  1. Aircraft would use a lot of fuel heading into the Jetstream+storm I'd expect.... Talking of fuel today's storm is super fueled, I can only say that everywhere is at risk of affects from this big storm in one way or another, and affecting on Tue too.
  2. Last year Christmas morning had one spectacular TSM during dark hours, quite unusual for time of year.
  3. Breaking news... http://news.sky.com/ - storm now gone top story on sky
  4. Nice looking satellite image of developments over the Atlantic:
  5. http://www.xcweather.co.uk/forecast/Heathrow - showing almost 70mph gusts at Heathrow during the storm
  6. Good piece of advice. And as there is such saturated/wet ground and with more heavy rain to come those trees are now as at high risk of falling as the events we had during in past weeks with the full leaf trees (should say an added risk and so a higher risk of tree fall because of very wet ground)
  7. Worrying times... never or lets say do not remember such severely active prolonged stormy weather, starting to wonder what is going on in the atmosphere and that, don't rename the DAT movie as the DATODAY.. sure you can work out what this is! but can we imagine if suddenly there's a top meeting about something has been set off and this is the start.... OK back to reality cup of coffee!
  8. Some quite severe convective gusts blowing across my area (Stanwell) this associated with the heavy rain band, down towards Portsmouth area particularly intense cells that are thundery, looking at lightning strike radar one has appeared over Fareham area Hampshire.
  9. I think mentioning the sustained winds across southern areas would be something of interest too, 30-40mph continuous wind? imagine this with gusts up to 70mph or more Mon and into Tue, not to mention the prolonged nature of the severe storm. worrying that the fuel that fueled the previous storms is still playing up, theres one big bash coming up and possibly the worst so far (hope not but this is real and is possible) Don't remember so many storms in such a space of time like this, there just following each other, but this is what the jet stream can do, but not really usual as far as I see it, not normal for any month? really amazing. Same for north but just highlighting south as not get many big storms down here!
  10. Look away now if you don't like stormy weather... This is for Monday afternoon, 60KTS-65KTS heading into S-UK this is 75mph gusts during the daytime quite a concern, these charts are a guide and some gusts could be a little higher than this: Tuesday and over 70KTS that's 80mph hitting west side of Scotland: Even the deep oranges are at least 60mph
  11. This was the chart indicating a Jet streak over N-Ireland / Scotland Friday on GFS run 12z(first chart) This is heading in for Monday.... Power Jet stream to hit next week. be prepared for this big storm and it's firing into S-UK too Looks amazing! and here on chart above this is the back edge cold plunge of the big storm for Mon/Tue indicated on GFS (these are not surface temps but Thickness 500/1000hpa) Data GFS 18z
  12. Yep massive bolt of lightning lit up my flat (had low indoor light) boom of thunder at the same time as torrential rain and possibly hail.
  13. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/surface-pressure/#?tab=surfacePressureColour&fcTime=1387756800 Met Office FAX charts (surface pressure charts) Can only really say one word and that is Stormy at times and very wet with flooding.
  14. Great! can't have moving things while reading (this quite gentle though) but it's absolutely flash! nice design, and as always this site has brilliant web design!
  15. Looks as though there could be snowfall today as cold air blasts south through daytime getting to the far south during the evening time, the wind storm affected many areas yesterday and is still affecting the parts of the north now is dragging down a cold pool as it moves away later, this brings with it the threat of snowfall, and for some, there is likely to be accumulations of snow. Looking through the data it looks as though Scotland most at risk of heavy snow with large accumulations over the high ground and snow settling to low levels at times too. Trough features/shower bands moving through and with low pressure staying quite deep to our far north along with the much colder air then this bringing sleet/snow showers across many areas at some point over the next 24hrs (possibly hail showers too) Some prolonged snowfall over the west and north of Scotland with significant disruption from the snow. Other quite strong snow signals are for northern Ireland, south Wales, northwest England, the Midlands also has some snow signal on the charts for example. But also other areas to as I mentioned above many areas at risk. Risk of snowfall over central Scotland and possibly some getting further east. The south is at risk from high hill snow as showers sweep in here especially during the evening and possibly to low level as much colder air moves in. Here is the GFS 18z Thickness 500/1000hpa at 1800hrs: This shows the cold plunge well as it moves southeastwards. So to finish of this post the snow starts in the northwest today this risk extending south with the cold air by the evening. I must emphasize this is looking like a big snow event for parts of Scotland. ESS
  16. I use the most common words and that is squall line! some on here get to techy!. I see it as a thin but intense line of precipitation with gusts squally winds associated with it
  17. It arriving - squall line! (circled area most interesting) http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/observations/city-of-london-greater-london#?tab=map&map=Rainfall&locId=350928&zoom=7&lon=-1.61&lat=52.26&fcTime=1387360800
  18. If you not seen it yet the Met Office have AMBER WARNINGS FOR WIND check these here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=warnings&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1387324800
  19. Look at this....(circled) Note it shows the observation here is 20:00hrs.
  20. Can't find the cold spell thread?? not a ramp being real have you seen the charts look!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This Thursday! look at the lines and numbers, still low pressure+cold air sweeping in behind the storm= you guessed it!
  21. Winter Storm Wednesday (today) affecting all areas, lasting into Thursday early hours for far north Torrential rainfall and floods, damaging winds, and a snow risk for north - Gales picking up through the day especially on Western and Southern coasts, and moving inland through the day especially evening time, and by early evening (possibly afternoon) severe and potentially damaging storm force winds/gusts of up to 80mph hitting West of Ireland (and possibly the southwest of Ireland too) the coastal areas really getting a hard pounding from the wind and waves, the severe gales/storm force winds sweeping into northern Ireland, and later in afternoon into evening gales picking up to severe gales into the southwest and southern England coastal, and West Wales hitting 60-70mph, inland gusts up to 55mph. severe gales through channel starting in the West Channel moving east through the evening , severe gales up the Irish sea, to the north channel, and gales affecting East coast could become severe later in the evening but these are mostly indicated to affect over the North-sea. Gales likely to affect England and Wales through the evening. Evening / late evening storm force winds battering West Scotland possibly damaging winds, and high waves causing problems here. into the evening and into the night period the storm moving over Scotland with the winds affecting west and north of Scotland the most severe, these winds hitting Shetland/northern Isles too. Have done a map to show areas indicated most at risk. Everywhere is at risk from gales or severe gales through today and tonight I'm going to put the rainfall charts in the" Heavy rain watch part II" thread you can find in this section. Such a busy week of weather and so much to put in forecast but have to draw a line somewhere!! ESS
