Snow pepping up again here in Longwood. Huddersfield New College closed earlier. As I said before-I'll bet Scapegoat Hill/Outlane etc are much worse. Certainly more than I expected & shows the Met can get it a bit wrong sometimes-they certainly didn't (in my opinion) forecast the heaviness & persistance of the snow.

Well the weather gods are smiling on upper Longwood, Huddersfield (162m asl)-CHUCKING it down with big fat flakes of snow. G/F works at New College-about 40 metres higher up-even worse there! Setting-at least 2-3 inches here. Would gusess higher areas of Hudds like Outlane/Scapegoat hill & the a640 trans pennine rout to rochdale will be very bad! Day off tomorrow & as forecast to be sunny & very cold I feel a nice walk on the moors will be just the ticket!

Model Output Discussion; into 2015
brachetthecub replied to martthefart's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
Hi guys/gals-I don't often post in the model thread as I really do not have the knowledge to 'suss' out the charts! All I can say (& sorry this is a bit IMBY )is that where I live-165m asl near Huddersfield it hardly got above freezing yesterday & is 1 degree today-lovely picture postcard scenery here in the pennines. There was as far as I can gather MORE snow in a more extensive area & the snow was not just high ground. So...with all the science & models in the world....mother nature can catch us out & give more snow than forecast. I seem to remember a few days ago the extent of snow was not forecast to this degree. Anyway-I'm rambling-I still 'feel' this winter will deliver more extensive snow. Mods-please delete if you feel this post is not appropriate.......... P.S. Frosty-did you get snow in Wakefield? -
Morning all! I have to leave Huddersfield (upper Longwood area-160m asl) to go to Cambridgeshire (M62/A1 for most of the journey) & will be leaving cambridgeshire 1pm is-hopefully back to Hudds 4 to 4-30pm. Looks to me that any snow will be overnight....not concened re: motor ways but Longwood edge road is STEEP-anyone got any ideas on amounts/timings etc?

Winter of 79-soz to be thick but not sure how to do that? I'm in the highest bit of Longwood.
-
Can deffo see a good covering on the higher pennines towards Meltham/Peak district. Just had wet snow here at 162masl-not a hope of it sticking but nice to see!
-
I live about 162 m asl not far from the m62 in Huddersfield. Can see that hills towards the peak district/above Meltham are white & saw a few flakes earlier. Think we might get a slight covering at 160m asl? In town centre earlier & showing 3 degrees-up nearer to ainly top-around 1.5 degrees! Still....nice for it to be wintry! Normally at 160asl I do quite well for snow-but last winter we had a freak 1 hr of snow (as it was unexpected it caused chaos!) & i saw a car on it's roof on Longwood Edge Road -so already a better winter than last!
-
I'm around 165m ASL in Upper Longwood, outside of Huddersfield.. Times/chances of settling snow??? I know it probably won't amount to much but would be nice to see.!

Winter of 79-funnily enough my ASL is almost exactly the same as yours! I live near the Dusty Miller in Upper Longwood. Isn't altitude amazing-snow up at sainsburys in salendine nook (allbeit wet!)-sleet down here-although I can see the 'whiteness' on the hills opposite coming down. I would think anywhere 230m ASL or more could have nasty conditions later! -

I suppose the altitude I'm at (160-170mASL) helps-no melt here! -

Thanks Pennine! I've been in Huddersfield now for 15 years-from East Anglia originally-amazes me how much difference in this neck of the woods that elavation makes! If I look at the car temperature it is, without fail the roundabout in Marsh on New Hey Road (A640) where temp drops by a degree EVERY time! Strange!!!??? Just seen bbc 24 news-Thomas said up to 20cms in pennine areas-we'll see lol! -

Pennine 10 Foot Drifts. I'm close to you in Upper Longwood (about 620 ft ASL). Agree re: snizzle! A good 1-2 degrees colder here than town centre! Whats your view on this latest 'event' for us? -

Light snow here in Upper Longwood, Huddersfield. 0.5 degrees here (I'm 170m ASL) & settling on cars. Drove down to the petrol station on Manchester Road-just before Linthwaite (I'd guess 100 m asl-possible less?)-car thermometer 1.5 degrees-still snowing but NOT settling. Just shows how 70/80 metres makes all the difference! Interesting to see what we get on the AMBER warning tomorrow-Hudds is just on the edge....but I'm east of the city centre-they say 10 cm possible over 150 m ASL-we'll see! -
Hope so! Where abouts are you? I used to Live in Linthwaite on Manchester Road-& if there was wet snow/sleet at that level it magically turned to thick proper settled snow-always around the Dusty Miller pub in Longwood lol (!)

Morning guys/gals! A bit confused as BBC/METO local forecasts give SLEET for a time at my location? I live at 695 feet ASL near Longwood on the outskirts of Huddersfield? Would have thought at my height would be all snow? Or is the METO text forecast from data thats already out of date? Anyone more expert than me care to advise?

Just been up to the viewpoint on the a640 Rochdale (from Huddersfield) road. Left my house-1.5 degrees-rain/poss sleet (I live 194m ASL)-3 miles or so out of Outlane to the viewpoint for Marsden Moor (350/400m ASL i think??)-last mile to that was almost a whiteout-roads NOT good-minus one on car thermometer. Settling snow down to Outlane (I only live 1 1/2 miles away!)-yet parked at Sainsburys in Salendine Nook (probably 180/190 m ASL)-car thermometer says -0.5c but SLEETY RAIN-wahts that all about-or is my car thermometer a bit dodge??!

Just started in Upper Longwood, Huddersfield. Not sure of temp but snow/frost from yesterday not melting (car thermometer said 1-1.5 earlier)> I'm 194M ASL. Lets see if it stays like this ...! -
Thanks southpennines 88! I used to live in Linthwaite-at about 120-130m ASL?? High enough up for snow there & rain in Huddersfield town centre. However, on driving up to the A640 trans-pennine road I pass where I now live-& it was at that rough point that very wet snow/sleet turned to proper snow...so heres hoping!!!!!!!! Southpennine 88-do you think the higher areas like Holme Moss will deffo have a covering? I have a new digital camera that I can't wait to use!
-
Hi guys! Live 193m ASL just outside of Huddersfield-near Longwood-any thoughts on snow settling at this height?

HELP! Can anyone advise...my g/f WAS due to fly home this am at 11am from Geneva -Liverpool (woken at 3am by a text from Easyjet saying flight cancelled!!)...re-booked her to fly Saturday at 1330 from Chambery in the Southern French Alps (spot of luck as she lives in Chambery!) back to Leeds-do you think she has a fighting chance of the ash not being on the flight-path & she can actually fly?? To complicate matters her sister is flying from Geneva at noon this Sunday to Manchester...what chance will she have? What a nightmare! Any advice would be great! We are of course checking the jet2 web-site & the NATS web-site. I am cr*p with the charts...wind direction etc so hoped some of you guys could help!
