  1. Thanks John!!I think ive been burnt too many times by these ramps, so for now im going to take it one step at a time and TRY not to get my self worked up about it. I will also observe the winter thread from a far and only dive in to comment every now and again. So, when was the earliest settling snow you can remember everyone? Mine must of been November 2010, because thats when I really started to get into weather and I can't really remember snow earlier than that in my lifetime, Christmas 2010 was my first white christmas also.I don't know if liking both Thunderstorms and Snow equally is a downfall or good thing? haha.
  2. My prediction for the first snow for the SE is for the 4th December over the Chilterns, hopefully I am wrong and we get it sooner. I see a lot of people getting excited, just don't get your hopes up yet as most of the runs are for 11 days away. With the St Judes storm there was a lot of speculation up until the night of when it was solidified, we may have to wait until the 21st to know how it will affect us. But be prepared if all of a sudden it takes a nose dive and we end up with the Atlantic dominating our weather once again.
  3. Evening all took a nice drive down to Southampton and back today to see a few people, temperature on the way back was 3c, now im at a reading of 0.3c frost has already started to form!Quick question can the dew point temperature go above the actual temperature or is the dew point limited by the actual temperature? as the dew point is currently sitting at 0.3c with a dew point of 0c.
  4. We had a large clap of thunder that startled me a bit, we have had 3 claps of thunder overall. Not bad!! I didn't even know it was coming.
  5. Probably won't be as bad as say an ef5 tornado for the sheer fact most of the wind gradually gets up to 195+ mph, with a tornado it can go from 0-200+mph in a few seconds. Actually scratch that as most of these places will be under the most intense winds for 2+ hours? so who knows? There will be so much devastation though, lets just hope it weakens as it gets closer to Cebu. With sustained winds of 195+ mph who knows what might occur?
  6. I cannot comprehend sustained winds of 200mph!! My brain is like 'nope, you are on your own with that one'
  7. Evening everyone!I thought I’d do some research on Guy Fawkes as I realised I only knew part of the history, I have totally gone in a different direction now though and I am currently looking at the 5th/6th centuries when the name England was first coined. I only took History up until I was 14, when I had to choose what subjects I would take for my GCSE's, stuff like that didn't really interest me up until now, as I am mainly a science orientated person. I will be watching other people’s fireworks from the warmth and comfort of my own home tonight, temperature is currently 9.6c so a tad chilly to be standing outside for extended periods of time.
  8. As much as I would like snow right now, the law of averages is currently against us!Its pretty cold tonight, I took my dogs out (They are jack russell/italian greyhound mix) for a walk around the munden earlier and It was freezing for me I cant imagine what it was like for them with there thin coats!
  9. It will start clouding up later tonight so not so sure on frost front.6.1c here right now, coldest evening here in a while.
  10. Morning all, work awaits me but having a quick scroll through some websites drew this to my attention:What would happen if all the ice melted in the world!http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/09/rising-seas/if-ice-melted-mapThe sea would raise 216ft, im 225ft ASL now so that would put me roughly 9 feet above sea level, Not sure if my house would survive as 9ft isn't that high depending upon how high, high tides go etc.
  11. Hopefully the low keeps going south!! Also look at this: Look at that for a change, thats from meteorologist Keith Marler for Fox 9 Twin Cities, Minnesota!! 10c to -7c difference in a month! Can you imagine that change here?
  12. My dad burnt some of his hair off when he used petrol once and he was almost hit with a firework from a cake that he was trying to light. My dad is prone to accidents though, he has fallen from 2 metres on to his back on to a 2 ton concrete block with large bolts in them which they use to test the overweight cut off switches on scissor lifts (my dad is a lift manufacture/engineer) he builds lifts for companies such as marks and Spencer, asda, Sainsbury’s etc (works as a contractor for easylift) and he was once working on a junction box when one of his colleague turned the mains on electrocuting him lucky his colleague turned the power straight off again, he had serious burns on his hands. That’s not the worst of it either, my dad had bone fragments explode into his face and mouth when one of the lifts failed sending it crashing down onto a man’s hand.
  13. Morning Mark and Morning everyone! Hope everyone has a good day, I know my day has started off well with a bacon and egg butty!
  14. Wow.... just wow.- - - - - - - - - - - - - -I hope this Atlantic dominance doesn't persist throughout winter.
  15. Still a while out though, still plenty of time for it to dissapear...... we hope.
  16. Where did you get them from? I like the way the temperature icons go up in 5s, I especially like Michael Fish in his should we say 'outdated suit' lol
  17. Thank you for the kind words Tamara! I think its enriching for people to have a different opinion to yours, just because its different doesn't mean they go agaisnt your own opinion. I just picked up lunch from my local chinese take away, Sweet chilli prawns with egg fried rice for £3,50 as a lunch special you can't go wrong really! What was a sunny morning has now turned into slate grey skies with a few dots of blue here and there, oh well.
  18. Whats the harm in trying though? My local council regularly cut the grass, trim the bushes and trim the trees back, if there is a tree that is threaterning to fall they will either trim it back or remove it completly we have had several trees removed from my area because they used to block the drains with the fallen leaves, causing flooding.Btw I would just like to let everyone know that I mean no offence to anybody and I am sorry in advance if you feel that way I am just trying to add to this debate.
  19. *sigh* I give up what is it with people wishing for destructive weather. Yes places like the US get hurricanes and snow storms but in this part of the world especially in our little corner events like that are pretty rare. I'm currently sitting in my lounge looking at a tree that is leaning very precariously right next to the power line. IF and I mean a big IF Sunday pans out like it is forecast at the moment I am concerned that they will fall. Why would anybody wish to have that happen. Nobody wants trees to land on power lines or people to die, you are responsible for your own safety why not call up your local council and see if they will come out and either trim the tree back or remove it completely. Even call up your electricity company and see what they can do. If people took action when they saw something there probably wouldn’t be as many accidents and disruption during these events.
  20. I agree but 'how much is too much' I guess is perspective, in some places 15/20cm is a light dusting by their standards. Places in the US get over 100+ inches a year (I am not too sure about other places around the globe but this is just an example), it’s the same with any type of weather really. Even in the UK 15cm of snow 'can' causes’ chaos, the people that tend to die (most of the time) in adverse weather are people who do not take the proper precautions. James Spann summed it up really well, he said that the people who are interested in weather are the ones that survive and the ones that arn't are the ones that are killed. I think it’s a case of awareness, if you take the proper precautions why can't you enjoy the extreme weather? It's not like you can change the outcome, so why not? I cannot hold myself responsible for something I can't change but I can make sure I am as safe as possible and so should other people. The only problem is how do you get to those people who may not pay attention to weather warnings or who take unnecessary risks? That includes companies, making sure they have infrastructure in place to cope. Fun isn't necessarily in the equation for me it’s more about how belittling the earth can be and how humbling such raw power is.
  21. I can't believe the Express can print such drivel, are there no laws against inciting moral panic?Even 40mph winds could send trees toppling after St Judes Storm weakened them.
