Greedy B*stards

This year is the first year we have had to book a holiday during school holidays.

We are going to the Isle of Wight (my favourite haven in the world.... well, in the affordable world). Anyway. Last year, we went in June for 1 week, and it cost (board and ferry ride) £400 for all 3 of us. This year, its costing £700. The reason? We are limited to going in school holidays.

An hour's ferry ride (no doubt packed to the rafters without a seat) is costing us £150 alone. Thats without the petrol to drive to Southampton - so we are already talking £200 just to get there. Does fuel go up during August? No. The place we are staying (although a different place from last year) is costing £200 more for the week. The reason? To fleece hard working parents who they know are limited to go during certain months or weeks of the year.

I knew we would have to pay extra to stay somewhere - thats the same home or abroad. But the ferry has annoyed me big time. If Emily could bloody swim, I'd bung a pair of arm bands on her and we would swim there!

Still, all the same, I am looking forward to a week where all 3 of us can relax.... but remind me next year to book somewhere where we can just drive and not get fleeced by a greedy ferry company.

Anyway, after such a miserable, humpy blog, I am pleased to announce that Emily has been presented at school with the 'citizen of the week' award for 'her good attidude towards learning and people'. I just pray she doesnt get in with the wrong crown the older she gets <_<

Well done to her :) .

This topic of taking children away during school term was on the news today. I can see it from both sides of the fence. Children do miss out on learning when they're taken out of school but, since leaving the TA job, I fully appreciate why parents choose to holiday in school time.

You are entitled to take Emily out of school for 10 days holiday each year during school terms - provided you get the Headteacher's permission. You will not get these fines they're talking about if you keep to 10 days with the Head's permission.

Of course, if it's entirely your decision to take holiday's only when school's out, then that is to be applauded in light of the financial difference.

I know exactly how you feel. My son is doing sats so isnt allowed any time out so we are having same problem, they make all these laws about what we as parents can and cant do its a pity someone doesnt do the same to the airports ferries and hotels they are like vultures circling because they know we have no option it is so annoying.:angry: Glad your daughter cheered you up with her achievement.

Why are you going from southampton? I only ask cos I live in Lymington and the ferrys go from here and take 20 minutes to get to Yarmouth...dunno if they are cheaper but Lymington is only 17 miles from southampton - admittedly through the new forest which can be crowded in the hols but its still beautiful! I guess you have booked now but it's worth thinking about in the future? We love the island too and hate the fact that it is so expensive to get there..we can see it from the hill behind our house!!

Actually, I got it wrong - its Portsmouth we are going from! No idea why - I left Mr Raven in charge of booking the tickets..
