Winter Forecast...

Winter Approaches..

With the first signs of a cold snap on the forecasting models today, and the first sign of a frenzy building in the model discussion thread, it's clear to see that Winter is most definitely not far off!! To mark this fact, a number of new features will be going live on Netweather over the next couple of weeks. Firstly the Christmas forecast will be making it's comeback for 2010 this week, and that in turn will bring the full return of the Winter area for another year. At the same time Netweat

What's this group thing all about?

As you may have seen in this announcement, there have been some changes made to the netweather forum, including the addition of new community forums and groups. We're pretty excited about the possibilities and opportunities that this brings for the community, and already a few groups have been started, which you can take a look at here All groups are free

What Have We Been Up To?

It's been a little while since the last update on our blog (must do better!), so I thought now would be a good time to give an update on what we've been up to behind the scenes, and some info on what we've got planned as we close out the summer and move toward autumn and winter. The main thing we've been working on is a move to new servers, which barring a few bits and pieces is now complete. You may remember we also moved to new servers last year but unfortunately it

We're On The Move!

After several years with our current server hosts (Rackspace), we're on the move to a new company and brand new server setup which will suit us much better and give allow us a lot more flexibility as we continue to grow (at an increasingly rapid rate of knots!). Our new servers at Peer 1 have gone live today and we have already begun the process of migrating everything over to them with the aim to complete the move sometime in May. The main part of this process will be totally behind the

We Made It!

After weeks of work and a disastrous failed attempt earlier this week, this morning we finally moved Netweather onto it's new servers. We have a few more bits and pieces to move over tomorrow, but the bulk of the work is done and so far (touch wood) there have been no major issues. Once we have finished up we'll be on a solid, future proofed setup and that means we can finally concentrate on the good stuff - ie bringing new features and improvements to the site.. Paul

Video On Netweather

As you may have seen, we've been working hard in recent weeks (and months) to start bringing video items to Netweather. We've now started to push more content through, and have setup several channels (and with more to come), all accessible from the video player homepage. Amongst the channels currently you can catch up on the latest forecasts from Michael Fish, as well as the netweather forecast team, along with weather from a

V6 Radar + Atd Lightning On The Way

It's been a while since we had any major news about the radar, so I thought today would be a good time to share some with you.. In short, although the V5 version of the radar is still fairly new and in it's final beta phase, we've decided to jump straight on to V6 and are currently working hard to put that in place. The new system will use the same mapping and zooms as V5 but will use newer technology to allow us to bring a number of new features - including many of the most requested ones f

The Upcoming Winter, Four Experts Come Together..

Next Tuesday, in a top secret location (kind of!), four top long range forecasting experts will be meeting to discuss the prospects for the upcoming winter. The four are John Holmes, Brickfielder, Glacier Point and Steve Murr, and they will be trying to thrash out how they feel the winter will pan out and going over many of the key drivers they believe will play a part. With four such respected and knowledgeable people in the same room, the discussion is sure to be informative, educational a

The summer, one word to sum it up?

We'd like to know how you viewed this summer, and as a simple and measureable way of summing it up, we thought we'd make a quick poll! Please place your vote! It appears that we can't allow guests to vote in polls on this system at the moment - sorry about that! But if any guests would like to cast their vote, please just make a comment with the word you would like to vote for and we'll add it to the results

The Homepage

It's been planned for a little while and today at last I started putting together the new look homepage for Netweather. We have a number of new and revamped items planned for the homepage, including a new alerts system, and a number of other things we'll talk more about in due course. Question is though, what would you like to see on there and what items do you like and dislike about the current homepage? Please let me know - your ideas will certainly be taken on board. Look forward to h

The Big Switchover...

As you may know, we've been planning and working on a move to new servers for a little while now, and whilst the forum is already on our new setup the rest of the site is still on the old one. Next week will see the big change occur though with all parts of Netweather moved to the new servers, they're already running and live in the background so the changeover should be a seamless one if all goes to plan. The changeover should take place on Tuesday or Wednesday, so keep an eye out to see if

Server Move - Update

Thought I'd post a quick update to let everyone know what's happening with the server move... Currently we're still in the process of migrating everything over to our new servers, but we're into the final stages of that with just one or two items remaining, from there it's a matter of testing everything thoroughly before making the switch. The current (unofficial!) date for the move to be completed is a week today - Wednesday 12th May, but stay tuned for any changes to this. On the da

Rain Watch - 6th August

As has been forecast for the last few days, we're seeing some really heavy rain moving up through Northern England and into Scotland today, already there are reports of flooding according to the BBC: http://bbc.in/p1HDy3 And you can see why - this is the 12 hour accumulated rainfall taken from the radar: And this is the position of the rainfall as I type this update: The

Promoting your community groups

Following the successful launch of the community groups with a number of new groups already up and running, a lot of people have been asking how best to let the other members know about their new groups, so I thought I'd share some ideas. Firstly, we've made a change to the profile system, so if you visit my controls

Preparing For Winter!

Lots of work going on behind the scenes here at Netweather HQ at the moment to prepare for the Winter season. Obviously with Winter comes additional traffic to the site, so we're adding another server to the cluster currently (taking us up to 6 servers now), and because of the changes we made to our setup earlier in the Summer we'll be able to add further servers to cope with demand at relatively short notice throughout. We've also got a packed out development schedule with new additions a

Popups - Aaaarrggghhhhh

Hi all, just a quick apology for you - it appears that over the last few days one of the ad companies we deal with (or should I say used to deal with) have, without our knowledge been putting a sneaky popup onto the site when one of their banners shows. The popup was nothing malicious or anything, but as we have a no popup policy on netweather (and always will have), it's obviously not on!! As soon as we found out about this last night we pulled all of their ads, and following on from discus

New NMM Hi-Res Forecast Model For The UK

It's taken time, effort and server upgrades to get this running, but finally we have a new Hi-Res forecast model for the UK here on Netweather. The model is called the NMM, it is used operationally by the NCEP in the USA and is known as a mesoscale model - which means it is high enough resolution to pick out small more localised weather features that lower resolution models will miss. At the current time the Netweather NMM model is running at a resolution of 12km (0.09 degrees), which if

Netweather Blog Alps Ski And Weather Forecast 9th March

Summary The weather across the Alps continues to be mild for the most parts with spring skiing conditions, there has been some fresh snow but this is largely confined to higher resorts. Further down resorts have been losing their snow cover, and slopes are seeing the snow base thin and turn slushy, however snow levels are still quite good after heavy snow earlier in the winter, Next week is looking mostly dry and turning milder, so the best of the skiing conditions in the morning.
