notably warmer this year, and it will be extremely difficult to near November and December, but it's likely to be very close, and 2013 will end up as one of the coolest of the last 20 years.
  15. 8c this morning, cooler than recent. Quite cool out there at 16c at the moment, feeling pretty autumnal.
  16. Not at all! It's not complete darkness for much, and in the summer, the long days would be bliss! I'd prefer an Alpine chalet, or a Scandinavian log cabin mind... but this looks good enough for now!
  17. At Durham University, the July results haven't came out yet, but June is provisionally at 13.4c, tied coolest with 2009 over the last 10 years. July was probably around 17-18c and August around average if not slightly above. Warmest summer months in the last 30 years at Durham (1984-2012) 1. July 2006 18.3c 2. August 1995 17.2c = August 1997 17.2c 4. August 1990 17.1c 5. July 1989 16.9c I feel as though there may well be a chance that July 2013 ends up as one of the warmest summer months ever here, and in the top 5 of the last 30 years. Coolest summer months in the last 30 years at Durham (1984-2012) 1. June 1991 11.3c 2. June 1985 11.4c = June 1987 11.4c 4. August 1986 12.3c 5. June 2012 12.4c No chance of any of the months entering the coolest months category, though I hadn't realised June 2012 had! On a whole, it's been a good summer, not the best, but probably better than any of them since 2006 (though 2010 was good as well), June was dull, July was hot and sunny, and August has been relatively sunny and about average. 7/10.
  18. LS has done so above- Iceland's higher hills are going to see a fair bit of sleet and snow overnight- will be a good look early tomorrow morning, before the melt on Sunday.
