  1. I have just heard the forecast for New Years Eve and New Years Day....mainly drunk with the chance of a hangover.........Happy two thousand and twenty three everyone It feels like a lifetime ago since the freeze and blizzard of New Year 1978-79 we certainly won’t be ending ‘22 with a blizzard, some similarities to what was going on then but unfortunately not weather ones …… “In autumn 1978, Britain was in the throes of upheaval. The prime minister was Labour man James Callaghan, but the problems had been brewing for some time, with the global energy crisis of the 1970s. Excessive trade union power coupled with the government’s failed incomes policy, which led to a fall in real earnings for millions of people, saw industrial relations deteriorate rapidly over 1978. By January 1979 vast numbers of public and private sector workers were routinely striking, officially and unofficially, including water workers, truck drivers, and nurses. At one point ambulance drivers in some parts of the country were refusing to attend 999 calls, leading to the army having to come in to provide a skeleton service. Rubbish piled up on the streets as dustmen went on strike and at one point in some parts of the country even gravediggers went on strike and bodies went unburied.” Oh well there is always next year …. SSW for January maybe ?
  2. @Reefseeker Brie & Cranberry Quiche (Lady Canarvon’s recipe) Turkey Al la King served with salad & jacket spuds, Jubilee Trifle with a twist and a meringue wreath with Chantilly cream, raspberries & blueberries - most of it has gone so all seems to have been a hit with my guests! it’s finally stopped raining, hopefully tomorrow will be less wet & windy as I actually need to leave the house at some point 2nd load emptied from the dishwasher so an night for me I think
  3. I've always managed to drag the one I do have out over about a week of celebrating so another one would seem a tad greedy really I've been in the kitchen all morning prepping for visitors later - two main and two dessert options all made and ready so hopefully it will be easy later - all the time it's been raining so I haven't missed much the view out the kitchen window was depressing (apart from the wildlife visiting, we can add a Jay to our bird family now which is nice and the squirrels seem to be increasing in numbers .....we obviously have good grub here) Feel a little croaky after the panto last night, hopefully was too much singing and shouting rather than the start of something nasty !
  4. Thank you but it’s Floatylight’s birthday not mine x Got wet this evening at the venue theatre but that’s what happens when the Panto Dame has a super squirter to aim and fire at the audience (at least it wasn’t custard pies or wall paper paste this year ) It looks like we are going to have to get used to this wet and windy stuff well into the new year - think I might hibernate for a while
  5. Sounds like fun… I love how these strange rituals & traditions are kept going especially when they raise money for charities
  6. That’s not a tradition I’ve ever heard of before, what’s it all about ? Boxing Day hunt (minus the fox kill these days) and a strange thing called a “Mummers play” with Morris men dancers goes on round here, no idea what that’s all about either !
  7. Cinnamon danish (one of my favourites but don’t allow myself to have them often, same with the pecan ones) I found a pic of my last Sherpa (it was a heart attack I think ) , but if your sure you still want to volunteer don’t say I didn’t warn you about the amount of excess baggage I travel with Leg of lamb my favourite roast, then Dreams & Wishes Panto at the Venue later happy days!
  8. Not on night shifts again are you ? I’m trying to decide what to have for breakfast, if I don’t hurry up it will be lunch It’s Panto day today…. Oh yes it is
  9. Aww thanks you might not say that when you see how much luggage there is to carry…. I dint travel light Yep, I guess you can have too much of a good thing - can’t imagine the chaos if we had 40 inches of snow
  10. Heating is only on 18-20c max here and we don’t have a kettle… the water heater only dispenses one mug full at a time same as the coffee machine I suppose the advantage of a mild winter will be the savings on heating, maybe I’ll save up the difference and use it go and find some snow somewhere up a mountain next year ️
  11. Our highest day this winter (so far) on the smart meter was £30 for gas & electricity combined, thankfully most days it’s about half of that!
  12. I have naughty elves at my house they make a mess and steal food ! The stitches in my hand have got me out of quite a few chores though so that’s a result I haven’t looked at any charts the ramped up jet stream won’t be doing us any favours, I noticed a SSW mentioned but I expect we are a long way off getting anything cold & snowy certainly for the next couple of weeks - feels like Buffalo stole my snow ️
  13. Sounds like you will be burping and squeaking from both ends later then cold cuts of gammon & turkey with Jacket spuds and salad on the lunch menu here today washed down with a very nice Chardonnay smoked salmon and prawn canapés for this evening with cocktails my baileys cheesecake seems to be disappearing quickly either someone had a midnight feast or a very early breakfast Much better day here weather wise - touch of frost first thing, blue sky and sunshine, felt quite warm sitting in the tub watching the squirrels play - back to the telly box now, will have square eyes soon
  14. Getting in is worse (just need to be quick), getting out is okay as your core temperature is higher so the cold just feels a bit tingly on the skin but a nice thick towelling robe is a must in winter anyways ! Merry Xmas to all and to all a good night x
  15. Special plastic wine glasses for use in the hot tub, elf & safety rules Thick ice on the lid last week when it was freezing, which shows how well insulated Canadian spas are, apparently it’s good down to at least minus 30 but I doubt we will ever put that to the test here in MK!
  16. Hot tub might be a bit tricky but I’ll be in there tomorrow morning with my Buck’s Fizz ….I’ve got a freezer bag and elastic band at the ready, would have been nicer in the snow but hopefully will get another chance soon enough ️
  17. No knives just a ring pull can of pineapple of all things I won’t be carving anything…or washing up I have to keep the stitches dry Porn star martini time here
  18. Thanks you too x - my afternoon before Christmas was spent at MK general hospital for an unexpected (but thankfully and remarkably quick) trip to A&E - a few stitches and steri strips later and I’m mended, just self medicating with gin now and have a perfect excuse to rest
  19. Well the feasting and festivities have well and truly begun here, not much to get excited about weather wise, I think it will be mid January before we see a return to proper winter weather so I’m going to relax and enjoy a G&T Xmas (green & traditional) cheers merry Christmas to all x
  20. No Christmas cards ? Very soggy and boggy here, hopefully it improves later as off to the land of lights this evening!
  21. Is that a Santa kinda "ho ho ho" or a pirate one ready for when you get your patch after the eye op ?
