  1. Amazing regional variations right now. Helen Willetts on BBC weather saying about ‘WE badly need the rain’ which initially made my jaw drop because where I am we’ve had plentiful amounts of late, everywhere is thoroughly green and lush, then I look at posts from other parts of the country saying that hardly any rain has fallen.
  2. Just hearing Helen Willetts on the latest forecast saying about how the weather starting to settle down is not good news because we really do need the rain’ Excuse me? We don’t all live in the South East Ms Willetts... Maybe I missed the heavy downpours of yesterday, the near constant rain of the previous two days, the wash out Saturday at the end of April, all of which has resulted in everywhere looking thoroughly green and lush, if you ignore the huge puddles dotted around...
  3. No thunder here but some pretty heavy hail which was starting to lead to a covering.
  4. Action replay of yesterday. Cloudy wet and distinctly chilly feeling day. 8c
  5. Meanwhile up here it looks and feels like a day in February. Cloudy with light rain and drizzle but cold. Temperature at an epic 8c with a NE wind.
  6. I am surprised to put it mildly that the Met Office failed to issue a rain warning for North Wales and North West England, given the fact that one was issued for Northern Ireland which was for an expected 20-30mm of rainfall. This part of the world has seen between 30mm and in excess of 50mm in the wettest areas such as parts of Cheshire. The rain has been simply relentless, hour upon hour, making a bit of a mockery of the forecast of ‘showery rain’ The roads in my town are awash, bad surface water flooding making driving a real hazard when I was out earlier. Where is the consistency with these warnings?
  7. It went very cool if not distinctly chilly during the heavy rain/hail shower which has not long ago cleared through. Temperature dropped to just 11c at the peak of the shower, adding on the gusty winds which accompanied it and yep...chilly!
  8. Normal August weather has arrived. Cloudy skies and 16c. And to think less than 200 miles away it's 31c+
  9. 11mm of rain - grass is greening up nicely with this and the other decent rainfalls we've had in the last couple of weeks. More importantly it will help the firefighters deal with the wildfires up the Horseshoe Pass near Llangollen.
  10. No heatwave here either..20c showery rain. Rain total for the week now at 28.1mm
  11. It has been cooler in the last 10 days but in truth I for one am not complaining about that. Not when you consider how poor recent summers have been...also I do confess to feeling more than a touch of amusement reading posts from SE England members grumbling that it's too hot while we have far more comfortable but still pleasant temperatures.
  12. 2nd sunless day in a row with more of a breeze than yesterday which delivered 12.8 mm of rain in the end. 27mm of rain this week. No wonder things are looking a little greener than a week ago.
  13. Rain just stopped. 11.7mm today. Add on the 14.2mm from Monday and that's 25.9mm in 5 days. Garden's had two half decent swig's of the good stuff this week.
  14. The met office 6-30 day outlook talks of a "west/east split in conditions" likely and "increasing threat of more organised rain in the west".
  15. Am up to 5.2mm rainfall for today (so far). Add the 14.2mm from Monday's thunderstorm and it's been a much improved week rain wise. I can almost hear the grass sigh it's relief as today's rain is just right, steady and persistent, soaking into the ground nicely.
  16. A normal summer's day here. 15c - cloudy with persistent steady rain. In a typical summer I would be cursing but this rain, following on from the 14mm that fell in the thunderstorm of the 16th July is very welcome indeed. 5 days this month now that we have had rainfall.
  17. 13.2mm of rain recorded from that thundery downpour. I can almost hear the grass starting to wake up after its long snooze.
  18. That is giving heavy rain to Oswestry in Shropshire right now.
  19. And it'll be getting closer every day from now on. PS I couldn't help but notice that you live at 8000m above sea level. Get altitude sickness much? .
  20. You summer loving guys can enjoy the coming vile heat and humidity but....every day from today onwards, the days start to shorten...by a few seconds per day at first but with ever increasing unstoppable momentum. Our time is coming again. 10 weeks til the start of meteorological Autumn (cackle)
  21. 11.08 this morning the sun begins its return journey, and the countdown to winter begins.
  22. July 1st/2nd 1968 Stationary thundery trough lying from Devon to Merseyside. Thunder and lightning recorded as being near continuous for 24 hours. Observer at Shrewsbury in Shropshire recorded 9 separate thunderstorms (including one notably severe travelling storm running S-N along the trough) before giving up counting! Red//brown rain from Saharan dust. Hail in excess of 5cm recorded including a stone of 7.5cm at Cardiff. Clear recollection of daytime darkness and the explosion from a nearby electricity substation as a result of it taking a direct hit from a bolt. July 3rd 2001 Lightning strikes recorded in excess of 80 per minute. My rain gauge recorded 59mm from the storm on this night but I suspect more than that amount fell. Notably dark before the storm cell was even within reasonable range as a result of the huge anvil shadow that preceded it.
  23. Well you better get started on building arks then. River levels are high as it is, fields already flooded. Seen enough sodding rain already this year
  24. It's certainly needed. Fields round my way are flooded, and roads are awash from rain and runoff. Very depressing and poor Spring so far. Haven't even managed to give my grass its first cut yet.
