  1. Good stuff. Interesting that the media were reporting a government 'rethink' yesterday on their Coastguard closure proposals... Although, quite why the Coastguard service in Scotland isn't devolved to the Scottish Parliament, and is still a Westminster decision, is a bit odd.
  2. I was staying in Todwick in South Yorkshire, last weekend, and whilst in the beer garden of the hotel there was a cuckoo nearby. Lovely to hear.
  3. The problem is of course that iphones are terrible phones (my husband has one and, quite unbelievably, loses signal in the city centre at various spots) and has a crap battery that barely lasts 8 hours. He describes it as the best gadget he's ever had but the worst phone.
  4. Liam on BBC News Channel keeps speaking about thunder again...
  5. Will be interesting to see what becomes of the storms heading up through southern Scotland. Will they dump over the Southern Uplands, and be a damp squib on arrival in the Lothians? Oh - the anticipation.
  6. Yep - come the European Monsoon, we'll all be wondering where the sunshine has gone.
  7. We'll get Paul or Karl to go give them a kick in a bit
  8. I must admit to be watching the medium range charts with some concern - and hoping the high progged to our north east from the weekend doesn't manoeuvre in such a way as to bring an easterly breeze. Because at this time of year that will mean one thing for Edinburgh and the east coast - HAAR
  9. 5.6ºC - cold second half that will annoy more people than it will delight others.
  10. Just a heads-up that with the end of winter approaching, the regional threads will be hibernating once again for the non-snowy seasons. Traffic levels on the site don't justify so many threads outside peak cold weather, and discussion simply gets diluted and the forum frankly looks a mess and reads badly. Perhaps now is the time to reintegrate discussion in the main forum threads as a precursor to this section being closed. It's been fun! Thanks
  11. Hi Ja23 I am finding out for you what is going on
  12. An ice day is a measure of air temperature at 2m - not surface temperature. Surface temperatures can frequently be below freezing, giving a grass or ground frost, whilst air temps can be say +3ºC. Hence the difference between grass/ground frosts and air frosts - the latter being the measure used for what is described as an 'ice day'
  13. The roll of distant thunder breaks, the afternoon of silence wakes They hurry through from Petergate as if they know this dance In fury blind, I drive at night across the moors, the open roads Beneath the freezing starry skies, racing in some trance These cities are illusions of some triumph over Nature's laws We've seen the iron carcass rust and buildings topple into dust And as the waters rise, it seems we cling to all the rootless things The Christian lies, technology, while spirits scream and sing Oh God I love the world Well I never said I was a clever man but I know enough to understand That the endless leaps and forward plans will someday have to cease You blind yourselves with comfort lies like lightning never strikes you twice And we laugh at your amazed surprise as the Ark begins to sink This temple that is built so well to separate us from ourselves Is a power grown beyond control, a will without a face And watching from outside I wish that I could wash my hands of this But we are locked together here, this bittersweet embrace Oh God I love the world And if one day the final fire explodes across the whitened sky I know you've said you'd rather die and make it over fast With courage from your bravest friends, waiting outside for the end With no bitterness but an innocence that I can't seem to grasp I know somehow I will survive - this fury just to stay alive So drunk with sickness, weak with pain, I can walk the hills one last time Scarred and smiling, dying slow, I'll scream to no one left at all I told you so, I told you so, I told you so . . Oh God I love the world NEW MODEL ARMY - I LOVE THE WORLD (1988)
  14. Just a quick post having looked this evening at these very interesting animations on model biases here: http://www.hpc.ncep....bias/index.html The 500 height errors/biases appear to show what is often said in the model discussion thread - that is that the GFS has a propensity to lower heights directly to our north and north west - e.g. favour Atlantic weather systems and this is the same for UKMET. But equally the same animations show how recently ECM over-eggs height rises to our east and north east. Quite pertinent tonight after the 12Z ECM.
  15. Yep - just going to nip this in the bud. This is the December CET thread not the "I want there to be a conspiracy to prove my point of view" thread. I won't remove the posts above on this nonsense, but will from now on. Plenty of opinion and space in the climate area here: http://forum.netweather.tv/forum/105-climate-and-environment/
  16. Nick Miller today with a good overview of the bigger picture, warning of 'back to deep mid winter'. Arctic air from Thursday and 'disruptive snow'. Monday - maxes widely of 4ºC, fog reluctant to clear Tuesday - maybe showery rain down east coast of England, fog and cloud elsewhere, still chilly Wednesday - maybe sleety stuff in south east as a pocket of colder air interacts with the front moving down the east coast of England Thursday - rain moving south, snow on back edge, then heavy snow in NI, western areas and maybe central southern England for a time. Maxes in Scotland by then of zero.
