There was again some snow at the start of the week, but milder temperatures over recent days has led to a thaw and the best conditions over the higher slopes. However conditions are set to improve over the weekend with snow and colder temperatures pushing in from the North West. this week is set to be generally cold and turning very cold by the mid part of next week.

What a wintry week! Not especially cold for West Wales, surprisingly, with all the snow about, here at Lampeter there were no 'Ice days' and no hard frosts or windscreens to scrape. It was a very overcast spell, the cloud blanket preventing temperatures from falling below -4c here. However the 9cm s

There were some snowfalls at the start of the week, and together with the sunshine of recent days, this has led to some great skiing conditions over the past few days. This fine weather should continue tomorrow but turning much milder next week with a thaw, but good skiing conditions are expected in any sunshine , best conditions as ever in these conditions in the morning.
There's usually a clash of "rights" when it comes to people being slow, say, at the front of a queue in a supermarket. There's the right of the people at the front to be leisurely and not be in a rush, vs. the right of the people behind to be able to progress in the queue without being heavily delayed.
The need for consideration towards others works both ways and both sides can be guilty of being inconsiderate. We know about the impatient people who put pressure on those in front of them to
It's been snowing here pretty solidly since about 10pm yesterday, but it's the snow equivalent of drizzle - snizzle! As such we've had an additional dusting, but there has been a bit of a melt as well. In previous winters I reckon we've done better here than in most other parts of the country, so I suppose it's time to share the love.
Except it's not....I want it all for myself!!!

The snows duly arrived on Friday, for most of us. Carmarthen and some other spots somehow remained green oases in a white West Wales landscape, neighbouring Pembrokshire, Llanelli and all surrounding hills received at least a cm or so. Depths of snow heard about incude: Llanwnnen 9cm, Llanelli 4cm, Aberyst
It seems that because the snow showers today are coming from a SSE direction, the N. York Moors are gobbling up the snow before it gets to us! Watching the radar is driving me mental! I know that the front should be over us by mid-evening but I expected to have had something before now!

The past week has been very cold over much of Europe and there has been fresh snow over the Alps over this period. However with winds coming from a SW direction over the weekend, tuning a bit milder at least for a time. However turning back colder again for the start-middle part of next week.

OK, so I'm as good at blogging as keeping a diary! First blog in, what, 6 years!!
I had become an infrequent poster on the forum over the last 3 or 4 years (work and other things) but this winter has really captured my imagination again. Given how things are shaping up we could be in for a cold spell to surpass whatever has been thrown at us over the last 3 years!
With all the fun of the ice days and snow it is often easy to lose sight of the potential impact on the wildlife. Bird

Warwickshire had around an inch of snow on Monday, but so far this Winter the snow has missed West Wales, bar a few flurries. A weak front over the Irish Sea is giving some very light snow

The anticipated change to colder weather has happened and looks set to last throughout the coming week. Another relatively dry week gone, especially for the Midlands, just 2mm falling at Coventry, and merely 11mm here, near Lampeter, a chance for the rivers to drop to more normal levels and the fields to dry out somewhat. After the Christmas break, this is the first forecast in 2013 and there will be a weekly forecast right through until April. Many times over recent years we have seen a very good start to the season, but things turning worse as we move into the new year. Will this happen this year. Very much an east west split this week, mild over western parts, but much colder for Eastern parts, with Austria seeing the best of the cold weather and the snow this week. Definitely a week to be on the slopes, and n
In 2011 I done a experiment to see how the models perform in 2012 I done the same thing. The experiment took place during September and October. Basically how it works fairly they all make a forecast on the same day at the same time (12z) then when the actual time comes I check the actual weather conditions and see how accurate they were. The models faced tough challenges mainly in September when Hurricane Nadine made the models struggle. The points system rewards the models more points the furt

Like many forecasts, my forecast for December started off well then veered rather wide of the mark.
Changeable and generally cold, some snowfalls
During December 2012, the jet stream will be tracking from north-west to south-east over the eastern North Atlantic and Europe for most of the month, and this will enable a succession of northerly and north-easterly outbreaks to affect the British Isles. It won't be as intensely cold as December 2010 was, but it will be cold enough for sno
1st January - New Year's Eve: Happy new year! At midnight, the first moments of the new year was cold and chilly westerly breeze. There was a fantastic moon over Glasgow but gradually cloud cover increased from approching showers from the west and the moon was covered. You could see the lanterns moving in same direction as the clouds and also very quickly too. Then it started to rain. Looking at the car there was some sleety stuff or rain with a wintry element landing on the cars and during a he

The year started off with a bang as the country was battered in the early hours of the 3rd January thanks to a sting jet. There was widespread damage and distruption and at Blackford Hill, Edinburgh where there was a gust of 102mph - the storm was judged to have been the worst in 13 years.

The floods in the Midlands receded through the past week, as rainfall lessened, however there was still a substantial 40mm during the past week at Rugby. West Wales has had another very wet week with just over 3 inches (77mm) falling back home at Llanwnnen. All this rain has made 2012 one of the wettest years on record, Llanwnnen needs 2 inches

Given the expected continuation of a –NAO, and –AO I would not bet against colder interludes, in the form of brief northerlys, as we progress through the xmas period (something which has shown around xmas day on the latest model runs). I do not see great support for something prolonged
Well it's that time of year again so I'd like to wish everyone on NW a very Merry Christmas. Unfortunately, yours truly will be working (on day watch at Shetland Coastguard) but hopefully we will be quiet, especially as the weather looks like it well be relatively quiet up here after the storms of the past few days! Might even see some of the white stuff on Boxing Day!
Anyhoo, hope you all have a wonderful Christmas
