Near Esklets - the source of the Esk

Looking downstream towards the North Sea.

The Esk meets the sea at Whitby, in the past ice frequently cut off the natural drainage forming a lake which drained to the south via Newtondale and at one stage to the north through Commondale and Kildale - when it became a tributary of the Tees.

Both these old channels were utilised by railway builders as easier routes through the moors, which rise to just short of 1500 feet
