  1. I think the best way to deal with anyone who is trolling or causing problems is to have a sense of humour and laugh it off. I got some excellent advice in here a week or two back from a load of people in terms of dealing with personally aimed comments etc and it is well worth taking Especially because I think some of the undercurrent going on is connected to that. I have no idea what upset snowlady but hopefully no-one behind the scenes has been giving her a hard time either. The rest of the background gossip is still to do with Coast leaving. There should be closure from all this and everyone should move on and be happy Life is far too short - plus when the sun is shining on a stunning day like today, then all the more reason to try and be happy. Another visit to the garden centre completed earlier this afternoon, and I have another couple of hours coming up to attend to my plants in the garden. Then a roasting joint is going to go into the oven, seasoned with paprika and herbs, to have with some home made chips (and Tams style homemade ketchup ) The Prosecco is going to get iced up for a short time next to my tupperware on this very shelf in the freezer,. I know, but I don't care I'll post this pic yet again as it is an anniversary this week and my snow is 1 year old !! Hope to get those New Forest pony piccies I mentioned before soon - once my friends mobile starts to behave itself and download them to my computer Whilst out along the seafront there were some people dressed like in this pic I took from there in July last year I'm not quite at that stage yet...its feels much more like early Spring right out of the sun and in the shade down here Btw - before I leave for the garden I forgot to say welcome to our newcomer. Sorry Daniel - it's great to have you here posting with us

  2. Whilst many are still harping on about a return to colder unsettled weather, one question? Wasn't the breakdown supposed to happen at the end of this week into next weekend? The models are now showing this for Monday week which shows the breakdown is being pushed further back and unable to get into the 7 day range. Until then there should be caution of the strength of the jet coming out of the state which like the last few months has tended to be shown as too weak/amplified compare to what we end up having. Instead of a sudden change it seems to be more a return to mixed and more average conditions with the cold held up to the north of the UK. Another note of course is the transfer of the main lobe of the vortex from Canada/Greenland to sit across northern Russia and Scandinavia but we seem to keep holding residual energy over Greenland which stops the winds swinging round to the north and instead the Azores high to our south west manages to nose across southern Europe in the reliable/semi reliable. Until we see the complete clearance of the vortex from Greenland then we won't see anything particularly special except for some polar maritime incursions into the north. Might as well add that today the 20C mark was broken, given the winter we have had that is very surprising that we have shot straight into Spring like we have.

  3. A solid week of dry weather for many away from the far NW, and very pleasant with abundant sunshine but also cold nights - shame we couldn't have seen such a spell at some stage during the winter. All models are in agreement of a change come the 17th thanks to the Polar Vortex at long long last lifting out of Canada on its journey to North of Russia, this results in a deep trough forming over Greenland with a direct collision for Scandinavia forcing heights away to our south west and thus exposed to a much cooler unsettled attack from a NW quadrant. Indeed GFS has been very consistent with such a scenario developing over recent days, and ECM is showing a very strong plunge of arctic air by the 19th. Northerlies are more likely to develop between mid March and mid May than at any other time in the year - if this was early winter I wouldn't be so confident in such a pattern change, but I am very confident that a change will occur to much cooler unsettled weather from a northerly quadrant and just like the immediate high pressure outlook, we haven't seen an airstream from between NW-East for months now.. Longer term - increasing signals of a pronounced pattern change from what we have endured in the main since October all thanks to the PV disappearing from Canada, with eyes peeled on development to our NW, N, NE and East as opposed to being transfixed on developments to our west and southwest.

  4. A beautiful weather day here and still relatively warm. Walking back from the pub, I could hear a chorus of birdsong, most prominent of which was the singing of blackbirds; in my opinion the most glorious of our songbirds, even outshining nightingales (we have some of them locally too, but it's not quite their time yet) There's a half moon now too, with Jupiter sitting prominently to its left. I always appreciate the different weather tastes of people and don't criticise people's choices, but the thought that of late snow is something that's not appealing to me now. I know today is too early (and too good) to last, but it was a great taster for weather I hope to see on a prolonged basis in 6 weeks to 2 months time. Feeling good now, especially for a Sunday evening, mostly weather induced.

  6. Hey all I've been watching over you for around a year, I feel that its time to the break ice, this is surprisingly daunting - I'm 17 and have a keen interest in all weather related things. Temp 17.4C clear and sunny outside!

  7. The signs have been there for a few days. It's funny how mild winters are often followed by cold spells in March/April. Probably brought about by the mechanism/pattern of Canadian/Greenland vortex disintegration and its antagonistic response downstream. P.s that control run is a beauty. Heavy snow showers packing in on a NE'ly and feeling bitter (for mid March).

  9. Sounds like a very good idea Steve - and I totally agree with Tamara's comment that it's time to move on from the issues some people have had with past happenings on here and their ongoing attempts to cause problems for some of us, for those of you lucky enough to have escaped the rumours and troublemakers then your well out of it - let's leave it all behind and get this regional forum back to the friendly place it's always been (welcome Daniel) and not let the minority spoil things for the majority of us who just want to talk about the weather and other friendly chat and banter !

  10. What a GORGEOUS weekend:) (Would post emoticon but it's all greyed out on mine, all been a bit strange for a while). Yesterday was Sandbanks, and it was utterly glorious. Some people were in the sea in their swimsuits (hmmm, that was rather brave), there was a slight haze over everything which as the sun got lower in the sky left a lovely pink hue across the landscape. We went for two walks, first along the beach and then down to just sit and watch the chain ferry, bliss. As noted by others, the minute the sun just hinted at setting, the temperature dropped considerably and we needed a few layers. Driving home it felt like the end of a summer day, as you leave feeling all satisfied and weathered, wondering if you've caught a touch of the sun. Surbiton today is just wall-to-wall blue sky and sunshine. Wunderground has recorded 20.2 just down the road from me, don't know if it's accurate. Had a lovely pub lunch and now it's laze around time. The sun worshipping dog has been out topping up his tan with great delight, although managing only a mild scowl for the camera when I try to snap him luxuriating. Welcome to the forum Daniel, keep posting. Don't leave Tom, you're lovely. Sorry SL has left for a while; I've sent a PM saying we'll miss her, hope she's back soon. And as I tell my son if he gets any bad behaviour on his Youtube channel, trolling is the domain of the weak and jealous. Anyway, some pics:) Sandbanks beach: The chain ferry: Poole Harbour at sunset: Sunbathing dog! Flowers flowering:

  11. I'd like to apologise to any member from the region that I "unfriended", in the early hours of this morning, I'm trying to remember who they were, serious senior moment! I'm at work at the moment but will try and correct my profile, when I get home this evening. I was on the point of deregistering my membership, due to a "situation" that began a week or so ago and was simply clearing my profile. I'd simply had enough of all of the problems and wanted to get away for a while. I've since had second thoughts and am not going to let some imbeciles affect my association with the NW Forum, which I've had since 2005. I hope this is ok with the mods but just wanted to apologise, if I caused any offence. Regards, Tom. P.S. Mods I will be posting a report, later.

  12. Beautiful day, as confirmed by so many others, 19oC at home and too nice to be indoors. Decided on a visit to Cliveden, which I love, although Evil SatNav Man was determined to get me there via single track unmade lanes. Made it in the end and it was, as usual, worth the drive. Excuse quality of photos please; when I got my camera out I found the batteries were flat. So this selection was taken with my phone.

  13. Looks like parts of Europe could be headed back into winter around mid-month as Canadian PV disintegrates and troughing drops into the Scandi locale. How much the UK is affected is open to conjecture but potentially a wintry shock in store shortly after mid month point.

  14. ext ecm still wanting to bring much cooler weather to the UK, with the ens showing below average conditions into days 10-15. Looking at the Op tonight, it would seem this trend is gathering momentum. Yes, higher pressure hanging around for a bit longer, the ens were seemingly too eager to have heights shunted S, and the pressure is now shown to stay high until next week. The week coming will be lovely. But it does look like a week... before I have to get my jacket ready! Winter may have one last bite. GEFS in agreement

  16. Thanks for the good wishes people, AS I would have taken it easy on you after all I wouldn't have wanted to be sued :-). Good luck all with the rugby, another of my passions, as over 50 years ago I was playing hooker, it used to great on those cold frosty days to get the first scrum in, really got warm, but I think rugby has altered so much in those intervening years, the professionalism of the game has taken it to another level. Its funny whilst I love rugby and cricket I find both very difficult to watch either live or on tele, I know I shouldn't, but I get to excited and this has spoilt both games as a spectator sport for me, shame but at least I got my football. Just after Christmas the little old lady down the road sadly past away, I mentioned it on here, it was the same day that little Evi my latest grand daughter came into this world, at the wake I meet up with a couple of old school friends, one has give me an old school photo from around 1962, she had kindly enclosed a letter listing the names of all those dim and distant faces from those long forgotten days, there where my two best mates Pete and Graham, whatever happened to them, from the day I left that school, I never saw or heard from either of them, yet we where inseparable, the scraps we got into, the cowboy and injun battles held in Daves dad loft where he stored sweets for his shop, the snow ball fights later that year in that famous winter of 62/3. Those memories came flooding back, but their she was my first girlfriend, the girl who kissed me in the air raid shelter and shared my flying saucers, penny black jacks etc, I must admit I thought I recognise her, but over the years time had alter the colour of her hair, but her smiled gave it away, when she was pointed out to me. That lovely smile, and delicate lips that had dared to kiss mine. Whatever happened to her, did she go off and make a success of her life, have a family and a loving husband, I really hope so, is she reading this and thinking, what plonker writing this old sentimental rubbish, unfortunately nobody knows. I told the wife about those long lost days at our nice meal last night, the long lost summers and winters, some of the scraps we used to get into, including bombing the little train that run around the old chalk pit, that now is Bluewater, but for some reason, the incident in the air raid shelter got omitted from the yarns I spun. Bach then I still had a passion for football and cricket, with my first visit to the valley being some 4 years prior to the photo being taken. Oh well it time I got up, destiny awaits, who know what will happen today, will it be Wembley, or will it be the triple crown, who knows that's the beauty of sport. Have a great day, think of me around 12 today and wish us Addicks luck, as we will need it, let's hope in whatever sport you are watching then the best teams wins, if it ain't us, then it's been a good adventure, I have spent precious time with my boy, doing things we both enjoy, and hopefully making for some of the time I wasn't their during his young days, work can be a pain. Hey ho, win or more than likely lose, we got another game on Wednesday night, when no doubt I won't be able to sleep as the events of that game will be replaying in my head. Weather its dry and very dark out. Funny I just came down to the living room, and their was that photo, and I looked around the room and what a difference 50 years make, the flash colour tele in the corner instead of a radio, the piles of shopping from bluewater a chalk pit those dim a distant days ago, my mum could never have afforded or indeed wanted the wife's Chanel make up, the candles just purchased from Yankee Candles back those all years ago you bought a candle for the simple reason the lights would go out, not now we had to sniff them and agree which one was the nicest smelling, do you know what 50 years ago it was a much simpler and healthier way of living, i enjoyed those long days more than now, but if I could go back would, I don't think so, no wife's, no kids, no grand kids, whilst I have been known to moan about the wife etc, I think I would miss them all to much. Alixandra, I learnt many years ago, that nothing in this world is insignificant and it doesn't matter what your passion is for, the important thing is that you have a passion, my true love other than the wife I add hastily is my work, I been lucky I fell into a job, still wonder how, and I love it, the ability to be able to design from scratch a bespoke piece of plant is I believe a gift which somehow or other has been bestowed on me, the pleasure I get one starting up one of these major plants is an unbelievable high, but it's the pain and countless hours of frustration getting to that point that makes the high so great. Enjoy your planning, of your poly tunnels as it's the planning that ultimately makes your long journey a success, there no chances as in sport where a bounce of ball could alter everything, it's just hard word, design and planning, then in your case, the weather. Enjoy it, as eventually the fruits of your passion will be there for all to see.

  17. Its not a matter of "IF" but "WHEN" the current extremely mild/warm spell comes to an end. After all ,I feel myself that we have had an extended Autumn and today we have skipped Winter and Spring and gone into early Summer So the change modelled by ecm and gfs early next week looks fairly likely, but of course as always details will change , March is a very volatile month so expect the unexpected. we have had a remarkable run of mild weather and mother nature will always right itself, so don't discount any Wintry weather even for the south this month, Ecm and Gfs show "Potential" cold for next week, will this be a very late Wintry spell......We shall see

  20. It peaked at 18.6c in Reigate (source RGS weather station) and has been utterly stunning all day. I am pleased to report the earliest ever recorded appearance and use of a deckchair in a Surrey back garden, just beating the previous record held by the Rev. Arthur Perkins in Dorking, 10 March 1903, shortly before he got embroiled in that rather unpleasant business with the scullery maid and the local branch of the Box Hill Ramblers club, and consequently lost his Rev status. You see, that's the sort of fantastic statistic you can get only on our regional thread (mainly because the same sort of intellectual rigour is not applied here as it would be to, say, those folk over at the Guinness Book of etc..) 21. Eh? I'll believe this when I see it- sounds like the kind of thing I've been hearing all winter. There has been a lot of phantom cold this winter that has apparently 'been just out of range'.

  23. I'm intrigued as to the rumblings of discontent on the forum. I know we all have our 'off' days, but I've not really seen anything here (in this particular thread) that's made me think all is not well, apart from the said murmurings. Maybe it's all going on with PM's, or maybe ignorance is bliss in my case? Off to the pub now. I think we should organise some sort of Spring meet up,maybe south of the river this time?

  24. Morning all! Dry, sunny and 10.5c here already. What a lovely read back this morning. I love hearing all the nostalgic posts especially when they are written as eloquently as they are here. I can almost smell the grass and I'm imagining myself in the pavillion making cucumber sandwiches. It has brought back a rush of memories for myself, but I can't wax as lyrical as you guys so I shall just enjoy them in my head. Today I plan some gardening, because of the glorious weather and also some baking because my youngest asked to do that today. Otherwise nothing much planned. Happy birthday today to Planet Thanet. Have a good one. And everyone else, have a great day.

  25. A large number of GEFS 00z perturbations keep the anticyclonic spell more or less intact across southern uk with the high becoming centred to the southwest of the BI with any unsettled weather tending to brush across the northern third..i.e..scotland & n.ireland. The main thrust of any wintry weather currently looks like being across scandinavia. The week ahead looks superb with high pressure taking complete control..lots of sunshine, light winds and temperatures well above the seasonal average by day but under clear skies overnight, soon turning chilly with widespread slight frosts and a risk of fog patches, probably turning unsettled and windier across the far north west in time for next weekend but for most of us, it look like a prolonged settled outlook with the best of it during the next 5-7 days.

  27. Hello all. I am sitting here in a one bed tiny converted kennel in the middle of a field on a farm in Christchurch. Staying here for a week and have had a wonderful day walking in Bournemouth beach and pier. Sitting in front of a small wood burner watching the sun set and the sky turn from blue to hazy blue as cloud comes over as forecast. Have a great week I am sure I will. SQ1

  28. I am not sure that your comment about the Stratosphere connection is correct. Mind you the 30mb level chart is not available today and I have not looked recently, maybe someone like chio could give a considered comment? To me any change due to the Stratosphere link should already have occurred. The MJO shows a 500mb pattern that is unlike what we currently have, phase 8 (upper trough east of the UK and ridge W/NW), so the forecast for this to continue looks a bit suspect and it also predicted to return almost to the origin. Not a good indicator when it does this I find. As to the 500mb anomaly charts, EC-GFS and NOAA they certainly show nothing of any cold consequence at the moment so they will have to change pretty quickly to support the current synoptic idea of a colder spell developing. Of course the synoptic models have once or twice in the past 3-4 years, maybe 4 or 5 times, predicted this change when the anomaly charts have not. However, the odds are way in favour of the anomaly charts getting the pattern change consistently before the synoptic models do. Of course we shall just have to see if a cold snap, quite possible on the anoamly charts occurs or whether a cold spell, not show yet on them, develops. Neverthe less UK Met have obviously spotted something in their changed longer outlooks.

  29. Well its been really nice here... the cats are ecstatic and so am I as it's the first day for months I haven't had to change their cat litter trays (maybe too much information, but by the end of winter it's the sort of daily chore that just does your head in)... They're doing their 'businesses' outside again!!!! YAY Hasn't been exactly peaceful though as our lane has been on the route of a cycle race and every time one of them goes past, the dogs woof woof - that must be all they hear - a succession of houses with a dog in it barking. I've got my lovely white Bob Dylan T-shirt on and some nice Rosa Mosa sandals I picked up in a sale a few months ago and haven't been able to wear... yes I know - very superficial, but today I feel like doing SA and just enjoying myself, I'll start the gardening tomorrow.

  31. The relatively warm and dry weather continues in the reliable on the GFS 12z The cold has been downgraded from the 6z run at day 10, becoming cooler though but not cold enough for snow. UKMO at day 6 has high pressure in charge. ECM will be interesting tonight, does it get cooler and unsettled like the GFS, or does it stick with the high pressure?
    6 points
  32. True, but the ensembles also show quite some disagreement on just how much of the UK will see a cold plunge, if at all. At the moment, I agree with the fact a cooler NW'erly flow looks increasingly likely from mid-month, however there are a few options that I am seeing looking at today's GFS ensemble charts: Cold weather to our East and kept away into Europe courtesy of too much Azores high influence, staying milder by day, colder at night with settled weather over most of the UK - similar to what we might see this week, but a tad cooler. Glancing cold snap over the UK briefly, before getting pushed away by the Azores high leaving us in a bit of a N/S split (cooler and wetter N, drier and milder S). The further NE you are, the more likely of some wintry showers in the cold snap. Cool trough influence returning - probably cool and wet further South, perhaps some wintry stuff over hills and mountains the further North you are. Cold plunge from the North with wintry showers for many with a higher likelihood of snow the further North you are. This is due to a more mid-atlantic positioning of the High that gradually pushes North towards Greenland. The key seems to be what happens to the High pressure around the t+200 mark onwards - most options keep it more flat and pushing towards the UK, not allowing much cold to reach us. However there are some that do have a mid-Atlantic ridge which allows more substantial cold weather to push from the North. So if the High pressure stays West enough, we could see some winter weather just as Spring started to get under-way...how convenient! Still...a while off yet with too much uncertainty on the most likely outcome. Time to enjoy the Sun before I return to bathing under fluorescent light in the office for another week!

  33. So sad to learn that whatever rumbles have been going on, continue to do so, albeit underground. Like Steve I have been mostly oblivious, and hopefully it will continue that way. Sometimes I think I must be in my own little world, you are all, however, most welcome here. It can be blissfully peaceful here most times. I've had a glorious morning baking and gardening, followed a bike ride out to Willian which ended in a broken bike and walk part of the way home. Oh well, such is life.

  43. Evening all A grey start to the day soon gave way to charcoal blue smudges and then, as the under 11s football team battled to a fine draw against the league leaders, to proper early spring sunshine. The football ground is shared with the cricket club and on arriving this morning there was a small tractor pulling a heavy roller across the pitch and the smell was in the air of cut grass and freshly painted sightscreens. I have never had such a sense of new dawning spring than I had today. Before the match and after I have been sorting out the garden furniture, 8 hardwood chairs and a large-ish table, all left out, and all by now covered in mildew as a result of a mild and ludicrously wet season. Cleaning each overly complicated chair took an age but it felt like I was scrubbing away the dank gloom, the winter, the miserable dark green bloom that had lived and crept across everything as the rain refused to let up. Once each chair was free of its green coat I left them in the surprisingly warm sun and went out with youngest plus dog for a good 2 hour walk through the Surrey hills. Got back to find the chairs bleached almost white and warm to the touch, ready to be oiled with an old cloth that smelt of cricket bats, sheds and the past. Finished up as it was almost dark, youngest still playing on the birthday present not until today put up Crazy Catch, me in a T-Shirt, the faintest hint of the stars just coming out to join the half-moon that had been showing some of its face for an hour beforehand. Fish and chips for our now 17 year old's 17th birthday today - picked him up from the station after he'd been out and saw him give a hug and a kiss to his girlfriend as they said goodbye - days of wonder and hope. Looks like another lovely day could be on the cards tomorrow, hope you all enjoy it AS

He spent all afternoon searching the loft for his bat, pads and cricket sweater and eventually found them in a tin trunk.
