Clearer and cooler everywhere to end the day

A drier and brighter picture for central areas after the wet Bank holiday. There is more rain heading in from N.Ireland to NW UK but more settled weather midweek if you are still on holiday.

After the miserable weather of yesterday particularly across the Midlands, today will be a little brighter but still with large amounts of cloud at times. It'll also become somewhat cooler and fresher from the West to give most folk from the Midlands northward a better nights sleep, although some eastern areas and the South will continue to feel humid.

There'll be a few showers 'dotted' about at first mainly in the West, with a front enhancing the showers across Northern Ireland this morning where some will be heavy before clearing away to give a finer afternoon with sunny spells and just the odd shower in the North. Scotland sees showers becoming more widespread from the West through the morning some of them heavy mostly across Highland and in the North, where a West wind will become quite fresh and blustery. The showers then largely become confined to the North and West through the afternoon, giving a finer end to the day in most parts.

England and Wales will see a few sunny intervals, but with quite large amounts of cloud at times. There'll be some patchy drizzle towards the South West and the odd shower elsewhere, before more widespread showers move into North West England and the North and West of Wales later in the morning. Other parts of the North will see some during the afternoon before clearer weather moves in from the West to give some sunshine to end the day. Across the East Midlands, East Anglia and the South any rain will be light and patchy, with many places staying dry, in still quite humid conditions.

A westerly wind will be introducing somewhat cooler air, but across East Anglia and the South East, it'll become very warm in any sunshine, with top temperatures here 21 to 23 locally perhaps 24C. Elsewhere an eventually fresher 16 to 19C is more likely, with the thermometer probably getting no higher than 13 or 14C across northern Scotland in the showers and blustery winds.

Southern and central parts have a rather cloudy evening with patchy, mostly light rain or drizzle, but this should clear from much of the Midlands overnight. Further South it'll probably remain cloudy, with misty conditions towards the South West and across the Channel Islands giving a little drizzle here and there. The Northern Isles will continue to see blustery showers for a while, but elsewhere, there'll be clearing skies, and with lighter breezes and rising pressure, it'll become dry. It'll also feel fresher in a cooler night than of late, with minimum temperatures 7 to 10C but a more humid 13 or 14C in the South.

Wednesday sees May ending on a dry quite pleasant note in most parts, as an anticyclone builds over England and Wales. There'll be good spells of sunshine, and with generally light winds it'll feel quite pleasant, but in the South and across South Wales, you'll keep more cloud with mist and patchy drizzle continuing to affect the far South West and the Channel Islands in still quite humid conditions. Elsewhere, it'll be fresher in a pleasantly warm afternoon, with top temperatures 18 to 22C. Apart from Northern Ireland where a freshening southerly wind and cloud could bring some rain towards morning, most parts continue dry into the evening and overnight with clear spells especially in central and eastern areas. Here light winds could allow a few short-lived mist patches to form in rural areas by morning, while the South and the South West, in particular, may remain rather cloudy and misty.

It's not expected to be a cold night though, with lowest temperatures mostly in the range 8 to 13C.

Although somewhat mixed, early June sees the weather becoming warmer once more, especially in the East and South. Here the mid-twenties Celsius are possible again but with the risk of showers towards the weekend, while the North and West tends to be more unsettled and breezier.
