First report from my new location and it’s not a happy one. Wet, cold and miserable about sums it up. I don’t have my weather station set up yet so no figures to go with that but it was 3c when I left for work and 7c when I got home. West Lomond had snow and East Lomond didn’t so locally the snow level was just above 400m.

Morning all, Ive not been online in a couple of weeks because I have been busy moving house! After 15 years of coastal living in the East Neuk and another 4 in Broughty Ferry I’m a coastie no longer. Now in Glenrothes. So a little wetter, colder in winter and warmer in summer. Less haar. And of course better snow prospects. While I wouldn’t consider Glenrothes a mecca for snow, it is compared to Pittenweem and I should be posting snow pics more regularly (my last were Feb 21!). I also have the Lomonds on my doorstep!

Well that’s a wrap on meteorological winter. My brief local wintry summary: 11 air frosts (4 Dec, 5 Jan, 2 Feb) 1 ice day No lying snow Nothing too surprising for my mild location. What’s been more notable is that on the back of a very wet October and November, it’s been a dreary 5 months of wind and rain. Certainly the most protracted spell of poor weather since I moved here in 2005.

Dull, drizzly and dreich, 5.5c I’m ready to raise the white flag and accept another snowless winter. I think the fact that October-December was so unusually and relentlessly wet over here has made it feel like a long, unpleasant slog with no pay off. Spring, anyone? There’s been a real north-south divide. I think if I lived somewhere like Orkney I’d be saying this winter has delivered in style. But central belt southwards, a real disappointment (thus far).

Time to roll out the old wetbaw calculator, I feel: Wet Bulb Calculator (omnicalculator.com) If you know your air temperature and relative humidity you are good to go. For example if it's snowing with an air temp of 2c and Rel Hum of 80% = Wetbaw of +0.2c. You need it below 0c to see meaningful accumulation. Here in Pittenweem it's currently 4.5c with 70% humidity = wetbaw of +1.8c. That's as low as the temperature will go with evaporative cooling so no prospect of accumulating snow unless the measurements change!

Ross B the warning does stress that accumulations will mainly be across higher ground (>300m). I'm struggling to see anything more than temporary slushy deposits for most at low levels through the central belt. Happy to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable of course! Temperature up to 2c here now after the chilly start.

Great post @Hairy Celt First air frost since January 18th this morning, low was -2.5c. -6c up the road at more sheltered Leuchars. Confident we won’t see any accumulating snow here, not with a strong onshore easterly. The latest Met Office forecast backs this up with the usual ‘away from the immediate coast’ caveat.
