  1. Wow what a storm, lost count how many that is now this year, gutters overflowing, thunder but the main things were the intensity of the rain and possible rotation as about a third of the way into the storm sudden gusts with rain swirling in all directions, have some videos so will try and get them uploaded at some point, yet again flooding will be an issue here.

  2. I'd not go that far just yet The latter part of the month has a bit of promise for an upturn - we may see some high pressure ridging our way to break the unsettled spell. If the ensembles are anything to go by this morning, they appear to want to start to lift the trough as we head toward the final week of the month. It's a bit of a straw clutch for now I guess, but worth watching over the next 7 or 10 days to see if that starts to materialise at closer range. Not great: Some hope for the final week of the month? Nearer term though, not pleasant. Some chunky rainfall totals to end the week as low pressure barrells in. Thursday Friday The models are firming up on timing now, with both the UKV and Netwx models very similar in having the low over the centre/south of Ireland on Friday afternoon.

  3. The North Atlantic 500mb and surface analysis for midnight The low that has been dominating our weather of late is now just off the east coast of Scotland so for the time being the country remains within it's circulation Ergo still showers, but far less frequent of late, over Wales and most of England, and with plenty of sun it will be quite pleasant. But the area closer to the low, i.e. N. Ireland, northern England and in particular Scotland, will see more frequent thundery downpours which will be slow moving in the lighter winds. The showers will fade away this evening and overnight, albeit hanging around for a while over Scotland but even here they eventually start to fizzle out. Thus a night a fresher night with plenty of clear periods Thursday will be a much better day for most with sunny intervals and light winds so feeling quite warm, albeit showers will pop up, mainly in northern and central regions. But during the afternoon cloud and patchy rain from the first frontal system associated with the quite intense low approaching from the south west will effect the south west and south Over Thursday night and through Friday the low continues to curve north east as the jet runs around the upper trough and the the associated fronts will bring heavy rain to most area with thundery outbreaks embedded in the mix accompanied by strengthening winds By Saturday the low is centred over southern Scotland and has become elongated as the subtropical high zone amplify to the west and east.So another day of heavy rain and frequent thundery showers with some intense localised downpours and some strong winds with gales in the south/ By midday Sunday the low is adjacent to Iceland as the subtropical zones continue to amplify so a much better day as the rain and showers become much less significant ant the strong winds abate quite quickly. A chilly day in northern regions

  4. We've had some stunning downpours this afternoon, the sky from the north west became black then it all started, some beautiful cloud formations as well. Looking at the radar the whole system is rotating off the east coast and dragging everything inland and down across the Forth Valley so we are all getting a pasting for a change. I can hear a few rumbles as I type this...excellent..!!! .

  5. Got all the buckets in place moved funiture and rescued small items from the side of house where leak is . Rain on radar is hopefully easing Wondering if bird or something has died and is blocking gutter will look tomorrow but rain was terribly heavy.Gutters are inspected twice a year spring and autumn and are swept out so it is not as if we do not do any maintenance I for one am convinced of climate change and this is just an example of it. These heavy rainfall events are becoming much more frequent. A bit late posted but we were very busy mopping up until about 2.00pm this morning. Thankfully rain eased.A lot of sheds have had water flowing into them. The volume of water was just too much for the drains and we are at the top of the hill so there must be some flooding issues lower down

  8. Popping in for the first time in what feel like forever! Great reading the reports from the Edinburgh storms. I've missed pretty much every single storm this summer due to an increase in working away time. Was back home briefly last weekend and had literally 2 rumbles of thunder all afternoon and 1 heavy shower. Pathetic really Hope everyone's watertight!!!!! 101

  15. I've got the edges of this I think, went suddenly dark indigo, winds gusted, couple minutes of rain, and heard rumbles in the distance but it now looks like it's gone over east by Lauder.

  16. Ms HC reports our moat at home too deep without wellies and my site office near Fyvie has a moat too. Patchy heavy rain all day continuing. Reports of various flood from here across to Dingwall. Not loving it in the least. At the lowest impact, it means some vulnerable folk reluctant to go out, up to higher impacts on roads, rails, drains, residential and business properties getting flooded. Yeah so heavy rain is dramatic to see but beyond that, no thanks. Grump over.

  17. We had the full Monty here around 2pm. Thunder, lightning, torrential rain and gusty wind. Parts of the garden flooded (again). I am sure if you were caught out in that lot you would have experienced some serious pain as it was coming down so hard. Still rumbling away! Love it!

  20. Hi, just a few from the last hour or so here at Spurn Point. Looked as though we were in for a good storm as it approached from the south west but as usual it seemed to weaken and we just had very heavy rain with a few rumbles heard. Cheers Glenn

  25. Very heavy rain through the night here too, glad you got some things sorted @Northernlights following on from the 2010 comments some charts for comparison 7th August 2010 7th August 2019 some others similar 2011 2001 both 2011 and 2001 winters had stormy weather http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/1786150.stm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Bawbag https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-16385049 snow event during the 2001 winter http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/1782704.stm and we all know how snowy 2010 was, so IF it is similar to those years perhaps a mix of a stormy and a snowy winter? Probably means nothing but interesting to compare current conditions to previous years and obviously there will be many other similar years going further back but those are the most recent similar years.

  26. Well, certainly not the most encouraging of 00Z ensembles I've ever seen...But, it is only one run from one model... At least the constant humidity'll be on its way out?

  28. According to the gfs the amplification of the subtropical zones is very transient and by midday Monday a trough has broken away from the lobe over NE Canada and a low is forming in mid Atlantic. It tracks east and merges with our in situ trough and then intensifies as it traverses the UK Tues/Weds courtesy of the jet The ecm wanted nothing to do with this last evening so it will be interesting to see what it comes up with later

  31. FURTHER UPDATE Rain so heavy it has overflowed the valley gutters on the roof of the farmhouse and water is flowing into the house. Going to be a long night rescuing belongings.. The last time this happened was December 2010 when melting snow at Christmas could not get away due to all the ice in the gutters.

  32. Had a little bit of a chase this afternoon. At just after 3pm I headed out and up the M1 in an attempt to get under a developing line of showers moving off the Peak District towards Sheffield. There had already been a few sferics detected across the Buxton area. I pulled off the M1 near to Barlborough and parked up somewhere near Maston Moor to consider my options. I was trying to figure how best to intercept a cell near to Bakewell when suddenly there was a bright flash of lightning out of nowhere and a loud crash of thunder. Within seconds a quite vicious storm arrived and passed overhead with torrential rain, some CG bolts and thunder loud enough I could hear it whilst driving through a torrent. The storm appeared to have developed overhead. I then headed up the M1 and east into a line of storms that were from Matlock to Worksop, coming to a stop just south of Blyth. I was able to stand outside and film as it produced frequent thunder and lightning about a mile to my south. There were no CG's by this point and the lightning seemed mostly high based, but there were still some decent flashes and crisp thunder. The core of the storm was missing me but this meant I was not stuck in the car sheltering from a torrent. Headed home as the storms trundled off at high speed into Lincolnshire but not a bad last minute storm chase.

  37. Three separate warnings for today, Friday and Saturday - madness! I am looking forward to and will cherish a nice cold, crisp, frosty and sunny spell in late October/November - it has been a wild and mostly enjoyable Summer of warm sunshine and convection/thunderstorms here. Have a good day.

  38. No thunder here despite warnings. A few heavy showers but nothing like what had been described by some of you, thankfully. Hope everything is drying out @Northernlights. The guttering on this house struggles with heavy rain, as do the drains, but at least the water stays outside. We have a small courtyard bit at the back that can turn into a paddling pool if the rain is heavy enough. I keep meaning to try to find where the rainwater drain goes as I suspect it's partially blocked somewhere (set of drain rods left in rafters of garage suggest it's been an ongoing problem).

  42. Thunder. Storm. Lightning... Ladies and gentlemen of the Academy, these are things not known to mankind in the South East corner of the UK. Our scientists are working hard to find out what happened... And the consensus is now facing us in this peer reviewed paper by Doctor Grim R. Eaper. It's Climate Change. Yes folks, the Met Office's prediction of the entire Mediterranean climate moving into South East England happened last week. We knew this was going to happen. Just not which day or which month, nor if would be after teatime. Our storms are...no more.
