Thanks @Stormyking. I expect it comes down to whether the weather stations use a Stevenson screen and are situated far enough away from surrounding buildings and vegetation.

I’ve long wondered why the Met Office only put one of theirs on that southern tip of the island. It more or less has a separate climate to mainland England, for example it’s nearly always the coolest spot in the Southeast region in summer and mildest spot in winter.

Y’know what, it must be there to make those elsewhere feel better about their local climate .

I know what you mean, which surprises to me why they never put any stations anywhere else on the island, as its such a diverse place with temperatures. There are so many massive hills, valleys, massive countryside. And then you have places like Newport and Ryde that are more built up and has a similar sorta feel to mainland England.

One of the reasons we started up Isle of Wight met service, was so we can forecast the island as a whole because of how hard it actually is to forecast the islands weather as a whole. I guess we just got fed up seeing BBC weather forecasts and met offices having like 30+'c in summer heat, or below freezing in winter across all of Southern England, but yet would always have the Island showing 3 or 4'c higher than anywhere else. But so so so many times most of the island would be at the exact same temperature as most of mainland England sometimes colder or hotter. The areas on the island that would have temperature's being milder during winter and cooler during the summer, is normally due to the wind direction. Say if there is a SW or S Wind in a hot summer spells, the far South and West Coast will always be cooler, but then go inland and towards Eastern parts, temperature's would be much higher. St Catherine's is in one of those areas where it is prone to most win directions, straight off the sea too.

So yeah I think your right, set up the station in the worst most boring spot on the island, no wander they always get our weather wrong

    Anyway still 25.4 here

Thanks for the update @Stormyking. Can any of those qualify as an official reading in the eyes of the Met Office? At least the one run by the Isle Of Wight Met Service...?

That’d be a UK max for today and one over 35 to boot (could be significant if Mon-Wed all make it to 35+ somewhere).

Im not entirely sure which ones are to be honest, but I know they report to Met office WOW. Also the Lake one is a Vantage pro 2 station and is set up properly too :).

I know the one official one they do have on the island, is at St Catherine's lighthouse, which is in a really exposed area though.

Really is exceptional this heat the last few days so far, sleeping is hard though

  3. Today has really been quite an incredible day on the Island, a few areas on the island might of even had there highest ever temperature's recorded locally, including my location. Here is a top 5 list and a map of all the islands temperature's from Today. 2 of the stations that were showing 36'c, one is ran by us the Isle of Wight Met Service, and the other is a different station very close which isn't ours. Even right now the Temperature has gone back up to 27.4'c after being 26.1 about half an hour ago.

Here we have the top 5 list for the main areas on the island it self

Here is the map of all the the stations on the island

For a time the winds were E to ESE, then suddenly they turned South, causing a mad FOHN effect and a sudden rise in temperature as all the hot air sunk down off of Shanklin downs.

Great shots there... I can always add some lightning to them

Been to the Sandown/Shanklin area quite a few times in past years and witnessed some great summer storms on the Isle Of Wight. One night sat in the car on Ventnor sea front was unreal with bolt after bolt of lightning

    Thanks mate apprciate the comment

I do feel quite lucky to live in a place is so many insane views across all directions, Culver Downs, Brading Downs and Ventnor Downs are our go too spots normally, it really helps being a photographer too. I got this Photo from last July of some crazy storms, this hugeee Posi strike made my eyes water haha

Fingers crossed for some good action later, could be potential anywhere along South Coast Tonight!

  6. Evening all

Observations: A mostly fine day Today with more sunshine but also some cloudy periods at times, these are in the form of Stratocumulus but also some Cumulus from dying showers from the North East, which we managed to get a very very very light shower but was way too light to tell what it was trying to fall and it didn't accumulate. The wind Today however certainly feels cold and is quite strong too.
Some nice sunshine at the moment, though some Cumulus and Stratocumulus still drifting over at times, still feeling really quite chilly with a continuous Fresh-Strong North East wind mostly.

  7. Afternoon all, couldn't do my daily post yesterday as had some issues with the internet. Anyway we recorded our warmest day yesterday with a Max of 15.0'c at 16:12pm, was a lovely yesterday though with wall to wall sunshine and lighter winds.

Today, a lot more cloud around, especially this Morning and up until about midday. The sun has come out more though during the Afternoon, though still with a lot of cloud at times, mainly in the form of Stratocumulus. The Wind has also picked up a little more this Afternoon too.

Jeepers, after what feels like an eternity of rainfall, these recent Rh figures are amazing, currently 32 % after a low of 29%, that's lower than Phoenix in Arizona (where it is damn dry I know) which is at 39%....

It is actually pretty crazy, we just had Humidity peak down to 22%! I think that the lowest or one of the lowest I have seen it! It is back up to 33% now.

The air just feels so clean and the sky look so clean too

  9. Afternoon all,

It has been another lovely day here and also feeling slightly warmer Today due to a lighter wind, still feels a tad on the chilly side on the very far East coast when exposed to the light to moderate wind. A line of cirrus has moved in the last hour and a half though, sun still shining! We were just 0.1'c from equalling our warmest day of the year, with it peaking at 12.7 so far and our highest is 12.8 which was on the 8th February. Temperatures rising a little though again the last 10 minutes, back up to 12.5'c. Actually no as I type this we have just hit 12.9 now it is the warmest day wheeyyy!! What is noticeable, the Dew points are excessively low!

Local conditions at 16:29pm                                             Today's Highs and Lows

    Temperature: 12.9                                                             High Temperature: 12.9'c ( 6:29pm)  Low Temperature 1.7'c (05:44am)
Dew Point: -6.1                                                             High Dewpoint: 3.9'c  Low Dewpoint -6.1'c
Windchill: 11.4                                                                   High Humidity: 74%  Low Humidity 26%
Humidity: 26%!                                                                  Highest Wind Gust and Average Direction: 21mph (11:24am) East
Wind speed and Direction: 17mph From ENE                  High Pressure: 1022.3mb  Low Pressure 1020.3mb
    Pressure: 1020.4                                                               Rainfall Today: 0.0mm

Couple of shots to go with Today's Weather, just as the cirrus was moving in. Oh and make that 13.1'c just reached, Temperature has shot up a bit, but Dew points have fallen dramatically

  10. Hi all, haven't posted for a while due to personal issues, ongoing bad mental issues and constant struggling with my stomach. Anyway feel in a bit a of better place recently, so thought it would be a good time to stay around and post more.

Anyway onto the weather, Today's observations: A glorious day with unbroken sunshine through out, which has been the case for the last few days. On the chilly side down here though due to a constant pretty raw feeling ESE Wind coming in right off the sea, it does vary from SE at times though. I haven't seen a single cloud Today at all.

  11. What a fun week this has been so far, especially yesterday and last night. Started with some real heavy downpours during yesterday Morning with some awesome cloud structures and rotation, looked as though a small funnel was trying to develop but never quite got there. The Afternoon became quiet for a time but still with some great looking cumulus which I could tell even at that point there was really strong shear, it wasn't long before the next wave of showers came in. This wave started around 5pm. I was watching this shower developing and getting stronger and stronger to my South approaching directly overhead. From where I was looking it went visible to no visibility as I could rain had turned torrential getting very close. This shower I got a couple of photos and footage of because it was such a beautiful shower despite no lightning at this point. The winds became very strong and was blowing from directions and I experienced some of the heaviest rain I've seen, including an incredible Rainbow right in front of my eyes. Im pretty confident it was a micro burst.

After this it went quite for a few hours before yet another line of showers which some turned in storms edging closer and closer, North West of the island had a fair few decent strikes but was out of my view. It looked this lot wasn't gonna quite do it for my part, was about to go to bed until I heard a big crack of Thunder, went to look and seen another 3 close strikes 2 CG 1 CC with loud Thunder.

EDIT: Crazy crazy showers here right we just had a proper decent little storm, 5/6 flashed with lots of loud rumbles! Just had some mad Hail too

These photos and videos are from the Evening shower. ( Excuse the talking)

  12. Good Afternoon

Weather observations since yesterdays report: Some Sunny spells for a time during yesterday Afternoon, but cloud soon came back in and was thick enough to give the odd light shower at times during late Afternoon and early Evening. As we moved in dark, most of the cloud broke up to allow some clearer skies for a time. This didn't last as more thicker cloud moved in with a front, this gave some more showery rain at times by the early hours. This Morning started mostly cloudy with the odd shower still but this quick cleared and some sunny spells developed again. By mid Morning it was quite nice which lasted through the Afternoonn, though has been quite a blustery day too. Went to Priory Bay which is near Bembridge on the far East Coast of the Island, it was absolutely lush round there, with a big wall of trees and woodland behind the Beach blocked the wind.

Current: Back home in Sandown now and its sunny with some patch high cloud and cumulus at times, still quite blustery though here.

    Temperature's: Currently 19.8'c       Yesterday's High: 24.1'c      Today's High: 20.6'c     Overnight Low: 16.8'c

  13. Good Afternoon

Weather Observations since my last report: Well I can't remember what it did the night before last as I fell asleep . Anyway, woke up yesterday to mostly cloud skies with the odd brighter interval. As the day went on the cloud became thicker, though it did feel warm and humid! By mid to late Afternoon the cloud became thick enough to give a few showers as a line moved up from the South West the spots were very big as well. To be honest I was very surprised we even got any precipitation yesterday as it really wasn't expected for our area! There were some cool looking structures as the line of showers approached with some cool Alto-cumulus which I have a photo of. The cloud bases were very high and most of the rain evaporated before it even reached the ground. This cleared through to the leave a dry and fairly warm Evening with very light winds. Skies became clearer for a time before the cloud thickened up and moved back in during the Night.

Today and Current: A very cloudy start to the day but quite a humid feel again, a little clear slot I could see moving in on sat24 has just come over us so we have a brief spell of some blue sky and sunshine, there is some mid level convection though.

    Weather data:

Temperature:  Current: 23.3'c         Yesterday's High: 21.2'c    Overnight Low Last night: 15.5'c

    Humidity: 64%      Yesterday's High Humidity: 93%     Yesterday's Low Humidity: 70%

Rainfall since my last report: 0.02mm

Wind: WSW 7.4mph  Gusting at 12.8mph         Highest Gust Yesterday: 12.8mph       Dominant direction: SE

First photo is from yesterday Afternoon as the showers were arriving, other 2 are current, apologies for the angle on the the last one.

  14. Been slacking with the old reports due to a lot of work. Anyways im back to it.

Weather Observations Today: A very warm day with plenty of sunshine though there was some cloud at times. Winds have also been very light today which helped with the temperatures. Winds picked up a touch as we got towards the Evening but it still felt really pleasant.
