Sunny Spells and Pleasantly Warm

Plenty of dry and benign weather today for many areas, with pleasant spells of sunshine too.

Issued: 8th July 2017 09:42

We start Saturday with quite a marked variation in temperature. It has been chilly through the Glens and Valley’s of Scotland, along with parts of N England, with a minimum temperature of just 5°C at Shap.  In complete contrast, it has been another warm night across urban areas of S England, with temperatures falling no lower than 19°C at St James’s Park in London. An enjoyable day of weather is on the way for much of the British Isles.

Today

Through the rest of today, it will be mainly dry, with plenty of bright or sunny spells. It is likely that the best of the sunshine will be across parts of the Midlands, E England, N England and S Scotland. While temperatures will be lower than the last few days, given light winds and the sun it will still feel pleasantly warm. Cloud is, however, forecast to increase as Saturday progresses across much of Ireland, Wales, southern and south-western areas of England. The cloud may potentially become thick enough for a few light showers here as the afternoon progresses. At the same time, towards the late afternoon, some wet and windy weather will reach the far north of Scotland, as a weather front approaches.

Further warm and quite humid conditions will continue across the far south and south-east of England. Temperatures around the Home Counties will rise to near 22°C to 25°C. The rest of England and Wales likely to see temperatures around 15°C to 21°C, Scotland and Ireland cooler, temperatures nearer 14°C to 19°C here.

Tonight

Through into Saturday evening and overnight and mainly dry and benign conditions will prevail for many areas of England and Wales. Clear spells and variable cloud are likely, but the cloud still thick enough for some light showers or patchy rain across Wales and SW England, elsewhere dry though. A weather front moving slowly south-east across Scotland will bring some rain here overnight, along with a moderate or fresh W or SW’ly wind.

Temperatures tonight aren’t expected to fall quite as low as last night. This due to the cloudy and wet weather moving south-eastwards across the north. Minimum temperatures around 7C to 11C across Scotland, Ireland and N England, but another warm night for central and southern areas of England, lows here 13C to 17C.

Sunday

Into Sunday and for many regions further predominantly dry conditions will prevail. There’s likely to be more cloud around when compared with Saturday, but bright or sunny spells are still forecasted quite widely across many areas of England and Wales. Some of the best periods of sunshine are, once again, likely across parts of N England through the afternoon. Equally, there is an isolated risk of a few showers breaking across eastern and south-eastern areas of England. These locally heavy if they do, but they will be the exception to the rule. A slow moving weather front will bring a mostly cloudy and damp day though across central and southern areas of Scotland, also into parts of northern and western areas of Ireland as well.

Temperatures on Sunday afternoon will be a few degrees higher than Saturday. So despite more cloud, it will be warmer and quite humid as well, especially across England and Wales. Temperatures here widely ranging between 19C and 24C, but 25C to 27C is likely across SE England. It will be markedly cooler beneath the wet weather across parts of the north and west through the day.

Next Week

Taking a quick look ahead into next week and if you’re hoping for plenty of sunshine, summer temperatures and dry weather, unfortunately, you’re going to be disappointed. Confidence is high now for low pressure and cool conditions to dominate as the week progresses. There are some uncertainties over the details, but low pressure is set to arrive, from the west, early in the week of which will produce a widespread risk of rain and showers at times. Some heavy rain is potentially possible as well, and temperatures will be below the mid-July average. Certainly looking likely that the second week of Wimbledon will be affected by some poor weather, especially when compared with the first week.
