  1. Only managed a cm or 2 here but nice all the same. Been trying to see if there is any hope for us before this winter ends (not that it really began) Had a look at Joe B's Saturday summary again and took it through to the last couple of minutes. He and his colleagues seem pretty confident that in view of future expected set ups over there which appear to be falling into place, that a ridge will be pumped up over Greenland after the second half of the month. Didn't go any further after that but a Greenland high for us is usually good news? They have been pretty successful with their winter forecasting this year so perhaps our winter isn't over just yet? Not very good at understanding all that he talks about but will include the link to his summary again so you can have a look. Most of it is concerning their own weather outlook until the end when he touches on the expected NH set up.

. Ignore the beginning because he is wittering on about a disagreement he had on TV with someone

Netweather's own February forecast is also going for Greenland HP towards the end of the month.

  2. Best Winter here since 2010/11. Absolutely brilliant December and January with two notable severe gale events, 16 days with snow on the ground, lost count of the air/ground frosts number.

Another week of cold weather ahead with a good chance of another few cm's tomorrow night - heading up to the Cairngorms for a bit of boarding next weekend - Scottish Winter in all its glory from home to the Highlands!

    COME ON ANDY!!!!!!!!

Aye, snow cover is surviving well in rural South Lanarkshire.  Nearly all gone here.

Turned down an offer of a trip north today in favour of a 'short' local-ish walk in the Lowther Hills, but it was such a nice day I just kept on going!

  3. I'm going to Aviemore on Tuesday, hoping for lots of snow! Can anybody tell me what conditions are like? Looks like a fair bit more snow to fall over the coming days as well - Hope I can get there! :)

Not as much snow as further west, I think, but still decent.

WinterHighland is your best bet generally- it has links to various webcams and summaries of ski conditions.

    Aviemore webcam is here:

    Cairngorm webcams here:

General summary of the current position and expected current conditions in the ski areas is here:

SAIS Northern Cairngorms blog might also be useful:

  4. The Met O now seems to be stressing snow more in its forecast for this evening.

It has another yellow warning out, and says

"a small area of low pressure is expected to move southeastwards and bring a more persistent spell of rain, sleet and snow to parts of western Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Midlands."

    Polar Low?

  5. EK now a whiteout with heavy snowfall.

Yep, a decent cover built up quite quickly in that last shower.

How are the roads? I am heading to EK soon for work.

Very light covering of snow in EK at the moment, but could be more showers incoming.

  6. Heavy sleet shower in Motherwell at 3C, becoming more snow-like on the drive up to East Kilbride where the temperature was showing as 0.5C on the car thermometer during the shower.  Some cars coming up the M74 with snow on them too.  Seems reasonably promising for later.

  7. I've started a thread about the cold snowy period of late Jan 96 and early Feb 96 which includes mention of the event you talk about. It was a classic battleground situation with the cold air winning out. It was very much a 'west' event, with Dumfries and Galloway, Cumbria, coastal parts of NW Eng, N Wales hit hardest - the snow didn't make much further inroads than the west midlands and Pennines, had it hit a more populous part of the country it would not doubt get much more mention than it does. I've said it many a time, but for here it was easily one of the greatest snowfalls of the 20th century.

There was quite a lot of snow from that event in the Glasgow area - enough for schools and workplaces to close early and the usual transport issues, but nothing too extreme (although I never went onto the high ground in those days!).  Certainly one of the better snowfalls of the 90s in lower-lying parts of western Scotland though.

  8. Does anyone agree that there is snow potential for Friday evening and into Saturday. I realise it will be short lived but it would still be good. It's not really being suggested on the usual sites but on the models it shows potential. The good thing is the mountain forecast for next week looks below freezing at Munro level.

Not sure how severe the thaw will be - MWIS has freezing level above the summits on Sunday.

  9. The Salsburgh Road? Literally 5 minutes away from me, I look out my bedroom window onto fields and farms and its always nice to see the fields with a good covering, the stuff on the road has melted due to being gritted a few times but cover remains a couple of inches deep everywhere else. It's a nice view from there

Well spotted!  Probably not high-ranking in the tourist guides to Scotland but it all looks nice under snow.
