1994/95 was a good example of a mild winter that I quite enjoyed due to the strength of the Atlantic-driven activity, but it seems to me that most Atlantic-driven spells in recent autumns & winters have been mellow, at least by comparison.

That means that in a months time, the sunset will be roughly half an hour later but the sunrise will only be a couple of minutes earlier than it is now.

      Summer Sun

The sun here sets 2 minutes later on the 21st and 22nd than it does today which is 15:39 today and 15:41 on Wednesday

Well as evening is 6 pm onwards for most people it will be a while until they can sit out in the light in the evening, not until the clocks are put forward for any decent length of time

  5. After weeks and weeks of waiting were almost there. Spring begins tomorrow.

  6. Now theres a nice GFS. Finally we lose the easterly and instead get a clear northerly with temperatures a notch higher than at present. Then the high sinks and it becomes milder. Sunshine amounts would be plentiful if that were to verify which is good as we would certainly notice the extra hour in the evening.

    3. Richard2901

      Richard2901

Spring 2006 was most definitely a cold spring in this part of the country. In the past 40 years only the springs of 1979, 1986 and 1996 were colder.

    4. Derp Patrol

      Derp Patrol

Spring 2006 was definitely a cold on e here as well. People forget that averages don't define how you feel the weather, it is max temperatures and sunshine levels. Much like 2007 was close to average due to high minima

  7. March saw repeated attempts from the Atlantic thwarted by blocking high pressure to the north and we remained the dull raw cloudy. It would be sods law if now its summer the Atlantic bulldozed its way through with ease after having such a hard time during march.

      Eugene

lol ok ask people if they think June is stormier(atlantic based) than March on average and see how many agree with you, maybe someone could start a poll on the forums

    3. Eugene

      Eugene

We aren't talking of the season of Spring though but March in particular as mentioned by milhouse

    4. Eugene

      Eugene

Of course westerlies do pick up in June after May when they are at their lowest but March definitely can have a more active atlantic than June particularly early and late month, gales can be almost as strong as in December in March whilst June they aren't as strong, atlantic depressions are more slow moving in June

  8. Local stations reporting 13c today which is not bad in a late April northerly. Its been one of those days where todays chart paints a worse picture that reality.

The ECM tonight has not backed down an inch. Serious high heat and humidity this weekend followed by a very warm and sunny week by the looks of it.

  14. West is best for a change in the upcoming week. Sunshine may be limited but plenty of dry weather around and temperatures around average for the time of year.

  21. June 2007 or June 2012 it definately isnt. The models and full of potential for summer to get going very soon. It could all go wrong, but how about we bother about that if it happens and not be so pessimistic with whats been shown NOW.

Although the last few days' operational runs were mostly showing low pressure over the UK, I noticed that the ECMWF ensemble mean frequently had the trough out west and southerly winds over Britain. It seems that the operational runs today have picked up on this and brought the trough a bit further west too.

    3. Eugene

      Eugene

Yet scott you are foolish enough to believe any runs that back up your weather preferences, it can so easily change back to a less favourable solution for you, don't look at GEM 12Z if I was you, wouldn't believe anything past T+72 hrs TBH, models change all the time and to pin your hopes on them is very foolish indeed

    4. Eugene

      Eugene

Also the main thrust of the plume looks like heading into Germany, we are stuck in cooler but still warm SSW'lys, could head back our way of course but after many years of experience of watching the models they usually push further East as we get even nearer

  22. Shame no hot spell this weekend after all. I was really looking forward to one after todays grotty conditions. Should be warmer at least.
