Chixulub fishing port, site of the mass extinction

mackerel sky

Chixulub Port was the centre of the metorite impact causing the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period. Popular with Canadian tourists in winter and wealthy types from the nearby city of Merida, escaping the heat (and watersports - wind sailing, kite surfing), it's an otherwise a quiet, rather run down place, but very friendly. Taken early February 2005. In the distance you can see Progesso Pier (the longest in the world) and an American Cruise liner turning up to experience the charms of the Yucatan for an hour or so before they clear off again after buying some tat, for their all inclusive experience.
