June Monsoon? A Lot Of Rain For Some

Issued: 28th June 2017 08:12
Updated: 28th June 2017 08:37

Sunshine was in short supply across the UK yesterday and many places saw some rain by the evening, it was particularly wet in Suffolk, where 78mm of rain fell at Santon Downham in 24 hours, which is well over a month’s worth of June rainfall. It’s looking a generally cool, gloomy and sometimes wet picture for the rest of this week too, as low pressure hangs around for the rest of the week. It will be wettest across England and Wales on Wednesday, dry and sunny for Scotland, the rain will continue to edge north and west on Thursday, becoming stuck across Scotland before easing and slipping south on Friday. However, the weekend is looking drier and brighter for many, though some rain will pass across Scotland later on Saturday before clearing to sunshine and showers on Sunday, England and Wales mostly dry.

Today

Heavy rain across eastern England yesterday evening has spread steadily north and west across England and Wales overnight, so much of England and Wales has started Wednesday on a cloudy and wet note. With rain falling through much of the night in many places means there is a lot of surface water on the roads which will create some tricky driving conditions – especially where rain is still falling.

Rain will continue to gradually spread north and west through the day – extending into Northern Ireland, with a very wet day for the north Midlands, northern England and parts of Wales, with rain lasting through to the evening here. Brighter weather spreading north across southern counties of England away from SW England where it will probably stay wet. Feeling warm and humid across southern England in any sunny spells, but this warmth and moisture may trigger some heavy and locally thundery downpours – especially south of the M4. Scotland will escape with a mostly dry and bright day with sunny spells, though some rain may creep into the Scottish borders.

With all the cloud and rain, temperatures rather disappointing, especially in comparison to a week ago – when we saw close to 35C in London. Today will likely see a high of 18-19C at best across London and SE England, elsewhere 14-17C at best across south Wales and southern England, 12-13C under the rain across northern England, a rather cool 12-15C across Scotland and N. Ireland, despite the sunshine.

Tonight

So, the rain across northern England and Wales to end today continues to steadily spread north into Scotland tonight as low pressure over the North Sea and associated fronts drift north, though northern Scotland probably remaining dry until later tomorrow morning. Probably remaining cloudy and damp with occasional rain across northern England, Northern Ireland, Irish Sea, West Wales and Cornwall. But for much of the Midlands, southern and eastern England it should turn mostly dry with clear spells once today’s showers fade.

Thursday

Persistent and locally heavy rain spreading north across Scotland on Thursday, accompanied by a strong northeasterly wind, touching gale force through the central belt, so not feeling particularly warm up here. Still cloudy and damp across northern England and N. Ireland with rain extending down across west Wales and SW England, accompanied by a keen northeasterly breeze. But for east Wales, Midlands, southern and eastern England there will be lighter winds with bright or sunny spells, but also some heavy and perhaps thundnery showers developing.

Friday

As low pressure sinks back south, showery rain pulled back south across England and Wales on Friday, drier and brighter conditions following across Scotland, N. Ireland and eventually northern England, but with a cool northerly wind setting in.

Weekend

Drier and brighter weather as we head into the weekend, especially for England and Wales, but not completely dry, with a westerly flow bringing cloud and rain across Scotland, N. Ireland and northern England later on Saturday, but clearing overnight into Sunday morning to a mostly dry and bright day UK wide, bar a few showers in the north and around western coasts.
