If it's not raining with you yet, it will be at some point today. already the heaviest rain is clearing Northern Ireland as this band continues its journey eastwards. Brighter behind.
It’s raining it’s pouring… A wet and blustery start this morning for Northern Ireland and western Britain with reports of surface flooding on roads. This band of rain is moving quickly eastwards today, so if you start the day with rain, it will brighten up. However, if you are in eastern Britain and still dry, then rain is on its way.
Low pressure is away to the NW of the UK, throwing its weather fronts ahead and over us. the warm front, warm sector and cold front all rattle through today, so there will be a brighter clearance from the west with sunny spells and showers. The rain will be light and patchy by the time it reaches East Anglia this afternoon but the high ground of western Britain and Northern Ireland could see over an inch of rain today with around 40-50mm for Cumbrian Fells, Welsh mountains or SW Scotland where it is murky and grey.
It will be a blustery day with a fresh SE or southerly wind. This will be strong and gusty for the Western Isles and veer around to the west once the rain band moves through. It will be pretty miserable for the east coast of Scotland this afternoon as the SE wind drives against the coast and the rain falls with heavy bursts inland, over the high ground of northern Scotland.
Temperatures will fluctuate today, with a brief warm spell over eastern England and Kent in the early sunshine. Once the rain clears and the sunshine reappears, temperatures will rise into the high teens and 20 or 21C (70F). East Anglia will have to wait until the rain clears away for a late max. temperature today. With the brisk westerly wind, there could be a few spots getting even warmer to the lee of the Pennines or Peaks.
As the rain clears Kent and reaches the Northern Isles and Caithness, much of the UK will be seeing sunshine, a real change from the spell of wet weather. Through the evening heavy showers will blow across N.Ireland and western Scotland and the Irish Sea. These could include hail and thunder with sharp downpours for NW UK. It will be a cooler night everywhere with the moderate west wind.
This will back to a fresh south-westerly which will drive in lines of showers through Thursday. In between there will be bright or sunny spells, but some spots will see shower after shower with other areas missing most of the rain. Eastern Britain will be the most sheltered from the showers. Temperatures will be in the mid to high teens with the odd low 20 possible. Worth staying out of the breeze and again there could be some hefty showers about.
Even by Friday, the low pressure centre is still lurking to the NW. It will be a bit closer to the UK and throw even more showers over Northern Ireland and Scotland. It will be another blustery day with fresh SW winds for Wales, Ireland and much of England. Temperatures stay low, although the sun is still strong. Eastern Britain could see 20 or 21C once more. It looks like a developing low will heading into SW Britain later on Friday bringing more rain. This would then scoot across southern Britain on Friday night bringing a wet spell for the start of the weekend.
Weekend
There could still be rain from a trailing front over the far south of England to start Saturday, but low confidence on this. We’ll have to see how the little low from the Atlantic forms and moves through. Otherwise many parts should be bright, with sunny spells and again hefty showers whirling off that same low pressure away to the NW. The highest temperatures look to be for SE Britain or eastern Britain, just creeping into the low 20s, so not real summer heat. The brisk SW wind remains and the threat of showers for the NW and more cloud and light rain from the frontal band lurking in the English Channel.
