  1. We had to pop over to Coldingham for something this evening and the wind wasn't too bad but the rain was very heavy. On the way back home though - it's windy and very heavy rain in places. Many roads have surface water on them - and some roads now have wet leaves covering them. Surprisingly just outside the village on the way from Duns - while the temperature is 0.5 degrees warmer than Greenlaw, there was huge blobs of sleet hitting the windscreen - I'm not sure what the elevation of the hill is (I'm going to check Google though) but it seems like the possibility of sleet at lower levels is higher than was expected - because everything I have heard is 500+ metres for snow..... Elevation finder places the hill ( 55.72861,-2.44510 ) at about 224m
  2. Despite the station not reporting anything particularly horrible - it's very gusty and the heavy rain is heavy and not falling vertically....
  3. ....and where abouts in the Borders do I need to take a run in the car to find heavy proper snow?
  4. Looking like steadily getting wetter and windier from about 9pm for my neck of the woods. While the temperatures may be between 3-5, strong winds from the NE will make it feel bitter and the heavy rain will make it feel miserable..... Cold and Damp without actually being "cold" - awesome..... just the sort of weather I love...... (no not really). Looking further ahead though, it does look like once the system has passed, we are back to dry, settled, temperatures struggling to make it much past freezing again.... But..... sigh..... we have the coldest overnight period of the year and in a lot of cases - the coldest November temperature, rain arrives and somehow we still manage to not get snow......
  5. So it's currently -6.2 not far to go to beat the -6.9 record. But look at the average temperature temperature...... -2.5 Edit: We beat the record at around 2:45am
  6. All the stations we track are now below 3C - so the whole of Scotland is now officially frosty! 5 of the warmest stations we track - are below freezing and obviously all of the coldest stations are below freezing. Burntisland is warmest at 2.8 and (ignoring Stornoway airport which is annoyingly reporting -24 which is a frequent error) Cairgorm Summit is reporting -5.2 Here in Greenlaw we are at -3.4 with most other Scottish Borders stations within a degree of us (warmer) which is normal because Greenlaw is in a bit of a frost hollow. Fingers crossed we break the -6.9 record and if we break the -7.1 barrier - it will be the coldest 2016 temperature which was set at 1:25am on Tue, 16th February 2016 as can be seen in this useful Winter Stats page I set up for people wanting to question Daily Express headlines..... http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/wxwinter.php
  7. Our Scottish stations league page has all 25 minimum temperatures below freezing - 2 hours quicker than yesterday. (Note Traffic Scotland data is not owned by them, so I cannot report the temperatures on the website - but the stations are positioned according to their temperature) http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/wxleague.php
  8. So I didn't come back and report after my last post. We reached an overnight low of -3.7 on that day (24 hour AVG of -0.1 Friday). Yesterday we ended the day with a 24 hour AVG of -0.6! The overnight low was -5.5 which means we have beaten the records set (at this station) for 2007 and 2009 - 2015. The only colder November temperature is 2008 which is -6.9 The current 24 hour AVG is sitting at -2.5 with more than half the day gone, it's likely to end up below yesterdays -0.6. As for mist some people have mentioned - around 3am we had freezing fog here....
  9. Since there isn't a lot being reported on here right now -
  10. Thank you very much. It's down to light level - when there is a lot of snow on the ground which makes the picture brighter and hence the camera receives more light - then it passes the threshold where it can switch to colour mode, the camera that is seeing more sky than road though even if the entire road is covered with snow - the sky is black so it will stay in night mode until the sky gets light - OR - very very heavy snow falling in front of the camera makes the picture bright enough to switch out of night mode.
  11. That would be good - I have to live vicariously through everyone else at the moment - apparently just living in Scotland isn't enough to get snow Low temperatures... yup.... Snow.... if we are VERY lucky.
  12. Haha just assumed you would be up until at least sunrise....
  13. I wanted to have a look but they must have georestrictions on the site? It just says "No CCTV Found" for like everything!
  14. It's a shame you can't provide a live feed when it kicks off - but please do stay safe!
  15. Whats the elevation? I've been sort of expecting snow around there looking at the radar and temperatures on NW.
  16. 967.86 - I don't think I have ever seen air pressure drop so rapidly - I'm glad I'm well North though - because I reckon I would suffer from a terrible headache in that sort of rapid pressure drop. Out of interest - how fast (or is it far) does a pressure drop have to be before it is declared a pressure "bomb"?
  17. The electric blanket got put back on the bed tonight, as I type it is currently -3.5 yesterday we only managed -1.6 so we are already much colder. We've beaten the minimums recorded for these Novembers: Nov 2014 -02.2 Nov 2007 -01.9 Nov 2015 -01.7 Nov 2009 -01.5 We have to beat -6.9 to be the coldest recorded November temperature (since 2007) and -7.1 to bet the coldest 2016 temperature. We shall see........ (Oh yesterdays average temperature for the entire day ended up at 0.1C)
  18. So I had a quick look at the GEFS tonight as I have been over the last few nights because I am interested in seeing how low the pressure for my location will go - and as you would expect the first several days have runs pretty much in agreement with each other until tonight when the GEFS of all 4 runs combined shows this - how can there be any faith in any of the data when Day 0 has so much spread? Edit: The air pressure for this location is currently 982hPa just to compare to any of the ensembles.....
  19. Thunder picked up on the new Microsferics Lightning Network of which myself and Fifeweather are participants. See the mLDN data and timelapse here: http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/wxlightning.php
  20. Whilst we managed to reach the incredibly dizzying heights of 8.5 here today - it's felt bitterly cold all day and it's been drizzling on and off for the last several hours. The temperature took a nosedive about an hour before sunset and we very quickly fell below 3'C and is as I type hovering between 2.1 and 2.8.....
  21. The app on my phone which uses DarkSky.net as it's forecast source - now has us down for Snow on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday..... that's quite an upgrade. https://darksky.net/details/55.706,-2.463/2016-11-21/uk224/en
  22. When there is a snow event - many of us rural members probably lose internet and / or power..... such is the life of living rural
  23. Officially I believe Science says there is no real connection, but we know the moon affects the tide, we know the moon is responsible for the slight bulge in the shape of the planet and we know that the interior of the planet is both molten and also water - I fail to see how anything external that effects the pressure inside the planet could not possibly be responsible for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. And right now - there are plenty of people in New Zealand who are asking the same thing.
  24. A very mild night, also quite a wet one. The league table runs from +15 to +1.2 (yup the temperature at the Cairngorm Summit has finally risen above freezing). It's currently 8.1 in Greenlaw and the pressure over 24 hours has dropped from 1020mb to 1006mb but is now very much on the rise.
