THE Glastonbury Weather Thread, back for 2017

More updates on the weather trends showing for Glastonbury 2017. Currently settled, not like the wet start to June, sunny spells but not that hot.

@ J10 I've signed up to this forum just to say that I and all my friends obsess over your Glasto weather reports every year, thanks so, so much for doing them! We've all been coming here every day since you posted the above hoping for report #1 to appear!

It's back! J10's Glastonbury weather thread in the Netweather Forum. No football clashes this year, so plenty of updates, insight and general excitement in the lead up to the 2017 festival. Mud-fest or sunburn?

Update 12th June 2017 - Still a fair way off but the current forecast shows High pressure area building away to SW of UK. This would bring settled, fair weather rather than heavy and persistent rain which has been plaguing the UK for the start of June.

With Somerset being on the right hand side of this high, cooler air will be drawn down from the north, so daytime temperatures look to be around 18C, still with strong sunshine, high UV values and the grass pollen season is really kicking off now.

So early indications show a settled, fair, mostly dry Glastonbury but not a scorcher. For latest updates in the forum

June 3rd 2017

Spring is over, and summer should be here and so approaches Glastonbury.
Wednesday 21st - Sunday 25th June are the dates to note, and the Glastonbury Weather thread has started up with J10 ( a member of the Site forecast team) posting his initial annual thoughts on the forum.

I spoke to Julian, the Mr J10 to ask him all about this special online thread.

Somehow the blogs have gathered a bit of cult following and a bit of a pre-Glastonbury tradition. I am by no means a traditional weather expert, but I do put a lot of effort into the blogs and I try to get them as accurate as possible, some years being better than others.

How did it all begin?
J10:     Around ten years when I was in the Netweather forecast team, Paul Michaelwaite suggested that we started to write a regular blog about Glastonbury, in addition to the short-term forecasts. So, my first forecast was in 2007, looking at the longer term trends May into June, and it sort of became a regular thing.

Do any particular years stand out?
J10:   I don't really remember the forecasts of years gone by, but I do recall 2013 with my forecasts making the Guardian Newspaper! Fame at last, or is that infamy.

In 2016 you didn't have as much input and were missed.

J10:   Last year was a dilemma with the Euro 2016 coinciding with the build up to Glastonbury, I was torn, but going to France for the tournament was a once in a lifetime experience, and I hope that regular Glastonbury weather followers can forgive me and will follow my forecasts this year. I'd like to promise wall to wall sunshine, but I only forecast the weather. I do wish I could control it. I will be following it on the TV this year.

How the forecast timetable develops

After the heat and humidity of May and warmth of this spring, June is starting off on a more mobile note with most of our weather blowing in from the Atlantic. That results in a more unsettled pattern, with showers particularly for western Britain and less chance of real heat for Somerset.

However, it is still 3 weeks to go and a brief ridge of high pressure could bring enough of a dry spell, glorious sunshine and heat. We'll watch over the next few weeks as the forecast develops. Monday 12th June is 10 days before, when you can begin to see more steady themes being highlighted in the forecast, then by Fri 16th, there should be enough of an idea for packing at the weekend.

Often you have to pack for all eventualities anyway, with two fine, warm days and then downpours even thunderstorms and a bit of a chill by night. That's the British summer. Anyway, share your wishes, dreams and #Glasto plans in the Forum.

Headlining this year are Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran. For the full line up, announced on May 30th including Status Quo on the Acoustic stage. Jonnie Hammond is happy (BBC Weather /Countryfile)
