Low pressure set to dominate bringing a risk of significant rainfall totals this coming week.
It’s a mainly dry start to Sunday for the majority of the British Isles, but there continue to be weak weather fronts that are bringing some rain in places. Parts of NW England, Wales and SW England, in particular, are experiencing a cloudy and damp start with some rain and drizzle, while showery conditions dominate across Scotland. Some of the best weather to start to the day though is across parts of NE England where plenty of sunshine is present.

Through the course of Sunday morning and into the afternoon much of England and Wales will be cloudy. The weak weather fronts will maintain a risk of some sporadic regions of light rain and drizzle too, perhaps especially so across parts of Wales, the Midlands and SW England. However, after the morning rain across parts of N England, it is expected to be become drier and brighter here, with a fairly pleasant afternoon on the way. A continued mixture of the sunshine and scattered showers will persist across Scotland.
Overall, for late June it’ll be a cool day. Temperatures across Scotland, Ireland and N England will range between 11C and 16C this afternoon. Across Wales and the remainder of England temperatures between 14C and 18C are forecast.
Into this evening and overnight and many areas of the British Isles will become dry. The mostly cloudy and damp conditions across parts of southern and south-eastern parts of England will clear. While a few showers will continue across Scotland emphasis is on a dry night ahead for many. It’ll be a chilly night as well, especially rurally, with temperatures down to just 4C or 5C across some parts of N England and Scotland.
So, we move into next week and emphasis is most certainly on a very unsettled end to June. The month, overall, has been particularly varied. A wet and, for some, windy start to the month was present, this followed by the noticeable period of heat and humidity around and just after mid-month. However, despite uncertainties over the details as the coming week progresses, the month will end with low pressure dominating the weather over all areas.
One area of low pressure will be moving into parts of the West of the UK during the day on Monday. As a result, Ireland will have a wet day with some locally heavy rain at times. It will, however, be a mainly dry across much of England, Wales and Scotland until later in the day. Some bright or sunny spells are forecast, and with light winds, it’ll feel pleasant enough in the sunshine. However, the cloud will steadily increase from the west as this first area of low pressure moves in.
As next week progresses and a particularly complex weather pattern will evolve directly over the UK. Low-pressure areas will end up becoming located over the UK bringing not only persistent rain but also the risk of some heavy and thundery downpours too. It is the details that remain uncertain for now, but if you were hoping for a repeat of last weeks summery weather, then, unfortunately, mostly the opposite will happen as the final week of June progresses.
There is likely to be an increased risk of some severe weather as a result. The combination of the more persistent rain with some possible thundery downpours means that some areas of the UK could well see some significant rainfall totals as the week progresses. The specific areas at risk are, for now at least, uncertain, but parts of central and eastern parts of England, perhaps along with some regions of N England and S Scotland could well be looking at up to 60mm to 70mm or more by the time the end of the week arrives. It does look as though the unsettled conditions will continue into the opening few days of July as well.
As ever we’ll keep you fully up to date as the coming week progresses. However, it looks like it’ll be a good idea to swap the shorts and t-shirts of last week, for brollies and waterproofs this week as a ‘typical’ change in the British summer weather arrives.
