  1. Almost makes me wish I'd headed down the M74 and gone out on the hills today, although I dare say skis are better than boots for getting through the current level of snow cover. There's pretty good cover in most of north Lanarkshire - had a wander through some moors and woods:
  2. Was pleasantly surprised to find a fresh covering this morning - only 2cm. or so but didn't expect anything from the north and things look crisper and fresher again.
  3. Had a wee wander along the Double Craigs above Fintry today. Just enough snow to make it feel wintry without having to plough through knee or thigh-deep drifts - not that I'd have complained if there had been deep snow, mind you. On the plateau above, there was some moderate drifting but poor visibility as cloud closed in, unfortunately. I was slightly surprised on the way back to find quite a bit of melting on this south-facing slope.
  4. Interesting post from Ian Fergusson on the model thread about snow potential on Tuesday. Mind you, the devil is in the detail as he says. As we all know, the snow could possibly end up in an entirely different part of the British Isles! Great to see this. I had my doubts when I learned a ski tow was being installed at Lowther! I know how quickly the snow can disappear there.
  5. Met Office forecasts for west central Scotland seem to have upgraded to heavy snow this evening - could be fun!
  6. Still coming thick and fast here. Traffic jamming up as everyone decides to leave early!
  7. Yes, accumulating quickly - looking much whiter than 10 minutes ago.
  8. EK taking a direct hit from a heavy shower at the moment.
  9. It's a devolution thing. This particular regime of cold weather warnings only applies to England (I think).
  10. Another snow shower in EK too, adding to the wee covering from earlier.
  11. I was always curious that there is an area of hillside on the west side of West Lomond named on the 1:25000 map as 'Wind and Weather' - now I know why!
  12. A bit of a sleet/wet snow blizzard in EK at the moment, at just over 150m asl.
  13. An impressive photo (nicked from the WInterHighland forum) of 40-odd centimetes of snow in Aviemore this morning. http://www.winterhighland.info/forum/file.php?2,file=10267
  14. Still decent snow cover in this part of EK. This morning's band definitely added a bit to the (shallow, but still rather nice) cover in the Motherwell/Hamilton area this morning.
  15. I often feel like that in North Lanarkshire in winter, but places on the coast need an even bigger miracle!
  16. Snow quite heavy again here too.
  17. Has just about stopped here but a decent wee covering - hopefully the base for a bit more through the night! Snowing in Glasgow city centre and all the way out the motorway - not really lying in Glasgow and the lowest bits of the motorway though.
  18. The heavy ppn shown on the radar looks as though its beginning to move round to the north of Glasgow, dammit!
  19. The MetO's matrix for warnings is based on both severity of the weather and the impact (which is deemed to be greater in heavily populated areas, etc). but I do feel that they need to make some adjustments to the weighting of these factors as the current warnings system isn't getting it quite right, particularly for rural and highland areas.
  20. That's my gut feeling too, but we'll see soon enough, I suppose.
  21. My excuse for not ramping is "Snowfall amounts will probably vary substantially across the amber area, and there is the likelihood that some places will see very little settling snow." Seriously though, am trying to decide whether to drive into Glasgow after work as planned, about 5.30-6pm, or just go home in case there's a repeat of anything approaching the December 2010 incident.
  22. Slight snow cover in East Kilbride, but have more or less given up on anything decent in Motherwell - largely graupel and sleet/wet snow there.
  23. Hailstones and a biting wind here too.
  24. The pessimist in me reckons the main event on Tuesday evening will miss to the north of Lanarkshire as per the charts on Lomond's post above, but we'll just have to wait and see, I guess!
  25. I see there was some ski-ing at Leadhills yesterday, but I imagine most skiers would be looking for a bit of respite from the gales for a while.
