Frustrated - Part II

It's been snowing here pretty solidly since about 10pm yesterday, but it's the snow equivalent of drizzle - snizzle! As such we've had an additional dusting, but there has been a bit of a melt as well. In previous winters I reckon we've done better here than in most other parts of the country, so I suppose it's time to share the love.

Except it's not....I want it all for myself!!!

Frustrated!

It seems that because the snow showers today are coming from a SSE direction, the N. York Moors are gobbling up the snow before it gets to us! Watching the radar is driving me mental! I know that the front should be over us by mid-evening but I expected to have had something before now!

Don't forget about the wildlife or pets!

OK, so I'm as good at blogging as keeping a diary! First blog in, what, 6 years!!

I had become an infrequent poster on the forum over the last 3 or 4 years (work and other things) but this winter has really captured my imagination again. Given how things are shaping up we could be in for a cold spell to surpass whatever has been thrown at us over the last 3 years!

With all the fun of the ice days and snow it is often easy to lose sight of the potential impact on the wildlife. Birds always suffer in cold weather so make sure you put out fruit and nuts and some fresh unfrozen water. Similarly, if like me you have a cat who spends most of their time outdoors make sure they can get to a place that is sheltered.

New Signature

I made a new signature for my profile today. I wonder if anyone will recognise it. I would have thougt that there will be someone out there who will go.."oh yeah, that's from.....!"

Sick....

I'm feeling very unwell this evening  ! I know it's not a flu as I've had the flu and I thought I was dying!! No, this is just a cold but being a fella I'm milking it for all it's worth ! Mrs A-M is on Lemsip and hot-water bottle duty but i'll be glad when I'm feeling better. Just now I've got a sore head, aches all over and alternating between feeling cold and hot - a typical cold! I wonder if it's as a result of the weather !

End Of Summer

It's only the 23rd of August and I know that there is still the chance of warm weather all the way until the end of September but it don't look good! Absolutely no sign of a HP coming close to us, potential for some ex TS's, a very Southerly Jet and ITCZ (which may bode well for the Winter) and some chilly nights ahead. Still, it's been a fairly good summer, although it was too hot in July. It didn't help that I was in London during the height of it and travelling the underground was a smelly, sticky experience. There was a couple of days where I had all 4 fans in my house running; perhaps I should invest in a wee air conditioning unit if GW is going to affect us like the 'experts' say it will. Personally it was a nice summer, me and the family were in France the last 2 weeks of June which, again, was hot and sticky, I took Mrs A-M to London as I said before to see a West End show (Chicago - it was excellent), went to see my folks up in Perth and had various days out. On the down side, we were supposed to go to Leeds festival this weekend but we couldn't get child cover so had to sell our tickets, mind you, looking at the forecast perhaps it was a small blessing. Overall, not the best summer but by no means the worst!

Winter Prospects

Well it's been ages since In blogged but with winter approaching (sort of), I feel compelled to write my thoughts on the coming season. I can see August and September being just milder than average, October could end up very warm whereas November may be very cold. Now to winter: because of carinthian and his 'Barents Sea cold pool', an early cold pool developing above the Arctic circle, a potential weak El Nino with accompanying southerly tracking Jet coming out the US leading to a -ve NAO this could be the one we have been waiting for! The warmer than usual N.Sea could be a blessing as it could allow for LOTS of snow!! Early days but I predict at least 1 month with a CET below 3c, also look for a '91 type event! Fingers crossed!!

My Brother

Iam happy today <_< ! My brother is coming to visit me later on. I haven't seen him since March 2004! Why so long? He is a medic in the army and has been stationed in Iraq for most of the time, and when not in Iraq he has been in Germany or Canada. The times that he has had leave I have been on holiday (twice to France and once to Greece). He is 6 years younger than me but have always been close. He's also bringing his fiancee of 2 years (who I have yet to meet). Looking forward to a weekend of reminiscence!!

This Is Driving Me Insane

I must say that model watching, generally an enjoyable experience, has had me at my wits end over the last week or so! It is still enjoyable but often the tension or expectation is beyond endurance, particularly when I have had it in my head that we have probably only one more shot this winter at something very cold. At the start of the winter I, like many others, had high hopes for a cold one, particularly after the cold end to November. Now while this winter has been interesting with a lot of frosts and some snowfall, overall it has been a catalogue of near misses and not quites. Over the coming week or so the teleconnections MAY fall into line, and the cold pool over Europe MAY expand and move closer and the block MAY start to move into the correct position for some Siberian air to head our way and the Greenland high MAY form....but then again, these things might not happen. There can be no argument that the potential for a very cold spell, perhaps the coldest since 1991, is there, but at the moment that's all it is; potential. And therein lies the frustration in model watching. Just like last year the GFS is showing us some really juicy set ups, always just out of the reliable timescale, and as soon as it gets within 5 or 6 days it disappears. This current set up has all the right ingredients and taking things to an entirely non-scientific level we are LONG overdue for a good cold shot, but that theory counts for nothing. I do believe that we will get something cold later in the month and into February but that could be hope talking, especially as the last month of winter is just around the corner. If, as most people on here fear, it doesn't happen, I feel that I shall remember this winter as 'the Big Disappointment', so near and yet.......

Where Is The Sun?

Hi there. I just posted in the forum and in it I mentioned that I am yet to see the sun at all in 2006! Oddly, there have been 3 frosts in that time, indicating that the anticyclonic gloom recedes at night, only to return in the morning. I'm starting to miss the sunshine now. On a more positive note, I started back at University today (which is where I am currently) and I am happy to be back doing some work after vegetating over the festive season.

Lots Of Uncertainty

In the middle of the second Easterly in as many weeks I am looking forward to next week and beyond. Currently the models are pointing at a zonal spell of weather but hope in the shape of some LRF's are pointing at mid month for a prolonged cold spell, I am a little dubious. If I am wrong then I will gladly eat my words, and as I am in the middle of my diet I will, quite frankly, eat anything at the moment. Sooo hungry! On another topic, I slept in this morning ! I was supposed to be up at 7.45 to take mini A-M to nursery but I slept through the alarm and none of us woke up (2 x daughters included, Mrs A-M already at work) until 9.03!! Shocking! Lots of late nights to blame as I'm still on holiday until Monday. At least I got a bonus morning with the kids, they're now out with their Auntie.

New Year, New Weather?

Happy New Year to one and all! I had a good night last night, me and Mrs A-M drank 2, thats right 2, bottles of champagne between us, very tasty. I'm suffering a little today but I'll soldier on. What will 2006 bring to us? The title of this entry is a little misleading as the new weather, IMO, started last February with the PFJ smashing into the pole. I also think that cooling will now be inevitable as I think there will be greater snowfall throughout Eurasia and North America this winter, as a result the albedo level will be increased, leading to a slightly cooler year, followed by another snowy winter with a lot of snow and so on.... Anyhoo, my resolution this year is to lose weight. After the festive period I am now a portly 15st 10lb which is shocking! My aim is to be around 13st 7lb by summer; time will tell.

Long Time To Wait

It's been a while since my last blog entry. Mostly because you had to pay for it! Well what a year 2005 has been, good snow in late February, very hot in June/July (especially as I was in France and it hit 38c!!), one cracking thunderstorm in August at teatime when in went pitch black and there was loads of lightning, very mild Autumn until mid November when it got cold and it's been cold since then. Only 2 days ago the temp got no higher than -4.0c which was apparently the coldest day here since 1997. So far this winter I have measured about 9cm in total snowfall with a max depth of 8cm and as we move into 2006 what's going to happen? I reckon (hope) that we will get another couple of easterlies this winter with one lasting a good 2 weeks, more snow than last year and overall the coldest winter since 95/96. Spring will be cooler than average but not by much and I think summer will be a little warmer than average. Hopefully the hurricane season will be less active this year and I expect Mount St Helens to erupt fairly violently this year. Time will tell.

Sunshine!!

At approximately 13:30 today the sunshine came back out! That was the first I had seen of the sun since about last Sunday morning. I think I was starting to get S.A.D. Reading some of the threads today I noticed a lot of people are taking this potential cold snap as a foregone conclusion; I am trying to be more circumspect. If the charts still show the same on Tuesday then I will allow myself to get excited.

Optimism

I've been away from my computer for a couple of days now so I was interested to see what, if anything, had changed. Not much really. Possibilities for a cold snap are increasing slightly but I am still trying to be cautious. Difficult though as I am more hopeful than I have been for ages.

Frustrating!!

I reckon if it wasn't for the North Sea being warmer than usual we would have at least 6 inches of snow here. The temp has been between 1.8c and 2.9c since Sunday morning and in that time we have had a lot of RAIN - yes, rain!! Not a bit of snow. If it was just 0.5c lower we would have had a fairly respectable snowfall. The rest of this month is looking like being more of the same. Oh well, there's always February.

First Day

Blogs eh? Well what a frustrating day today. Temps no higher than 2.9c but nothing but rain, sleet and hail and not one flake of snow. I remain patient though, i'm willing to wait 8/9 days (if Steve Murrs prediction comes off). Its now 19:15 and I'm logging off for now. Hoping for a snow shower or two tonight but I wont hold my breath

Boring!

This current spell of weather is the meteorological equivalent of beige. Whisper it quietly but I would even welcome some zonality! I'm keeping my eyes fixed on next week for a potential cold spell but I am hard pressed to find any positivity. Must remind myself there is still 5/6 weeks left of winter.

Lots Of Rain

Now I haven't been watching the weather today but I sure as hell wasn't expecting this much rain today. It has not stopped since about 1pm. Very wet and cold. Miserable you might say.
