Heat Building Briefly In The South

Yesterday saw a cloudy start across many parts, but eventually many places became bright and breezy away from the north and west where it remained cloudy and showery, though it was on the cool side everywhere, we just about managed 20C in SE England - where the cloud finally broke up in the afternoon.

However, the heat has been building over the Channel in France, and we will see a brief build of this heat and humidity from the near continent across England and Wales before cooling off again by the end of the week. The warm up starting in the SE today and becoming more widespread tomorrow, with temperatures widely reaching the low twenties south of Scotland, perhaps as high as 26 or 27C in the southeast. A cold front moving from the west on Thursday will sweep the heat and humidity away east by Friday, with a return to fresher and breezy conditions with showers for some.

Today

For now, it’s a cloudy start across many areas this morning, with some patchy light rain in the north and west, while southern-most counties of England along with Essex and Suffolk are starting with blue skies. We will keep a lot of cloud across Scotland, N. Ireland, northern England and north Wales through the morning – bringing some patchy mainly light rain, while any cloud across south Wales, The Midlands and eastern England will tend to break up to join southern counties of England to a sunny morning.

As we head through the afternoon, the patchy rain across northern areas should ease with the cloud breaking up to allow warm sunny spells to develop, though a few showers still, which may turn heavy towards eastern Scotland. Staying mainly dry with warm sunny spells for south Wales, Midlands, East Anglia and southern England.

So, feeling warmer for most compared to yesterday, temperatures across Scotland, N. Ireland and northern England reaching 17-20C, further south reaching 18-21C, perhaps 23C in London. High Pollen and UV levels across the south today too.

Wednesday

Warmer still on Wednesday, as low pressure deepening to the west of the British Isles and high pressure close to the east draws in increasingly warm and humid air from the south. Some decent spells of sunshine across much of England and Wales, lifting temperatures to around 21-24C generally, across SE England perhaps 26-27C. Clouding over across Scotland and N. Ireland, with showers arriving across the far northwest, so cooler here with temperatures reaching 15-17C.

Thursday

A warm and sultry night on Wednesday night across England and Wales – especially sticky toward the southeast, just an outside chance of an isolated storm drifting up from the south across the far SE of England and East Anglia eastern coastal areas later in the night into Thursday morning. Then on Thursday, warm sunshine again across much of central, southern and eastern England, however further north and west, as cold front moving east will introduce a band of cloud and patchy rain. Temperatures reaching a respectable 24C in London, 17C in Cardiff, Belfast and Glasgow.

Friday

Cold front clearing the east coast later on Thursday, little rain on it by the time it reaches eastern England. Fresher conditions following from the west, most southern areas dry and bright on Friday, with warm sunny spells, cooler and cloudier across the north – with some patchy mainly light rain.

Weekend

Into the weekend, it looks like the north-south split continuing – with Scotland, N. Ireland and northern England often cloudy and breezy with some patchy mainly light rain or drizzle. Wales, Midlands, southern England and East Anglia under high pressure with lighter winds and warm sunny spells.
