Snow next week, it's January not a 'Snowbomb'

It's winter and it is going to get colder and there will be some snow. Not for everyone and not "for the entire UK" as claimed in the tabloids but a real change from the mild, blustery and soggy weather that has been winter so far.

It is turning colder for next week. These thickness charts show the change in air from Thursday this week and one week's time. Much colder air, sleet, hail and snow more likely.

The Netweather forum is all a buzz, some winter cold finally on the horizon after the super mild/Nov/Dec start to the winter. It's been dull, wet, often windy and just not like proper winter. My friend told me yesterday her snowdrops have been and gone in London and I think us humans are being to feel a bit out of sorts if we don't see our proper seasons. Cold, ice, frost and snow isn't everyone's cup of tea but we have to expect something in Jan/Feb.

The tabloids certainly have been promising us killer snow, worst winter ever since early November. They are back on the story this week, bored of never ending rain and flooding, this “snow for everyone” gig is taking hold

Looking back at some stories for this week and this winter , I was googling SNOW + Daily whoever. Found this gem from November, which is a great place to start and then had to add in a time constraint of “this Week” to see the more recent drama being promised throughout the whole of the UK. Extreme weather headlines sell newspapers, that's why they appear so often.

This week's offerings

The headline promising 2 feet of snow for all. Love this, 'forecasters' – whoever are they, often alongside 'experts'. The entire UK, really. Londoners know that their chances of seeing snow are far less than those in northern Scotland. Any hints from next week' charts don't show the whole of the UK covered in the white stuff,

Could be more like this...

Oh, I'm teasing, there will be parts of the UK that do get some decent snow. Tuesday onwards looks most likely with snow showers and bands of wet weather including snow. In northerly winds, northern Scotland always get most inland, but eastern and western coastal fringes of Britain and northern counties of N.Ireland.are also prone. Weather fronts that come in from the west will bang up against the cold air, so again the likelihood of significant snowfall, over Wales, the moors of SW, Pennines even a bit to low levels at times. There is hope..

How long will it last?

Well bearing in mind it hasn't started properly yet, even if it is icy and cold out there. The cold will last through next week, into the following weekend. Beyond that looks unlikely. So a decent chilly bit.

Uuuuuurgh, can people stop sharing the Express's latest crazy snow offering "Arctic Snowbomb", every Facebook share or Twitter retweet confirms the story is making an impact.

"Blistering Polar gales, several feet of snow and near-record low temperatures will grind the country to a standstill until MARCH, forecasters warn.
This is not the Met Office, it is their usual theatrical tinpot guy
...that a lethal set of freak weather conditions merging to unleash winter CHAOS.

They have borrowed a Netweather GFS thickness and surface pressure chart to show "The Arctic winds"
"Weather models show the ENTIRE COUNTRY blanketed in deep snow by the end of THIS MONTH with heavy falls as far south as London."

If anyone can find the model that is showing this PLEASE let me know. Our own Ed O'Toole got a mention.
I do ask who are these weathermen? "Weathermen fear a repeat of the worst winter in history which saw temperatures plunge to near -20C in January 1963 causing the sea to freeze off the Kent coast.

And maybe all of NR's weather pieces come from a template, fill in the gaps style, because the article from Jan 8th includes a bit from sensible Simon Keeling about Christmas and New Year. Should have edited that bit out Nate.
