  1. Wind is just picking up here but no rain as yet - radar suggests that cloud is dispersing rapidly
  2. wind eased for a while here despite pressure continuing to drop, but it has now picked up again to full gale, not howling though. Normally we get the strongest wind when the rate of change of air pressure alters (ie on the turn from falling pressure to flat or rising pressure). That point has not yet been reached so I expect stronger wind to follow. Interesting that it is relatively calm not so very far North of here and also in Barnstable
  3. rain has just eased a bit and wind has picked up with a sudden squall, probably force six. Pressure had been gently rising but has started to drop again over the past hour and now dropping sharply. Barograph is not calibrated so will leave to others to determine lowest pressure reached. (Puddletown just east of Dorchester, we are in the lee of a gentle hill so reasonably protected from S and W winds )
  4. Not sure the sea spray will reach you Illminster, but in 1990 you could taste it on your lips in Dorchester at lunch time, 12+ miles from Chesil beach! (and no that wasn't after a bag of crisps)
  5. If so arrive early and see the Carrivick Sisters playing at the Square and Compasses tonight!
  6. From the car park at the top of the hill you get the panoramic view over Chesil, from car parks at Easton and Southwell there will be dramatic views of seas breaking over the Shambles Banks to the East and from the car park at Portland Bill you do start to get a bit hairy - in Jan 90 I had to crouch sheltering behind a low wall in full waterproofs, taking real care to keep my footing!
  7. Karlos, surely Portland Bill has to be the place (I went there for the Burns Night Storm, simply awesome) the added plus being the drive through spray off Chesil on the way to Portland. Just rinse the car off afterwards!
  8. Yes it is quite unusual for an amber warning so far out which makes me think Meto feel there is a real probability of disruptive wind. If you look at the GEFS sea level pressure and windspeed charts there is a trough developing on the bottom edge of the main depression with a pronounced hook - a sting for the South Coast. Peak windspeed prediction at present looks like a gust of 56mph but I suspect that could change if this little fella continues to grow in stature. Look at how it develops from 00:00 Monday onwards The other aspect is timing - such preparations as can be made before the event are best organised today and implemented tomorrow before most people head off for the weekend. So I would say 'well done Meto' irrespective of what finally transpires. The good news is that tides will be neaps so flood risk lower than with springs.
  9. A bit harsh? If I were to make an observation on the model runs and how future model runs in FI might develop, I would not argue with MR. A week or two back the unsettled spell looked brief indeed, but as so often happens the changes keep getting delayed and allow a continuation of the current pattern. Tamara's observation re shift of PV however is also worth watching to see if it triggers the shift in jetstream required to usher in drier, colder weather. A most interesting period for model watching. Time to wind up the old barograph and put a new paper in it!
  10. Meto have issued alerts for Thursday and Friday also (Devon/Cornwall) so that will be heavy rain for 6 out of 7 days. Nature has its ways of catching up!
  11. Mapantz Interesting that Purbecks didn't get much rain today (I got a soaking walking up from Durdle Door yesterday so maybe that was your turn!) We had quite heavy rain this morning N of Dorchester but I have not measured it. In excess of 6mm I suspect, not a huge amount but resulted in standing water on the roads in a number of places. Just looking at the radar it does appear that there was a stream of cloud running up approximately from Weymouth to the N and the a clear band further East which probably equates to where you are.
  12. Artdemole, Looking at the name of where you live, do you get a lot of heavy rain? ;-) (sorry, I couldn't resist that one!)
  13. METO have just issued alert for whole of Dorset almost centrally within their 'yellow ' area for this evening and tomorrow Netweather showing the rain to east and west of us as you also suggest Dorset seems to be avoiding the worst of the wet (which is why its a nice place to live!!)
  14. Meto issued a yellow alert at 10.57 which quite amused me because this pulse of rain had been showing on the radar for a little while. I thought rain would already have been falling in the extreme SW . Perhaps it caught them off guard as day shift took over? Anyone down Truro way know when the rain actually started? More significantly however is that Meto have now issued a general alert for the whole of the south coast for Thursday
  15. Thanks Coast - a tight call then as to whether we take the open topped car (we can survive a shower but not persistent rain) I like the photos - were they taken at Revival last year or was it 2011 when they had all the massed flight of Spitfires?
  16. I am shortly heading off for a long weekend at Goodwood Revival The weather on the old aerodrome is usually somewhat different to that on the higher ground. I have just looked at a dozen or more sites giving local weather forecasts and all seem to differ very markedly. Do any of you regional folk have confidence in what the next three days are likely to bring in terms of daytime rain? If it is only the occasional shower we shall go prepared in one way, but will take a different tack if it looks like more prolonged or heavy rain.
  17. Yes I think this will prove correct in general (ie nothing extraordinary such as would justify a warning for sw) Presumably Meto don't feel the fluctuation has finished yet and that it is too early to withdraw their longer term and fairly general 'alert', even though the models currently put the heavy rain further North It does seem odd when two outputs from the same organisation (Meto) give a contradictory forecast. As for today the altostratus is edging back westwards so we again appear to be on the edge of it. At lunch time it was interesting looking at con trails which started and stopped very abruptly and cleanly on each edge of the bands of altostratus cloud. This shows nicely the undulation in the boundary between the moist and dry (or cold and warm) layers of air. The con trails evaporated very quickly in the clear air. It would be really nice to see that mapped in cross section to visualise just how the boundary is behaving.
  18. the edge of the altocumulus currently runs in a N-S line over us, just East of Dorchester and slowly moving NE interesting to watch this one as we have a Meto weather alert covering all of Dorset (shaded yellow) for tomorrow and Saturday but their 5 day local forecast gives no rain on Saturday so Mapantz earlier post looks likely to be correct ( Meto to change area covered by yellow shading)
  19. Just been out wih the dogs taken the dogs and 1/2 mile to our west it is distinctive line of grey misty cloud and gentle westerly breeze. The sun was starting to burn through this by the time I got back. Another glorious day ahead.
  20. Exactly my problem - 10 mile drive too so shall have to keep over 50mph to keep dry, even on the back roads!!! Lovely morning here, bright sun, calm and fresh. This and May are my favourite times of year.
  21. I feel like I'm playing roulette. We have an open top car which has to go for MoT on Saturday morning just to the East of the area currently shaded yellow by MetOffice. It is also the Dorchester Show this weekend. Can we be lucky, just this once?
  22. just planning what to do today. meto has the rain arriving here at 13:00, netweather has 16:00. Looking at radar it does seem that meto will be nearest the mark so outdoors chores will be done this morning!
  23. Looking at radar it looks as though the main course is just leaving the kitchen In Cherbourg and the waiter is heading towards IoW. Not clear just how far west that will spread but the band of rain does appear to be getting wider as well as intensifying.
