Early winter - models, teleconnections and nowcasting
knocker replied to Paul's topic in Weather Discussion - Winter
Still major differences between the ext GEFS and EPS vis the upstream and Arctic profiles so this still needs to be resolved. One thing that is similar is the strong westerly upper flow exiting the eastern seaboard south of the vortex extension. This backs sharply in the vicinity of the UK, courtesy of the European ridge which is now extending into the Arctic Some downwelling? -
Heights rising around Svalbard.....always a good sign for coldies in wedge scenarios .......next few runs will show the direction of travel for the mid term ....don’t rule out some surprises as the trough to our sw lifts out in the 5/6 day period .... maybe a narrow snow line somewhere across the U.K.

Mild and wet weather has always been the prevailing winter weather type here though, even 50 years ago. Same goes for summer - we have an oceanic/temperate climate, not a continental one, so mild/average summers are the most common....and the cold winter/warm summer duo is almost unheard of. But hey, that's what makes us obsessed with the weather in this country, the 'what if' factor is huge here and makes the chase all the more fun. -

The theme from the ecm next week is initially similar to the gfs but the energy quickly gains the upper hand leading to more cyclonic wet and windy weather

NOAA satellite images decoded. Daily images.
BurntFishTrousers posted a topic in Weather Discussion - Winter,
Recently posted in the Hurricane Lorenzo thread some NOAA satellite images I was able to receive with a decent 137Mhz antenna and some decoding software. People were doing this sort of thing way back 15-20 years ago, but you don't see many images posted nowadays. It's still quite cool!-
