  1. Local stations reporting 13c today which is not bad in a late April northerly. Its been one of those days where todays chart paints a worse picture that reality.

Indeed- I'm in the middle of the showery belt at the moment, it dropped as low as 4.2 in the latest shower!

Felt gorgeous almost all day here - so long as the sun is out it feels good but yes soon as it goes its chilly.

  2. Arguably a better day here than yesterday. Max a little lower at 18.8c but bags of sunshine and lighter winds.

    1. Thundery wintry showers

      Thundery wintry showers

Here the sunshine helped to raise the temperature higher than yesterday's- 18.0 as opposed to 17.1!

two nice days on the bounce. Was in Norwich yesterday where the temperature reached 21 degree :)

  3. After weeks and weeks of waiting were almost there. Spring begins tomorrow.

  4. Now theres a nice GFS. Finally we lose the easterly and instead get a clear northerly with temperatures a notch higher than at present. Then the high sinks and it becomes milder. Sunshine amounts would be plentiful if that were to verify which is good as we would certainly notice the extra hour in the evening.

Spring 2006 was most definitely a cold spring in this part of the country. In the past 40 years only the springs of 1979, 1986 and 1996 were colder.

    4. Derp Patrol

      Derp Patrol

Spring 2006 was definitely a cold on e here as well. People forget that averages don't define how you feel the weather, it is max temperatures and sunshine levels. Much like 2007 was close to average due to high minima

  5. What a lovely day. Lots of people out and about and heard lots of comments of how nice it was.

      Thundery wintry showers

Agreed, on all counts. I was rather disappointed by yesterday, and thus pleasantly surprised by today.

  6. Another week and the sun will set an hour later than it did in mid December. Slowly but surely edging back to lighter evenings.

    1. Bottesford

      Bottesford

Yes darkest period is now ending. The snow helps it feel lighter - I could actually see my keys when I went to open the door! Be very glad when the dark afternoons are behind us that's for sure.

      Costa Del Fal

Yes, its nearing 5.30 when it gets dark here in Cornwall now! :D

  7. Now where did i put that BBQ lol. Joking aside i realise it will be more like gloves and hat in a weeks time but i must say its glorious outside today.

1994/95 was a good example of a mild winter that I quite enjoyed due to the strength of the Atlantic-driven activity, but it seems to me that most Atlantic-driven spells in recent autumns & winters have been mellow, at least by comparison.

  10. I see the pattern of the start of summer is threatening to return looking at the models which looks like it will signal an end to the mostly pleasant conditions of the last 2 months. Warm and dry is how i would describe the weather since mid July round here. Its raised my hopes and expectations for next year.

    1. Scorcher

      Scorcher

It really is depressing to me- think I may have to go into exile early this year! Sometimes model watching can just get you down. At times I find it hard to find positives about living in the UK!

    2. wimblettben

      wimblettben

Southern areas of the UK had a better second half of Summer then Northern areas. Although it was unsettled here, I wouldn't say it was overly wet.

    3. No Balls Like Snow Balls

      No Balls Like Snow Balls

Its just the weather scorcher not a life or death situation. Man up and get out and enjoy the UK what ever the weather.

  11. Shame no hot spell this weekend after all. I was really looking forward to one after todays grotty conditions. Should be warmer at least.

  13. All those who thought/hoped that the Olympics would be a washout should eat a large slice of humble pie. Its not been bad at all. I well and truly believe we have overcome that dreadful pattern that plagued the first half of summer.

    1. Nick L

      Nick L

Agreed Aaron! It's more than comfortable to go outside in a t-shirt. That's all that's needed for enjoyment!

  14. If only next weeks low could stall in the Atlantic delivering a spell similar to that of last Autumn with a hot southerly developing. Sadly any warm settled spell looks all too brief.

    1. Snowy Easterly

      Snowy Easterly

no doubt it will quickly blast any hot air out of the way then come september, a low will get stuck in the atlantic and we will get a plume

    2. Summer Sun

      Summer Sun

Yep hopefully a warm Autumn will be coming our way after this awful summer.

  15. Add the Great Yorkshire Show to list of cancelled events this Summer. Very sad.

    1. Bottesford

      Bottesford

Yeah a really challenging year for outdoor events & gardeners too. Factor in flood damage, reduced domestic tourism and increased coughs & colds (keeping people off work) it must have cost a fortune to the economy.

GFS 12z isn't to bad for mid/late next week either, although will only be short-lived as heat can't hold for long as usual.

  18. Sad thing is if i was shown the GFS chart for Wednesday i would be convinced that another heatwave was on the way. How can it go so horribly wrong in the space of a cople of days.

    1. Milhouse

      Milhouse

Well according to the 12z another heatwave is on the way, just a week later than planned.

  19. Temperature still 15c here. The first decently mild evening of the year.

      Scorcher

Come on, surely no one can complain about a humid 18 or 19c, I went out running in it yesterday and it wasn't that bad. 28C with high humidity, now that would be a different matter!

  20. Contrasting fortunes tomorrow. For the south its a taste of summer with maxes of 20c. For the north its back to Winter with 6c and snow.

  21. It seems the contryfile forecast had the same problem as the met office site in forecasting maxes barely into double figures for the coming week. Whats going on there?

    1. I remember Atlantic 252

      I remember Atlantic 252

if cloud dosent clear then max temps anywhere i would have thought around 8-9C, no tropical air in place

  22. Finally got rid of that mist and murk that has hung around for several days. Feels nicer out there as a result.

  23. Fantastic light levels today with the dry clear air and the noticeably higher sun.

That means that in a months time, the sunset will be roughly half an hour later but the sunrise will only be a couple of minutes earlier than it is now.

      Summer Sun

Well as evening is 6 pm onwards for most people it will be a while until they can sit out in the light in the evening, not until the clocks are put forward for any decent length of time

    1. Milhouse

      Milhouse

And the west coast too by the look of it.
