  2. Time for another update Tuesday 7 April Ec-gfs after showing some differences over the past couple of days now look quite similar, at least in the uk area, both have marked troughing sw of the uk with ridging over the top into parts of the country and then westwards Noaa has been more like gfs the past 2-3 days, last evening and it goes its own way, although close inspection does reveal slight similarities w/sw of the uk to the other two. Perhaps a more nw-se split likely with noaa with ec-gfs suggesting less in the way of unsettled spells? Hard to tell really, but no full on atlantic onslaught seems likely on any of them. The noaa 8-14 is pretty similar to its 6-10 output. http://mp1.met.psu.edu/~fxg1/ECMWF_0z/hgtcomp.html Climate Prediction Center - 6-10 Day 500mb Outlook WWW.CPC.NCEP.NOAA.GOV

  7. Just back from my 'sanity' cycle in the Pentlands. Only out for an hour or so but a stunning evening. Beautiful moon, silent except for the wind and had the hills to myself!

  8. Warmest day so far as we scraped over 15c at lunchtime. Alas it didn't feel like it as the SW wind was strong all day so a significant wind chill. Dry with sunshine becoming very hazy by mid afternoon. Good day for gardening though and the plants are really starting to spring to life, especially the Clematis. Local farmer was out with the shotgun earlier trying to scare off a 100+ flock of geese that had descended on a field he sowed at the weekend, wonder if they were just having a service stop on the way "up north" or planning a more permanent residence. Could have also sworn I heard a house martin in the afternoon but no sight of it, maybe a hallucination thanks to the lock-down as they normally arrive at the end of the month at the earliest. Moon is indeed super to look at this evening, my poor attempt at capturing it via the phone camera.

  9. Pretty much sunshine all the way here today with a max of 13.7C though it felt warmer out of the breeze. Hope that skies stay clear for a view of the supermoon later. Started painting the back fence this afternoon but retreated when the two wee girls from the garden behind kept coming down to say hello. Both were coughing especially the wee one who is only two. As their parents both work at Ninewells hospital I thought that discretion was the better part of valour. Was I being a bit over cautious? Anyway just posted this in the CV thread. True?

  11. The North Atlantic 500mb and surface analysis for midnight Once the odd spot of frost/mist has cleared a dry and sunny day for most. But increasingly cloudy in the north west with the wind picking and also more cloud creeping into the far south, courtesy of the weakening warm front Overnight the cloud and patchy rain in the NW will track very slowly south east to reach N. Ireland whilst there is also some intermittent rain/drizzle on the warm front as it nudges north Still cloudy with patchy rain over N. Ireland and western Scotland on Wednesday but generally dry and sunny elsewhere Little change on Thursday with cloud still in the vicinity of the front in the north. But a low and associated fronts has tracked north west of Ireland The aforementioned fronts cross the country on Friday resulting in showery outbreaks and some longer periods of rain. On Saturday another frontal system has arrived from the west so another day of sunshine and showers with some longer periods of rain The gfs surface analysis is so much at variance with fax by Saturday that I'm inclined to await for the ecm before musing further on the weekend. And there is a problem with WB in any case this morning

  12. I got a day's work on a small hill well inland from here - I saw no-one all day Some hairy maggots: Colourful mosses: A rainbow that neatly lined up with the skyline: Long exposure water: that involved wet feet, not sure it was worth it and these are the tops of a couple of the north Strathfarrer ridge, still really snowy

  15. Hey Glad that you and your loved ones are safe and well. How nice to have a garden to enjoy at this time, and decent weather to go with it! Am good, thank you. Have been furloughed until the end of May. I’ve been pottering on the terrace planting dahlias, begonias and canna lilies in tubs and sowing more seeds. Beautiful weather here in Prague, low 20’s and clear skies, perfect Stay Safe and well everyone, best wishes to you all xx

  17. In the meantime a quick glance at the EC weeklies update for the last week of April and first of May 23 > 30 The tpv in a familiar position with the main lobe/trough northern Canada/NW Atlantic with the westerly upper flow abating considerable in the eastern Atlantic courtesy of some positive anomalies over western Europe. Indications of a quiet spell with temps a tad above average 01 > 08 Nothing drastically different but perhaps a tad more changeable with temps nearer average

  24. Afternoon all An early glance at the 12Z output suggests we are looking at synoptic evolutions that we often see at this time of year as the winter PV weakens. HP is able to build north as pressure drops over Iberia and the Med basin - something we often see in late spring/early summer. GFS keeps the HP close to the British Isles despite an attempt at retrogression in far FI. The question will be how the European trough develops from mid month as to whether it influences the weather in the far south but with HP centred over to just to the north, it will be fine for many away from southern and eastern parts and as we often see in such a set up it can become quite warm in the far NW - often, late April/early May is the best weather of the year in the NW Highlands and Hebrides. GFS 12Z Control shows what can happen if we do get retrogression, the trough drops into Scandinavia and we get a potent N'ly - again, not unusual for a final burst of cold at this time and this is a recognised Buchan cold spell and it's a classic set up with -4 to -8 850s coming down from the north and north east. Would that be enough for snow for the mountains ? I think so.

  25. 20.6c in south London. Warm for digging over the soil for planting next week. Soil really drying out quite rapidly. Could do with some wet weather now for early spring growth, met office outlook shaping up that way which will be useful and good.

  34. A much better day. Although the max temperature was similar to yesterday at 14c, the wind was lighter today so felt a lot warmer as a result, especially in the morning when there was plenty of unbroken sunshine. Got a lot cloudier in the afternoon but still pleasant outside. Chilly tonight though with temperature already down to 3c. Browsing Amazon earlier for stuff for the kids, irritating how a lot of the prices have jumped since the lockdown started (use the Keepa plugin for Chrome to get a historical idea of prices). So off to eBay and the same story there. Lack of supply or a case of collective profiteering...

  36. The ecm has a shallow trough moving east Frid/Sat bringing showery conditions and at times persistent rain to the country And over Saturday night another trough arrives from the west and starts to phase with it but is forced south east by the resurgent subtropical high to the west with the weather staying changeable

  38. I was out and about in the car this afternoon (first time for a week), essential?, depends on how you look at it. I went and picked up a trailer pre-loaded with fence posts & rails and took the trailer back afterwards. All done with minimal contact, maintaining social distancing rules at the timber merchant. It's a job that needs done, I have time to do it, and the two boys are going to learn how to build a fence. Anyway, on the way there and back, twice, I saw very few cars on the road. Not particularly busy toads normally, but it was very noticeably quieter. In fact I saw at least two to three times as many people out for a walk along the roads, or cyclists, than I saw cars. Very unusual, especially for a Monday.

  39. The local farmers are fairly putting in a major shift of late. It's not unusual to see the tractors working at 9pm. Ploughing is underway in the big field in front of the house, fair amount of dust being kicked up.

  42. I wouldn’t be so quick to rule it out for down your way, keep an eye of the wrf eu WWW.METEOCIEL.FR Meteociel propose de manière régulière le modèle à maille fine de WRF-NMM 0.05x0.05° (5km) sur 5 zones (France, Nord-Ouest, Nord-Est, Sud-Ouest, Sud-Est) et l'Italie... Then the shorter range wrf models if / when it gets into shorter time frames that is the model I use most for thundery stuff could be the type of setup to look for possible convergence zones too.

  46. Something to look forward to SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and near-Earth asteroids WWW.SPACEWEATHER.COM A COMET TALE: Comet ATLAS (C/2019 Y4) has sprung a tail--and it's impressive. "According to my observations, it is 1.2 degrees long," reports Gerald Rhemann who recorded this animation on March 27th from his backyard observatory in Eichgraben, Lower Austria: That's 3.3 million km, or more than twice as wide as the sun. The outer reaches of ATLAS's tail are still faint, but the gossamer filaments can be seen sweeping across the stars in Rhemann's animation. "I took these pictures using a 12-inch telescope," he says. Comet ATLAS is now shining like an 8th magnitude star--too dim to see with the unaided eye but and easy target for backyard telescopes like Rhemann's. The comet is expected to become much brighter. By the time it sweeps by the sun closer than Mercury in late May, it could rival Venus in the evening sky. That would be a comet tale, indeed.
