  1. Happy New Year everyone! Had a bit of light rain here earlier this morning despite temperatures being around zero
  2. Starting to settle down here now right by the sea
  3. Looks like it's all starting to kick off now... folk on high ground are in for a wild night
  4. Flakes starting to develop in the rain here now
  5. Sky is gradually getting darker in Cardiff Bay with the occasional spot of rain/sleet
  6. Keeps alternating here too... Only getting flakes when the precipitation intensifies. Still better than just rain all day.
  7. In the last 5 mins heavy rain in Cardiff bay has turned to snow! Wasn't expecting it this far south :O
  8. Wow lots of doom and gloom Has tonight been written off then?
  9. Latest from the met for tonight: 'A small, but vigorous area of low pressure will move south down the Irish Sea to affect southwestern parts of England and Wales. Strong winds will develop along the southern flank of the depression. The strongest winds are expected to be along coasts exposed to the northwest, over high ground and also near heavy showers. The showers will be a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow; snow primarily over higher ground, where some slight accumulations are likely, but temporarily at low-levels.' An interesting night ahead!
  10. That shower lasted about 1 minute?! The weather gods are teasing us
  11. Sleet is turning to snow in Cathays!
  12. Also looking good for tonight across much of Wales before slightly milder air comes in on Friday.
  13. Rain showers in Cardiff - correction - it's just turned to sleet.
  14. I hope we're not in for another hail and lightning fest tonight...
  15. Cold rain is probably the worst weather I can think of tbh :/ would rather it was 12c than 4c so we could at least not have the heating on so much...
  16. Raining in Cathays area of Cardiff, wondering what all the fuss is about
  17. As tomorrow evening progresses and dew points start to drop, there is a chance the rain could turn to snow at lower levels briefly, however I think by the time the colder air digs in and dew points drop enough the precipitation will be gone.
  18. HAHAHA the Countryfie forecast was so vague
  19. It's a marginal situation for next week, and I'm afraid we're slightly on the wrong side of marginal for low-lying southern areas, and cold rain is likely. That's just the luck of the draw, you win some, you lose some. It wouldn't be foolish to keep checking the forecast, however, since there is a possibility they could change, but I think we should accept defeat and not EXPECT anything. There will always be other opportunities, and it's only mid January.
  20. Good to see many people saw snow last night! Looks like there could be more on the way tonight. It's just been cold rain here in central Cardiff, even last night, it down to about -2 with a heavy frost, but when the precipitation came it fell as rain. I saw Derek has tweeted he expects cold rain on Tuesday for most lowland areas We'll see. Remember a lot of snowfalls are unexpected, and can come from things like troughs that the models struggle to pick up on until the last minute. The longer this cold spell lasts, the more chance of unexpected snowfalls Also, I didn't want to ask this in the model thread so hopefully someone here might know - is the GFS still considered to be an 'over-progressive' model in situations like these? It seems it's had a lot of updates recently?
  21. They did mention a trough coming down from the north west on Friday night into Saturday morning, will be interesting to see if this delivers snow to more low lying areas as temperatures WILL be lower by then. However, looks like only high ground will get snow over the weekend, at least during the daytime.
