Storms and Convective discussion - June 2023
terryall replied to Supacell's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Well, things have arrived with a bang in Whitstable plus heavy rain as well. -
Forecasts for tomorrow morning don’t seem great for travel. I have a car full of children going from Whitstable to Hertfordshire but I’m not sure if snow, rain, ice or heavy winds are forecast as depends what you look at. Any ideas of what we can expect from a mainly M25 journey from South to North? Thanks.

One of my daughters lives in Amsterdam and they are under a red warning. All the city closed down at 3pm. -

Just a quick memory of 1987. I was due to play golf that day and woke up when it was dark and got ready to go. It was dark outside but extremely windy at around 6am and I saw a few bins flying down the road. However, nothing stops a mental golfer so I set off around the South Circular and M25 towards Herts. Luton vans and some lorries had been blown over but I carried on until reaching said golf course in Herts. the secretary came out in his dressing gown and said “ what rate you doing here?’”. Ive come to play golf said I. You must be mad he said, we have fallen trees on the course as well as dead deer! Oh! Said I and left to go home. Later, I found out the TV crews were in my street as 100 yards away 27 trees had been blown over in the street and completely blocked the road but I never saw this as went the other way in the dark. Never say a golfer is not dedicated but more probably slightly unhinged….. -

If you run the radar through from about an hour ago you see the snow showers approach Whitstable and then split to go around it. Just like pigeons do if you are in a field and they fly towards you - but never overhead! -

“Heaviest streams currently, red bringing worse conditions towards the far east Ramsgate/Margate” explains why Whitstable is getting almost nothing. -

I’m just east of Sheppey in Whitstable and just tiny flakes in a strong wind. Nowhere near what I was expecting but plenty of time left for improvement. -

Snow for Whitstable from Sunday to Wednesday is unheard of! If this comes off it will be memorable for this part of Kent as we almost always miss out. My 2 yr old grandson will see his first snow and I’ll get to make my first snowman in around 20 years! -

I was a kid in 62/63 and remember the snow very well. I lived not far from Tom SE12 back then in Charlton and we had snow piled up against the back door to about 3 or 4 foot. Our school never closed and, eventually, we were told not to throw snow balls as some were like packed ice and very hard. We still got thrown out of the class at playtime so we just slipped our way around and kept falling over. Great fun. -

Heavy rain in Whitstable and I’m just about surrounded by water now. The ground is already saturated so this doesn’t help. I never understand why workers like roofers, ground workers etc don’t wear wet weather gear. They all seem to wear hoodie types tops and get soaked. Weird. -

I suspect Whitstable will struggle for any snow being on the coast. Might have to go shopping in Canterbury later ( only joking). -

I can officially report white dandruff falling at Whitstable. Probably 0.005 on the SM scale. -

Around here at Whitstable there’s more chance of flooding than anything else. Now had 2 solid days of rain to add to all the other wet days so all that water drains down the hill behind me and into our garden on its way to the beach. Never seen it so wet but the good thing is I have many free duck ponds!
