Keep that brolly nearby

Blustery with sunshine or calmer with hefty downpours. The unsettled theme continues but with a good deal of fine weather for the SE.

Issued: 3rd August 2017 09:08

There has been quite a strange muggy feeling in the air, warm but tinged with dampness so you feel a bit unsure if you are cold or hot. Low pressure has edged over Scotland resulting in calm conditions and hefty showers in the north and a brisk SW wind blowing over much of England and Wales. Temperatures will quickly reach 17 to 19C this morning. Swirling around this low pressure are clusters and bands of showers. NW England is getting clobbered this morning, there have been hefty downpours for the Central Belt and more feeding into Wales from the Irish Sea. Yesterday’s rain cleared away to the Low Countries overnight with the occluding front taking the northern rain to the Northern Isles.

Once again, we are in an unsettled theme, with the risk of showers set against bright, sunny spells. Weather apps are not going to give an accurate picture of timings. There is the risk of showers but don’t hold too much weight if it says rain at 3pm and dry at 4.

Southern and SE Britain won’t have too bad a day. There will be a few showers but many places will stay mostly dry. There will be sunshine and temperatures up to 19 or 20C but it will remain blustery. For the rest of England and Wales there will be more heavy showers this morning but hopefully fewer this afternoon. Coastal Wales will only reach 16C but east of the Pennines it will feel warmer at 21C. the westerly wind over Northern Ireland will pick up this afternoon as heavier showers appear, particularly in the NE. Temperatures will reach the high teens.

There is a fair easterly wind blowing over the Northern Isles this morning but for much of mainland Scotland winds are light and as a result there will be some high rainfall accumulations from these slow-moving showers. There is the risk of hail and thunder too with plenty of surface water and spray on the roads.

Temperatures this afterrnoon

By this evening much of southern Britain will be dry and bright with just the odd shower and still those brisk SW winds. Northern Ireland and northern Britain will still be at risk from hefty showers with a more westerly breeze coming in from the Atlantic.

By Friday the winds will be veering to the NW, bringing a fresher feel. The low pressure centre will be drifting away towards Norway and although there will still be a feed of showers from the west, there won’t be quite as many as today. Western Scotland could see a spell of damp weather which move eastwards but for much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland there will be plenty of fine, sunny weather. It will become warmer for eastern England, into the 20s Celsius but with blustery winds over northern England and southern Scotland. The ingredients for a summer’s day don’t all come together, do they. Fine but windy.

Air pressure and rain Saturday

The weekend

By Saturday we are in-between the low pressure over Scandinavia and the Azores high is building our way. The flow is still showery and fresh off the northern Atlantic but there will be a lot of fine weather for England and Wales. NW England will still get more showers. Scotland and Northern Ireland will see more hefty downpours with the risk of thundery bits too, mixed with bright spells and strong sunshine. The nights will be quite nippy this weekend, noticeably different from last night. Early Sunday there will be plenty of blue skies and sunshine about but alas a weather front approach from the Atlantic, bring rain into Northern Ireland for Sunday afternoon and showery outbarks ahead for western and northern Britain. SE Britain will fair okay with lighter winds, more sunshine and temperatures of about 22C. It’s not full summer heat but it will be a comfortable warmth without the humidity.

By Monday the low pressure looks to have moved right over the UK bringing more rain.
