Controlled burning of the heather
An essential management tool which re-invigorates old woody heather and encourages seedlings to grow in the bare patches created.
Heather seeds lie dormant for long periods and a brief fire breaks the dormancy.
They burn numerous small patches as the intention is to create a mosaic of heather at different ages in a small area.
The aim is to burn each area around once in 15 years.
