Huer's watch-house

knocker

It is possible that the quaint coastguard lookout and daymark, familiar to everyone on top of the cliff at Portreath, was originally the Huer’s watch-house as it was built before 1814. The“ Huer “ was the person who immediately gave the alarm to the people in the harbour below by crying “Hevva !”, whenever a school of fish had been sighted. His watch-house or Huer’s house was situated somewhere above the harbour.
